Bondarenko triumphs at Al Habtoor

By Alaric Gomes, Staff Reporter

Dubai: Former junior Wimbledon champion Katerina Bondarenko brushed aside pretender Ekaterina Dzehalevich 6-1, 6-3 to win the 8th Al Habtoor Tennis Challenge at the Grand Habtoor Resort and Spa yesterday.
Bondarenko, who won the junior Wimbledon crown in 2004, was in a hurry from the start as she swept through the opening set 6-1 in under 20 minutes.
She stepped up her efforts in the second, and despite losing her serve once, the Ukrainian showed who was in charge as she served out for the match 6-3.
Sultan Al Habtoor, President of Al Habtoor Motors, Rahim Abu Omar, CEO of Habtoor Hospitality, and Farid Jayussi, tournament director, presented the trophies to the winners at the end.
This was the third visit for both the finalists, but it was Bondarenko who showed more purpose as she stayed focused through the final. "I just wanted to play my game and give her as little time as possible to get her rhythm," Bondarenko said.
Quick lead
"The key was to keep the games short and that pretty much worked today," she smiled.
The Ukrainian took hardly any time to power her way to a quick 4-0 lead with breaks in the second and fourth games. Dzehalevich broke her opponent to win her first point at 5-1, but Bondarenko showed no signs of relenting as she took the set 6-1.
The start of the second set was more evenly matched with Dzehalevich matching her 120th ranked rival. The Belarussian, in fact, had the upper hand in the middle of the set as she broke Bondarenko to lead for the first time at 3-2.
But the 20-year-old Ukrainian had other plans as she broke back on two successive occasions to serve out for the set and match. "Somehow my legs just gave way today," Dzehalevich lamented.
"Maybe I lost all my energy getting so far into this tournament that I did not have anything left in the tank," she shrugged.
"Reaching the final was a good achievement, but I should have matched this with a good show today."
Bondarenko was pleased with the way she has ended her season. "It is always good to take a break with a victory under the belt," she said.
"I will be in a better frame of mind when I start off the new season in Hobart and then at the Australian Open next month," Bondarenko added.
Meanwhile, Jelena Kostanic, the top seed in the singles, made up for her disappointment as she teamed up with Mervana Jugic-Salkic to defeat the Bondarenko sisters 6-3, 6-0 for the doubles crown.

Bondarenko sisters aiming high by Naomi Levin
Friday, 19 January, 2007

You'll be hearing game, set, match Bondarenko and Bondarenko a lot more if these two Ukrainian sisters have their way.
Alona, 22, and Kateryna Bondarenko, 20, have paired up for the first time at a Grand Slam and, despite losing in the second round, are looking to have a lengthy doubles career together.
After beating Lucie Safarova and Tamarine Tanasugarn 6-4 6-3 in the first round, the Bondarenkos battled hard in the sticky Melbourne heat, but came up short against tournament seventh-seeds Anna-Lena Groenefeld and Meghann Shaughnessy.
The pairs traded breaks in the first set with neither team able to get a clear advantage. The opener went to a tiebreaker, which the Bondarenkos won, but the heat, and their opponent's superior experience, was too much - Groenefeld and Shaughnessy taking the match 6(5)-7 6-3 6-3.
Alona said that having her sister around was a real help because they provide each other with plenty of motivation and encouragement.
"I think sisters playing doubles together is better," Alona said despite the loss.
"I know today I was playing worse than her, but she supported me. (During the match) I say, 'sorry' and she says, 'it's ok, never mind. Tomorrow or next time you will be better'."
"With sisters, it's easier."
The sisters are coached by their mother Natalia, but she runs her own tennis academy and is not able to travel with her daughters. On the tour, coaching tends to be left up to Alona, as the older and higher-ranked sister.
"Sometimes she is a bad coach," Kateryna joked.
The two admit that they do fight from time to time, but it is just a bit of sibling rivalry.
"Almost every time we play, we fight, but then, after a few points, we are ok with each other," Kateryna said laughing.link (http://www.australianopen.com/en_AU/news/articles/2007-01-19/200701191169203009828.html)

livescore.com is frozen at Katya 3-6 5-3
Eurosport.com is frozen at Katya 3-6 5-3
Yahoo said the score was Katya 3-6 3-4 and then 3-6 3-6
Someone said Serbian Eurosport said it was Katya 3-6 6-5 with Jankovic serving.
Someone called the tournament and was told that Katya won the 2nd set 6-3, then they called back and was told Jankovic won 6-3 6-3, then they called again and was told Jankovic won 6-3 6-3
However, someone just said that the odds on the match are changing, which means that it could still be going

She is quite happy with reaching semis (with one leg, she says) and she will try her best tomorrow, but the whole statement doesn't sound too optimistic.link (http://www.wtaworld.com/showpost.php?p=10188852&postcount=567)

Perhaps, if Kateryna had a more relaxed attitude on court she could win more matches

I'd like to hear her other fan's opinion on this, cos she's already very good. If she could win a tournament, then she would climb up the rankings to rival her sister.
It could be a fun competition

edit: i've come to the conclusion than being more relaxed on court would be probably better for kateryna than for alona

i started reading quite early, my first passions were paleonthology, then mythology, then fantasy/sci-fi.
i wanted to learn as much as possible until my mid teens, when all that became less interesting. i already liked the fantasy genre in the 80's and that's why i don't feel much towards nowadays fantasy trend (h.p. and the like)

Player portrait: The Bondarenko sisters

Thursday, May 31, 2007
By Benjamin Adler

Alona and Katerina Bondarenko are sisters doin’ it for themselves on the WTA tour. They may have made a premature exit from the singles, but the inseparable pair are aiming for glory in the women’s doubles here at the French Open. We met the Bondarenko girls to find out where that sisterly synergy comes from….
22 year-old Alona Bondarenko and her sibling Katarina, 20, have a habit of doing things in twos. On Wednesday, out on court 15, they successively beat Czech opponents by the same score; 6-0, 6-1. On Thursday, the Ukrainian sisters proceeded to say goodbye to this year’s singles tournament at the same time; Katerina to Patty Schnyder, and 22 seeded Alona to Italian qualifier Karin Knapp.
Elder sister Alona might have been expected to be feeling miserable about her surprise loss, but nothing of the sort: “Sure we’re disappointed, but it’s just the sort of situation when it really helps to have my sister around,” she explains. “In fact, I’m more her mother than a sister,” she jests, before adding with a laugh, “Only joking!”
“Alona takes me higher”
Katerina climbed into the top 50 (47th) after Rome, and now travels the circuit without her mother. She has no permanent coach either, but with Alona by her side, she knows she has all the support she needs. “We play in the same tournaments and we watch out for each other. We like being together, it’s more fun. It’s comforting too, and helps us play better,” she insists.
Having an elder sister who is slightly more successful is clearly a source of inspiration for the younger Bondarenko.
“Alona has always been better than me, so my aim is to get up to her level. She takes me higher,” says the Wimbledon junior champion from 2004. Coached by their parents, with the help of elder sister Valeria, the pair have different playing styles. Unlike Alona, Katerina adopts an aggressive approach, something she attributes to “our different personalities.”
Family affair
"I began playing when I was 5, and I remember Katerina watching from the courtside. She started very early too and around the age of 8 she decided to take her tennis seriously,” says Alona, who was accompanied by Valeria in her early years on the tour while mum Natalia was watching over Katerina’s progress.
Alona has moved to Karkhov, far from hometown Kiev where Katerina is still based with her parents, who run a tennis school in the suburbs of the Ukrainian capital. Alona explains the move by the need to be near quality hardcourts. The sisters are only home two months a year anyway; such are the demands of the tour.
Lofty ambitions
The Bondarenkos occupy their time on the circuit with reading, music (Russian pop being their favourite) and shopping – together of course. And when it comes to setting targets for the future Alona and Katerina do not hesitate for a moment. “I’m aiming for he top 20 by the end of the year,” reveals Alona. Katerina smiles, before saying the top 30 would be a good target for her in the near future.
And have the duo considered what they might do after they finish their career? "Start a family," they reply in chorus. Family first then; hardly a surprise coming from such united siblings.

Bondarenkos go back to school

Tennis stars Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko (UKR) dropped into Lordswood School in Birmingham today during a break from their preparations ahead of this week’s DFS Classic.
The Ukrainian sisters entertained 60 pupils aged 11 and above with tales of their lives on tour, their introduction to tennis, their training regime and their hopes for the rest of their careers before mixing in with the pupils for a game of tennis.
Alona, a 22-year-old currently ranked 25th in the world, is seeded six at the DFS Classic.
She has had a great season so far, reaching the final of an event in Warsaw, beating world No.5 Svetlana Kuznetsova in the semi-final. She begins her campaign against Jamea Jackson or Yung-Jan Chan.
Kateryna Bondarenko is the younger of the two siblings and played her first match against Yaroslava Shevdova from Russia on Monday, losing in three close sets 6-4, 4-6, 3-6.

Lordswood Boys Specialist Sports College has recently been awarded funding from the LTA and Sport England to develop five tennis courts, three with floodlights.
The school is involved in a cross curricula tennis project to promote the new courts to the community. Groups will be visiting the DFS Classic later in the week.
Ron Skelton, Deputy Head Teacher of Lordswood Boys Specialist Sports College, said: “The boys were really excited to meet Alona and Kateryna.
“I think the boys learnt a huge amount about what it takes to become a top athlete and I am sure this visit will inspire them to pick up a racket and have a go themselves.
“Once our courts have been built I have no doubt that they will be full of aspiring Wimbledon champions.”

Great effort, it's a shame she couldn't take it to a 3rd set. :(
She'll need to learn how to play the big points better. She's still a bit fragile mentally, but she should improve with more experience.

Gold Coast
July 15, 2007 - 4:52PM

Already plotting revenge against Ukrainian tennis stars Alona and Kateryna Bondarenko, veteran Nicole Pratt claims the sisters are mentally fragile.

World No.22 Alona Bondarenko sealed a 3-0 victory over Australia today in the Fed Cup tie on the Gold Coast with a 7-5 6-4 triumph over a never-say-die Pratt.

Kateryna Bondarenko shocked the home side with a display of flawless tennis to smash Pratt 6-0 6-1 in the second of yesterday's singles matches.

Pratt felt the Bondarenkos gained enormous benefit from being able to seek on-court advice and reassurance from captain Volodymyr Bogdanov when under pressure this weekend.

Unlike the professional women's tour, Fed Cup captains are allowed to coach their players during match intervals.

"Where I see their biggest weakness is mentally," world No.46 Pratt said about the sisters.

"That's where the Fed Cup is unique because they have a coach on the court to settle them down.

"If I play either of those sisters at any stage during the rest of the year, I think I'm going to beat them for the pure reason that mentally they don't have the assistance that they've had during Fed Cup.

"I'm going to take the positives from this week and hopefully have a little bit of revenge in the future."

Australia has been relegated to the Asia-Oceania zonal group competition for 2008 following the loss to Ukraine.

Pratt reckons Australia has the team to not only qualify for World Group I but clinch her country's first Fed Cup since victory over Spain in 1993.

"I really truly believe we could have got back to Group I and if we did, we would've had as much chance as anyone else to win the Fed Cup," Pratt said.

"It's strange that I'm saying that because now we're in qualifying."

Gold Coast girl Samantha Stosur missed this weekend's crunch tie due to a virus, robbing the team of the No.1 player.

In Stosur's absence world No.101 Casey Dellacqua stepped up and won her dead rubber 6-4 6-2 against Yuliana Fedak.

It's an encouraging sign for Australian women's tennis, with Fed Cup captain David Taylor predicting the 22-year-old West Australian to climb further up the world rankings this year.

"I don't think she's really maxing out at all," Taylor said.

"By the time the Australian summer comes around, Casey will be a direct acceptance (into the Australian Open) for sure.

"I think (a world ranking of) 70s or 80s is a reasonable goal."

I liked this part: Kateryna Bondarenko shocked the home side with a display of flawless tennis to smash Pratt 6-0 6-1 in the second of yesterday's singles matches.

Congrats to Katya on her two big wins in singles in doubles! Way to go! :clap2:

Pratt sure has a strange sense of humor, talking about her opponent's mental weakness after being crushed 6-0 6-1 in front of her home crowd. What a sore loser! :smash:
