Hingis in three sets.

This is what I live for in tennis - two players who play a decent schedule, and who are consistently in the semifinals and finals of tournaments, and are consistently facing off. It isn't even the claycourt season and Hingis and Sharapova are playing for their third time this year.

I See Martina winning, especially if she brings a big bag of variety with her.

Well you know me, i always support the underdog! Why should it be different here?

Onto the bigger picture ... well Martina is winning currently by a decent majority. But it makes sense. If Martina can come out like she did against Lindsay, keep those errors to a minimum, and stay focused - this should be her match.

Martina will be Maria's first big rival of the tournament.. it'll be a HUGE leap!

I have faith in Martina, and hope she doesn't beat herself out there. These are my words, so they must come to pass.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat? Absolute nonsense.

One dimensional player, with sorry excuses so volleys, drop shots, lobs, slice or any other shots that can lead to a player being called varied or an all ourt player - figures out Martina, who can play all the moves and then some....

If Martina can maintain focus, and keep it varied.... we may even have bagels on the menu.

Very very hard to predict. Sorry folks, but I honestly don't know what to expect. The only thing, I've got a feeling Maria will be on her guard and won't take a two-set beating à la Tokyo if she is to lose this one. Plus last year's beatdown must still be stinging so... OLD SCHOOL STAND UP! :D Hingis is going to win this one. Maria has lost many big matches since her Wimbledon title in '04, and this will be another notch on that list. Martina has been here; she knows how to handle the pressure - which there is none for her to handle. It's all on Maria, and she has crumbled over and over in the last year and a half. Maria's got a lot to prove IMO, and Hingis will exploit this. Martina in three sets - 6/3, 4/6, 6/3.

i think maria will win in straight sets and am actually quite surprised how many people think hingis can win, cause the first time they met it was obvious maria was feeling the pressure didnt play well didnt have a plan(compared to dubai) and was also a little bit awed surprised by martina, but i expect maria to win this, because if maria goes out on the court and plays her game well theres no doubt in my mind shell win, but then again theres the off chance she could have a bad day(doubt it as shes been playing well) and to whoever said maria will struggle mentally you obviously didnt see the last match, and also maria has nothing to prove to anyone, and to serena fan who says this i think its serena who needs to prove to everyone that shes capable of beating a top 50 player(sorry to other ws fans but this one deserves it!). maria to win 6-4 7-5 for me.

I know you are a long time Maria hater, so your post is not surprising. But what exactly does Maria need to "prove" at the age of 18? She's #5 in the world (next week #4), has been in the top 5 for over a year, has reached the quarters or better of the last 20 tournaments she has entered, has won Wimbledon, the YEC, been WTA Player of the Year, and has reached the semis or quarters of every slam since FO 2004.

Of course Martina has more experience, she's 25 years old. Maria has a lot of time to get better and add to her accomplishments.

If Marti can get her first serves in then i think she will win in 2...

i agree and with less unforced errors she will have a big chance on their match ;)

Hingis was exhausted from excessive physical training when Sharapova won their last match. A rested Hingis should win rather easily. Sharapova is a robot, and you need a little bit more to beat Hingis.

god im quite surprised how many people here are picking hingis here but i suppose there are more hingis fans and maria haters. anyhow i think maria will win in straight sets, i really dont know what all the hype about her is all she does is get the ball back with heavy topspin, that worked in tokyo when maria tryed to overpower her and made too many unforced errors and i also think she was feeling the pressure, but then in dubai she got her act together and form and beat hingis in straight sets, this match is in the balance but its all up to maria, and the way shes been playing, and what happened last year(dont really think will be a factor) i predict maria to go out there play her game and win in style. although that does not mean im over confident, but like i said it all depends on masha but i have faith.
and remember...
lets go masha!!!
LETS GO!!!

I think pressure may come into it... Maria is expected to win (well... sort-of) so the pressure is on her while Martina has already exceeded most people's expectations for this tournament when she beat Davenport.

Oh dear...

I love it when people say, "it's all up to..." Hi, there are two people playing on the court, so actually it's not all up to one of them which is why it is a match as opposed to a practice session with a ball machine  .

I think this match could go either way and I really hope both players are more or less on...Maria with more patience, Martina with a better serve than she has shown in the last two matches...I think part of the hype is that this is looking like the new best rivalry in Women's tennis...but I think ultimately Hingis has the advantage here...variety, anticipation, a plan of action (a few :) ), plus she has won this tournament and been in 2 finals. I think she has more confidence at the moment considering how tough her draw has been, P

Its a tough one to call since both had beat each other once.

But i go with Masha since she really determined to be a champ after so many dissappointing losses she had during 05 and early of 06.

Eventho, masha has lack of variety on her shots, its her mental strength that carried her into the top level of tennis.

If u watched their 2 previous match in tokyo and dubai, u can see 2 different hingis. In tokyo, hingis played very confident, her body language show it and she looked determined to play masha. Everything work with her game, she make masha struggle and beat her.

In dubai, things are different, i think martina didnt show her focus and confident on that match, she was too passive from the beginning of the match. She also didnt move very well (probably still tired due to overtrained as she admitted after beating mirza in the 1st round), On that match i can see martina can do much better if she just want to step her game higher.

Masha was just doing her normal thing on that match, hitting the ball hard enough to kept hingis defensive.

i agree, i watched the match and hingis look tired, not determined as she had shown in tokyo.

But all the credits went to masha coz she play better and mentally stronger than hingis. :)

IMO it's all a matter of Martina's anticipation. If it works, Maria won't have a chance.

I think that for Hingis to win she needs to be pumped like she was against Lindsay. After beating Maria in Tokyo her concentration faltered in their Dubai match, which is only natural. Not to mention that Maria played better, and Hingis was tired.

So, Martina needs to run like she did against Lindsay, and SERVE WELL. Good luck to both, but especially to Marti. :p :D

i think youll all be sorry maria will win the match tonight and then what will your exscuses be she was tired after beating lindsay? when maria plays 100% she will always beat hingis, thats a fact im sorry you all have to face and you might just have to face that fact tonight, if maria is on top of her game, although the slower surface might be an issue i still think maria will win.

msharafan you are a fucking moron please use sentences please? we have not see hingis and sharapova play when they were at 100% so your statement is bullshit so kindly shut the fuck up, loser, and hingis has 5 slams to maria's 1 so hingis is better so shove it, the slower surface will help maria because she runs as fast as a sumo wrestler with shackles, so i think she will lose.

On a more serious note: Fuck off.

yeah we can, and obviously you can too ryan and this is what worries you well no need to take it out on me! and im not a moron, and you shove it cause martina is not better than sharapova they are from two different generations! if maria was playing when martina won those slams maria would have won them all! has martina won a slam this century? i dont think so she has adjusted well, but when maria plays 100% higis doesnt stand a chance. hingis cant play at the level maria plays at so at tokyo she brough maria down to her level which in turn confused maria, but maria figured out how to beat her, and she will again tinight. and the winner of this match tonight well call the better player well just have to wait and see but im pretty confident!

I'd actually prefer some more votes for Maria... this board is awful as a whole when it comes to predicting! [A la Lindsay and Amelie's losses].

Do that few people believe in the "golden girl". Well.. perhaps disillusionment is almost complete :p

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat? Absolute nonsense.

If Martina can maintain focus, and keep it varied.... we may even have bagels on the menu.

One dimensional player, with sorry excuses so volleys, drop shots, lobs, slice or any other shots that can lead to a player being called varied or an all ourt player - figures out Martina, who can play all the moves and then some....
