THE PLACE
Sheffield is a city (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_status_in_the_United_Kingdom) and metropolitan borough (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolitan_borough) in the north of England (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England). It is so named because of its origins in a field on the River Sheaf (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River_Sheaf) that runs through the town. The city has grown from its industrial roots to encompass a wide economic base. The population of the City of Sheffield is estimated at 516,100 people (2004),[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield#_note-0) and it is one of the eight largest English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England#Geography) cities outside London (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/London) that form the English Core Cities Group (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_Core_Cities_Group).
The city has become world famous for its production of steel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel). Many innovations in the industry have been developed locally, including crucible (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crucible_steel) and stainless steel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stainless_steel). This fuelled an almost tenfold increase in the population since the start of Industrial Revolution (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Revolution). It gained its city charter in 1893 and became officially titled the City of Sheffield. International competition caused a decline in local industry during the 1970s and 1980s, affecting Sheffield's population. In recent years the city has attempted to reinvent itself as a sporting and technology city; there are signs that this is reversing its fortunes.

The present city boundaries were set in 1974, when the former county borough (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_borough) of Sheffield merged with Stocksbridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stocksbridge)Urban District (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_District) and two parishes from the Wortley Rural District (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wortley_Rural_District). This area includes a significant part of the countryside surrounding the main urban region. Roughly a third of Sheffield lies in the Peak District National Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_District_National_Park) (no other English city has a national park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_park) within its boundary), and Sheffield is officially Europe's greenest city, having won the 2005 Entente Florale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Entente_Florale) competition. This was helped by the fact that Sheffield contains over 150 woodland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Woodland) spaces and 50 public parks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park).[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheffield#_note-SCCFACTS). Sheffield also has a booming music scene, with bands such as The Arctic Monkeys (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Arctic_Monkeys) paving the artistic boundaries of the city.
