The Pacific Life Open gets off to an early start with a prequalifying tournament featuring two of the top high school players in the Coachella Valley.
Pam Montez, a freshman at La Quinta High School, will take on Coco Vandeweghe at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden at 3 p.m., today.
Montez is the top-ranked player in Mexico in the 14 age group.
Vandeweghe, who trains in the desert with Harry Fritz, is the granddaughter of former New York Knick Ernie Vandeweghe and niece of former UCLA star and Denver Nuggets general manager Kiki Vandeweghe.
The winner will take on Palm Desert's Brittany Blalock at 1 p.m., Saturday. Blalock is the three-time Desert Valley League singles champion who has signed to play at Cal Poly-San Luis Obispo next season.
The winner of that match will earn a wildcard into the Pacific Life Open women's qualifying, which begins Monday. Players need to win two matches in qualifying to reach the main draw, which begins Wednesday.
