:D So impressed! I expected Svetlana to win, especially after her great week last week. She may not be top 10 right now, but she's definately playing better this year. Hingis played a good match judging by the stats, but not excellent. I hope someone who watched the match will be able to supply details. ;) Hingis' serve percentage was great, but too many df's and an ok 2nd serve winning percentage.

Good luck against Mauresmo, should be a great match! :D

Nothing personal against Russians, but Martina has now beaten all three of the Russians who won slams while she was away. Now, she just has to figure out a way to get past Dementieva.

Anyway, sets up a semi against Amelie, which should be interesting to say the least.

But I think Hingis has proven beyond any doubt now that she can cope with the power players.

Incidentally, she was obviously going for more on her serve today. She hit three aces and made four double faults, something she doesn't usually do, so she is packing more serving heat.

Smart and consistent beats powerful, smart and inconsistent and powerful. The Hingis serve kept her in that long enough for Sveta to wear out and Martina to work out her game and start making Sveta miss.Cat playingwith tired mouse by the end.

is no-one going to mention that sveta was injured in the 2nd set?

kuzy should have won the first set she was in control throughout, in the 2nd set her thigh was slearly bothering her. when sveta injures her leg her game falls apart-she's a very physical player, her thighs are her power base and obviously crucial for her great movement

hingis played pretty bad-she made way too many unforced errors although she did serve well at crucial times

I think Martina didn't play a good match. She was too defensive and kinda waited for Kuznetsova's ue's. I think she started to play better at the end of the first set and the second set was a piece of cake with Kuznetsova not moving well and making too much ue. Martina has to play more agressive 2morrow against Momo. And then i think she will win in 2

I'm a big Martina fan, however i must admit that it wasn't the best match of Martina. She had more luck than the ability to win it.She was patient, waited for UE of Sveta, and that was worth it. IMHO she should go more often to the net,but from the other hand Sveta played witch such power that it was quite impossible.
If Sveta won that tie-break Martina would probably give it up.
3 quality aces-I'm impressed, but also too many UE from her.

I couldnt stand watching Sveta with that her ugly figure. That legs, calfs and so much of sweat.Once fy daddy, who watched the match too said that in a while some flies were gonna stick all over her LOL.That wierd way of walking,it looked like she was gonna tangle or stumble and fell.

But i must give her my respect, she played well, lot of winners,UE too.She looked kinda exhausted at the end of the match.

Afterall,i'm glad Martina won and looking forward to watch her playing against Mauresmo.Martine needs to figure out sth to beat her!!!

If you can beat a top 15 player and one who has won a slam singles title and you can do it in straight sets, you aren't playing too shabby a game right now. That's three straight set victories in a row for Martina and nobody has won more than two games against her in the second set. So she is winning going away.

Martina will play Mauresmo differently then she would have played Kuznetsova. That's the beauty of Hingis. She comes up with game plans to suit the occasion. That's because she takes the time to study her opponents and figure out what works and doesn't work against them.

Last summer during Word team tennis, she faced a girl she had never played before. So she went to the TV people and got them to run a tape for her of the girl's last match, so she could scout her out.

And that was in World Team Tennis! That's what makes Martina the consumate professional. She respects every opponent.

Good for Momo. I like to see profesionalism. What I hate is arrogance from players who lose to somebody and say afterwards "I never heard of her before."

Know what? Then you deserved to lose. You showed no respect for your opponent or for the fans who paid money to watch you play.

"It was a pretty impressive win,"

"The first set was a bit tough. I guess that was because we haven't played before."

"She is a powerful girl,"

"She is deeper in the forehand. I tried not to give her too many opportunities and gave her balls on her backhand. I was successful with my strategy."

Can we say that Martina is an elite-level test for Momo as well?

It is just sad that as soon as Martina defeats a player that should be elite or in form, the player is all of a sudden marked as trash hence why Martina won.

Undoubtedly, a big test for Amelie. After all, Martina has just taken out the player who beat Amelie last week. There's certainly no disgrace in losing to Martina! :worship:

As for today Martina played an intelligent match as always. It was a close first set and a few people have said that Kuznetsova was the better player? IMO it was very equal with excellent serving getting both players out of trouble on their serves. It was actually Martina who had break points in 2 of Kuznetsova's service games while facing no break points herself.

All credit to Kuznetsova for digging in and not giving up in the second set where other players would have. She was strugging with her thigh, looked tired and was being pretty well outplayed but still stuck it out to the end. :worship:

"should have" "Should of" makes no sense in English. That's the way a lot of people pronounce "should have" in America, but gramatically, it is nonsense.

Well actually i am sorta glad about the fight Mirza put up to Hingis...Hingis just seems really good now beating almost everyone...Mirza seemed to have done a better job than many of them..Esp most of hingis matches are like tough 1st set and easy 2nd..But mirza didnt fold in 2nd..She did show grit..

Oops! Sorry. Didn't see this thread and bumped the other one.

Here's what I posted there:

An excellent match, consistently played at very high level of speed and intensity.

While I was watching the match, someone walked into the room, saw Kuznetsova on teevee, asked "Who's that monster?" and left before I could answer.

My answer would have been That "monster" is called Svetlana Kuznetsova and is a damn fine tennis player..

I was under the impression that Kuznetsova didn't move that well, and that her footwork was awkward. Based on this match, not really. She doesn't look very fast, but her movement is more than enough for her style of play, because she's so powerful that she quickly takes control of points and it's her opponent who gets to do much of the running around. She blasts supersonic forehand winners from anywhere on the court, like Lena, and can on occasion do the same with her backhand. She has the volleys and smashes when they are needed. The serve is good, and only Hingis being such a good returner prevented it from doing more damage.

So what's the problem with her, then? An inconsistent backhand, which hits a fair share of winners but many more UEs; but above all Kuznetsova is too rash, too impatient and goes for winners when other players would play a couple of additional shots before taking the opportunity. She plays a terrifyingly high-risk game that is a delight to watch, but isn't as effective as Kuznetsova's breathtaking winners would suggest. For each one of those, there is at least one needless UE, and against a player as consistent as Hingis, that is simply fatal.

Hingis was astonishingly consistent, ran like the devil to return countless shots, and handled Kuznetsova's awesome power much better than she did against Lena at Tokyo. Even when under terrible pressure from Kuznetsova's mighty shots, she had the sense to avoid playing into Kuznetsova's forehand, and to retaliate by putting pressure on her much less consistent backhand. And her movement and court sense, the way she anticipates her opponent's shots, are a thing of wonder. A superb performance from Hingis, despite the fact that she hit very few winners. The serve is still something of a liability, though.

"should have" "Should of" makes no sense in English. That's the way a lot of people pronounce "should have" in America, but gramatically, it is nonsense.

The reason people pronounce it that way is becuase it can be contacted into should've

There was this one point in the tiebreak, unbelievable!! Never seen Martina dictate like that!! It started off with Kuzzi really being the aggressor but then Martina hit a shot really deep, got a weak reply from Kuzzi, out of nowhere Martina began penetrating her BH all over the place, hard and flat, then finally Kuzzi could not handle that last shot and tossed it high up, Martina waited for the ball to bounce and smashed a half-overhead winner from the baseline to the delight of the crowd!!!!! wow!!!!!

I'm surprised with the reception Hingis got from the normally reserved Doha crowd! They were cheering when Kuzzi made errors! lol

I continued to be totally amazed at hingis.

although maybe I shouldn't be.. in some ways this is EXACTLY what she had the potential to do all this time she has been sitting out of the game.

on the other hand.. its still so amazing how well she has been doing. And i'm glad she is giving some of these girls a beat down.
