Acapulco 2rd:What happened to Anna, she was UP 4/1 and 4/2 in final set but retired to heat??
having such a big lead and so close to the win,why would she retire just because of heat?? Also did she have any match pts in 2nd set??

I dont know... all I know is that Smashnaova seems to make a habit of making a match tighter than she should and eventually end up cramping ... Sad...

Heat illness is not because she couldn't stand the sun/weather. Anna was suffering and probably couldn't walk straight because of the heat. Something like what Michaella Krajicek had when she retired against Amelie Mauresmo.

Anna

Poor Anna. I saw her cramp once in Auckland too - it wasn't pretty.

Bullshyt. Anna retired at around almost close to 10 pm last nite if not later. What heat illness. It was in the low 70s.
If she cant play in a temperature that really isnt too bad what is she gonna do for the rest of the year. :tape:

I may be wrong, but I don't think Smashnova would have retired if she was in that Grand Slam finale. :tape: :tape: :tape: But I don't want to turn this into another Juju-bashing thread.

Anyway pretty weird to retire at 4-2 in the third with a HEAT illness, but oh well, well done Ani! :wavey:

It's a bit like the score in the 2R of Moscow last year: M. Sharapova def. A. Groenefeld 1-6 1-4 ret. I felt sooo bad for ALG then, even though I wanted Maria to win.

On the men's side, Nikolay Davydenko once retired up 6-1 1-0

i remember that match. i was so pissed :fiery:
it was like a free ticket from Smashnova since Lena D had a little slump at that time.

It was probably humid?

I didn't check what time she played, plus the WTA wrote it as heat illness.

that's really awful for her. unfortunately, she's like that wta's oli rochus. the're ultimate weapon is their speed and supreme ability to chasedown every ball, and when the wheels lose their power, their entire game does too.

Anna definely has a cramping history. If anyone saw her match against Elena D at the French you would have see she couldn't have carried on. She had body cramps, started in her leg, and went up her back and arms it was not a pleasant experience to watch
