I had heard about Vinci, seen a short video, and for the past few months couldn't wait to see her play. She didn't disappoint.

With her short and stocky build, Vinci looks more like a footballer than a tennis player (she also has a pretty big rack, BTW). Most players with her body type develop into that annoying retriever/counterpuncher type, lacking power but specializing in speed and consistency. But some sublime miracle happened along the way and Vinci decided to compensate for her lack of power off the baseline by becoming a net charger and volleyer.

Her serve is decent for a player of her size, though hardly a decisive weapon. Her one-handed slice backhand and her volleys, though, are a wonder to behold. And they had to be, considering most of her shots off the baseline are sliced (!). The way she takes risks and charges the net to cut the points short before she can be overpowered, the sheer beauty of the winners she hits when things go well, the insane bravery of charging the net on decisive points (and sometimes pulling it off!)... It's simply divine. For a few moments I thought Novotna was back.

I know S&V take longer to develop than baseline bashers, but I still doubt she'll ever become a top player. She may become somewhat faster and fitter, but will always be "inconsistent" because S&V is a high-risk style (that's why it's so great), and to be in the top 20 or even top 30 you have to either carry artillery Vinci simply doesn't have, or to mix power and consistency to a degree.

This match in particular - there was never any doubt as to the outcome; Vinci lacks the weaponry to break the serve of a top player like Mauresmo, who on top of that was serving as well as she was in late 2005 (Philadelphia and YEC) - and Vinci doesn't seem to be a particularly good returner.

Mauresmo was superb; not only rock-solid in consistency and lighting-like on speed and footwork, but able to use a variety of shots to counter Vinci's relentlessly offensive game, rush the net when needed and hit many more winners that I saw her hit at the AO. Mauresmo exudes confidence (and unbelievable fitness) right now; the most extraordinary thing about her is that she makes her athletic game seem positively effortless. Vinci pretty much handed the second set to Mauresmo by taking unnecessary risks on the first game; I dig it when you charge the net, Vinci, but don't overdo it! Mauresmo could then relax, take risks of her own and unleash her best game, not that tight defensive game, waiting for the opponent's error, that she played say at the AO final.

Nice summary on Vinci :)
I saw her first two matches at the Oz open and it's great to see her doing well because she plays differently as you described. I hope she can get her ranking up so she can make it further into grand slams and appear more on TV etc
I hope she gets a lucky draw for Wimbeldon - I remember she pushed Clijsters a bit last year. The seedings commitee should give her a seeding for Wimby :D

TV: it's kind of depressing that we'll only get to see Vinci a handful of times each year, most of the time when she's losing to top players. You should have seen me yesterday (all that purple prose that I lavished on Vinci is actually pretty restrained): I was doing fist pumps and shouting "Yeah!" everytime she hit a winner, shouting "Go for it!" when she charged the net. I was simply out of my mind.

Seeding: the AO had 32 seeded players; is Wimbledon the same? If so, Vinci wouldn't need to climb that many places on the ranking to be seeded anyway. It's difficult, but not impossible. Problem is, the dreary claycourt season and it's godawful "match winner with less than 5 winners to her credit" routine is approaching.
