 The Russian dream team - 4 players in the top 15 in the world - good thing Sharapova is not on the team because she would be a big liability on clay

Belgium will need Kim and Justine to be able to be competitive

Sharapova is poor opponent on Clay but she's always say that she's Russian but she doesn't want to play the fed cup.......I understand nothing!!

So Sharapova won't play the fed cup ??

I super highly doubt Maria would want her Fedcup debut to be on clay. Too many things at stake especially if they are up against a Justine-led Belgium team.

This team is the best team Russia has to offer if the surface is clay.

The answers are already in your post. If this was on any surface other than clay, Maria would most likely be leading the team. However, it is on clay and we all know it is her worst surface. The priority for Russia is to come up with a team with the best chances of winning. There are simply a number of Russian players who are more experienced and confident on clay than Maria. And like I said, I would be surprised if Maria even gave a thought to playing this first tie given its circumstances.

http://sport.gazeta.ru/i2/lg.gif

basically the same stuff he usually says when she doesn't play: she needs to gain her form. Also, this time he added that clay is not her favourite surface, but the published 5 girls are pleminiary since he still has 1.5 month and could change it. He hopes that Maria will help Russia in next rounds.

It looks a good team. Perhaps the strongest the Russian team has ever had. Will be a good tie if at least one of the Belgians play.

I guess Maria doesn't realize that if she doesn't play Fed Cup within the next few years, she won't be on the Olympic team in 2008.

Masha couldn't be more in form.

Also, this time he added that clay is not her favourite surface

Now this is undeniable. As other people have stated, Petrova is a better bet for clay.

wrong there

all she has to do is make herself Available to play Fed Cup, by doing that she is also eligible to play Olympics.

Hasn't Kim been saying for a while that she doesn't want to play on clay?

Yes but Kim said two matches on clay won't make much difference, so if she is fit she will play. She loves playing at home. One of her goals is to play and win for Belgium. That was in the last interviews she gave when she withdrew from Indian Wells.

~|Naomi|~
Mar 3rd, 2006, 07:13 AM
And just adding, Kim said although she doesn't particularly like clay it is a good choice for the time of the season and because with Henin it makes the team stronger.

Last year Tarpischev went to Miami to talk to the players, and didn't announce the team until April 10th.

So this is a very early announcement this year.

I think Lena and Sveta should play the singles matches.
but we`ll see throughout the clay-court season who would be the best to play according to their results.
The team is very strong.Russians have an advantage in the doubles.
I`m really looking forward to the Fed-cup matches..unfortunately no TV coverage

Wow! very good choice :worship:
They can play well on clay. ;)
Myskina - 2004 FO champion
Dementieva - 2004 FO finalist
Petrova - Former FO junior champ
Kuznetsova -

Anyway, i'm not surprised that Masha is not in the team. Everyone knows why.
Maybe next round she will:shrug:

cant all 4 of them play one singles match each?
that will make kim and justine tough for strategy..
and the russians only need to win 2 singles matches..
the doubles shud be theirs..(i think)
the belgians will surely be concertrating on singles

I believe both Justine and Kim will play as they said they would, so this is probably the best team for Russia being clay the surface (and it will). I'd choose Dementieva and Kuznetsova to play the singles. While Petrova is the top-ranked russian on this team and she certainly is good on clay, she always seem to come up short of answers to the Belgians. Well, Kuznetsova too - but at least she beat Kim on clay last year and gave Justine her toughest matches on it.

Interesting team, Shamil certainly isn't underestimating Belgium or taking any risks. A good strategy IMO.

I would play Elena D and Sveta for singles. Sveta is hit or miss, however her game on clay is fantastic and with team support, mentally she may hold up.

Elena D has powerful, solid groundstrokes and is usually very consistent with them. That will be a factor. She has beaten Justine on clay, can take on Kim, but needs to learn how to defeat her consistently.

Nastya and Petrova as a back up is a dream. They can challenege and may even sneak a win.

Mouthwatering tie.
