THE PLACE
Haifa (Hebrew (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hebrew_language) חֵיפָה Ḥefa; Arabic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_language) حَيْفَا Ḥayfā (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/f/fa/ArHaifa.ogg) (help (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Media_help)·info (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:ArHaifa.ogg))) is the third-largest city in Israel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Israel), with a population of about 267,800 (as of September 2005). Areas and towns around it are deemed to be in the Haifa District (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haifa_District), of which it is also a part. It is a seaport, located below and on Mount Carmel (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Carmel%2C_Israel), and lies on the Mediterranean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean) coast.
The city's sole official romanization (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization) Haifa and the common English (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/English_language)pronunciation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pronunciation) /ˈhaɪ.fə/ are based on the Arabic name Ḥayfā, whilst the unused Standard Hebrew name is Ḥefa, and the local Hebrew pronunciation is

The origin of the name Haifa is not clear. Some tie it to the Hebrew word חוף (hof, meaning "beach"), or חוף יפה (hof yafe, meaning "Beautiful beach"), or maybe the Hebrew verb root חפה (hafo, meaning "to cover or hide"). Christian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian) pilgrims of the Middle Ages (and later the Crusaders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Crusades)) called the town Caiphas or Caifa. The Christians believe the name derives from Caiaphas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caiaphas), the High Priest of Jerusalem (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem) during the time of Jesus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jesus), or from the Aramaic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aramaic_language) name of Saint Peter (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint_Peter), Cephas (כפא). Additionally, the name Sycaminon or Sykaminos, meaning "wild strawberry", is also used.

Haifa is first mentioned in Talmudic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talmud) literature around the 3rd century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3rd_century) CE, as a small town near Shikmona (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shikmona), the main Jewish town in the area at that time. The Byzantine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Byzantine_Empire) ruled there until the 7th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/7th_century), when the city was conquered — first by the Persians (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sassanid_dynasty), then by the Arabs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Islam). In 1100 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1100), it was conquered again by the crusaders (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Crusade), after a fierce battle with its Jewish inhabitants. Under crusader rule, the city was a part of the Principality of Galilee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Galilee) until the Muslim Mameluks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mameluks) attacked in 1265 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1265), leaving the city ruined and mostly abandoned until the 17th century (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/17th_century).

In 1761 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1761)Daher El-Omar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daher_El-Omar), Bedouin (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedouin) ruler of Acre (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Akko) and Galilee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galilee), destroyed and rebuilt the town in a new location, surrounding it with a thin wall. This event is marked by many as the beginning of the town's modern era. After El-Omar's death in 1775 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1775), the town remained under Ottoman (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ottoman_Empire) rule until 1918 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1918), except for two brief periods: in 1799 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1799), Napoleon Bonaparte (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon_Bonaparte) conquered Haifa as part of his brief and failed campaign to conquer Palestine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palestine_%28region%29) and Syria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syria), but withdrew the same year; and between 1831 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1831) and 1840 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1840), the Egyptian (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egypt) viceroy Mehemet Ali (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mehemet_Ali) governed, after his son Ibrahim Pasha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ibrahim_Pasha) wrested control from the Ottomans.

I just got back from the courts. I was there for only an hour cause I had to go to work. I will write later abote the matchs, here are the results (not 100% sure abote the scores) of the matchs I saw:

Keren Shlomo (ISR) def. (5)Leonie Mekel (NED) 6-3 2-6 6-3 :D
best match that I saw. Mekel is
Eva Fernandez (ESP) def. Doron Muravnik (ISR) 6-3 6-1 (or maybe 6-0 in the last set, I'm not sure). Eva played realy great for such a small girl!!
Some more results:
Nadia Lee (GBR) def. Nadezda Samoylo (RUS) 6-4 6-1 (something like that)
(Q)Elena Vianello (ITA) def. (Q)Ieva Irbe (LAT) 6-1 6-3
(8)Yana Levchenko (UKR) lead (wc)Victoria Tseitlin (ISR) 6-2 6-7 5-3 when I left.
(wc)Margarita Spicin (ISR) def. Julia Glushko (ISR) 7-6 6-3 (I will write later abote this one, it was very funny).

Brunel into the final, She has won the QF and SF in strights (sth like 6-1 6-3, 6-1 7-6 in both), she is playing very well.

in the other SF it is Smolenkova vs. Eva Fernandez
Score when I left: Smolenkova tied with Eva Fernandez 6-0 1-6
I only saw the first set, and thought Smolenkova played really really good!
