View Full Version : Venus just screwed her chances of finishing #1

She just withdrew from Linz. If she had played, and won, she would have been roughly 500 points from #1. And, by winning Munich, she would have finished #1 most likely. Well, now she'll be around 700 points no matter what for #1. And, Lindsay is now #2 for the year.

So, Venus, congratulations. You had another shot at getting #1, but you dicked yourself over.

Personally, I am glad that Venus is trying to take care of her body, and not playing when she was injured.

Hopefully she will be able to play Munic and have a good showing there.

I wouldn't say seh dicked her self out of being number one... even if she did win the next two tournaments, it would have also depended on Jenns performance.

Regardless... she'll get it eventually.

Venus may have just done a nivce job of INSURING she finishes 2002 #1. She'll be defending basically nothing after the USOpen next year. Especially since, with no match play in two months or so, she's a probable first round loser at Chase.

Her sponsors can NOT be happy about this.

Venus pracically lost not only chances to finish this year as #1. I now think she won't be ranked #1 for next 10 monthes at least.

Second-seeded Venus Williams has withdrawn from this week's Generali Ladies WTA indoor tournament in Linz, Austria.
Organisers of the $565,000 event announced the news on Sunday, saying that the American had cited wrist injury problems.

Williams has not been abroad since the 11 September terrorist attacks in New York and Washington and also pulled out of the Kremlin Cup last month.

"I was ready for the tournament. I am very disappointed and frustrated that I have to withdraw from Linz," Williams was quoted as telling the organisers in a statement.

Sanchez-Vicario moves up

She had told them she had incurred some superficial cut wounds to her wrist during training on Saturday.

Her withdrawal leaves Belgium's Justine Henin as the tournament's new second seed.

Defending champion Lindsay Davenport is seeded number one.

Spain's Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario now comes in as eighth seed.

Um. What exactly does she mean by 'superficial cut wounds'? How exactly do you cut yourself while playing tennis? Sounds a bit weird. A sprain would have made more sense.

Sigh, the only way Venus can get to number one is by playing a lot in the first part of the year. We'll see if she gets to number 1. I hope she does.

There are a few problems with all of that posturing about Venus losing the chance to finish the year at #1. Even if she played, there was no guarantee. If Jennifer even went to the quarters at Munich, she would have picked up enough points to stay ahead of venus. and it doesn't take into account what Lindsay can do by winning Linz and at Munich. Way too many variables to say what "would" have happened. YS ,your theory about venus screwing herself for the first ten months of 2002 is way off base too. Take a quick look at Venus's points for the first few months of the year and you'll see THAT is far from true. Again, there are so many variables and capriati, Venus and Lindsay are basically so close that you can write a bunch of different scenarios for the first few months of the year. And only when the players hit the courts will we see which one will play out.

Why is anyone suprised that Venus pulled out of Linz? This conveniently sets up her excuse for pulling out of Munich next week. I'd bet my paycheck on it. As I said in my topic thread "Do Venus and Serena really want it?" I don't think that being at the top is really their goal (at least not now). Think about it what's the point of getting to Number 1, just for someone to over take you two or three weeks later. By getting to number 1 it would force Venus to play more and thats obviously not what Venus or Serena wants right now. I don't think Venus is injured, this is the third tournament she's pulled out of since the US Open: first it was Filderstad (citing current world events-Somewhat understandable-althought other Americans were there, then it was Moscow-citing family reasons and now Linz-citing injury). Too me her excuses are too numerous to be credible. Does anyone know how many tournaments Venus and Serena have pulled out of this year alone? Probable more than they have played.

supremeross , I can't speak for other Venus fans, but I can tell you that I believe her when she says she's hurt... Venus knows her body and while it's frustrating that she is not playing I respect her decisions... She doesn't owe me anything... You think she is pulling out not to get to #1??? How absurd!!!!

What concerns me is the "Superficial cut wounds"...I've played tennis since I was 6, I've never cut my arms in anyway....The latest reasons from withdrawing from tournaments have been family reasons..I truly sincerly hope all is well in the Williams camp, like em or hate em, along with Martina, Lindsay, jennifer , Monica etc, they are Tennis.

What am I the only one who raised another eyebrow at Venus pulling out of her 3rd tournament in 7 weeks. I love Venus, but I don't think that she is prepared to become #1 just yet. I think Venus looks at someone like M. Hingis and shakes her head, I thinks she sees Hingis as someone who totally let tennis consume her life. I think tennis is important to Venus, but its not the be all and end all of all things. I think she tries to lead a balanced life and tennis is only one part of that equation. Venus doesn't want to commit to tennis full time b/c she would become bored with it, she got other intrests ... design school, endorsement obligations, designing for Wilson Leather, etc. etc. While becoming number 1 I'm sure is her goal, its just not her goal right now.

i still believe venus can finish number 1 by the french open, everyone has said venus had a sub par first half of the year this year, all she has to do is win a few more tournaments hopefully the french or australian open and she's got it,lindsay has a good shot of being number 1 next year as well, but i hope venus is the next number 1.

It's obvious that her wrists were taped, probably too tight, forcing cuts on her arms.

Personally, I think Venus wants to do what's best for her and let the rankings fall where they may. Not being #1 hasn't hurt her at all , has it?

As for her superficial cut wounds, I can understand, considering she bandages her wrists very tight and hits/practices with none other than her lil sis Rena who practically murders the ball (evil grin) Of course doing it regularly will eventually take it's toll

talk about some of the most pathetic excuses...you know she is not injured...Venus is pooped...she is not capable of playing a full season, so history will always see her as . "Yeah she won a few grandslams..but was never the best out there"

As a Venus fan I am not happy she is not playing at Linz, but I respect her, and I think is wise to keep healthy for the Chase , I hope she will be playing there.

And, by the way, I am positive she will be ranked n#1 after January, if she plays more tournaments.

BUT, even when she is ranked #4, SHE IS THE BEST PLAYER IN WTA.

NOW YES, ADRIAN, CASE CLOSED

I too do not believe that Venus can play a full season. Especially give her style of play. What bothers me is not her decision to withdraw but the often late timing of these decisions. First she sent an email committing herself to Linz; then she withdrew at the last minute after organisers had already promoted the tourny with her as the top seed. That is just unprofessional.

If her body is too delicate to withstand the kind of pressure that her style of play demands, that is not her fault. In which case, don't even pretend that you are going to play more than a handful of tournies per year with a special focus on the Grand Slams. That's what Venus does, that's what she will always do bec her wrists are not going to get larger anytime soon.

2002 will therefore be a repeat of 2001 as far as I am concerned. I would love to be wrong but I don't think I will be. And the tennis world will belatedly appreciate Hingis' enduring commitment to her sport. And her professionalism. Say what you will.
TC

She will finish at #3 now as she has withdrawn from Munich
