The place:
Wellington (Te Whanganui-a-Tara or Poneke) is the capital city of New Zealand (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Zealand), the country's second-largest urban area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_areas_of_New_Zealand) and the most populous national capital city in Oceania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oceania). Wellington stands at the southern tip of the North Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Island) in the geographical centre of the country.
New Zealand's major financial institutions are divided between Wellington and Auckland (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auckland), and some organisations have headquarters in both cities. It is New Zealand's political centre, housing Parliament and head offices for all government departments and ministries. Wellington is often described as New Zealand's cultural centre, boasting a world class film and theatre industry, Te Papa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Te_Papa) (the Museum of New Zealand), the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Its compact city centre supports an arts scene, café culture and nightlife much larger than most cities of a similar size.

Wellington was named in honour of Arthur Wellesley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Wellesley%2C_1st_Duke_of_Wellington), the first Duke of Wellington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duke_of_Wellington) and victor at the Battle of Waterloo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Waterloo). The Duke's title comes from the town of Wellington (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington%2C_Somerset) in the English county of Somerset (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Somerset).

In the Māori language (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M%C4%81ori_language) Wellington goes by two names. Te Whanganui-a-Tara (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Te_Whanganui-a-Tara) refers to Wellington Harbour and means "the great harbour of Tara". The alternative name Pōneke is often discouraged because of a belief that it is nothing more than a transliteration of the harbour's former nickname in English, Port Nick, short for Port Nicholson.

Like many cities, Wellington's urban area extends well beyond the boundaries of a single local authority. Greater Wellington or the Wellington Region (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellington_Region) means the entire urban area, plus the rural parts of the cities and the Kapiti Coast (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kapiti_Coast), and across the Rimutaka Range to the Wairarapa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wairarapa).

The Tournament:
Surface: Hard
Previous Winners:
2000: Mireille Dittmann AUS d. Leanne Baker NZL 76 16 76
2001: Suwei Hsieh TPE d. Shelley Stephens NZL 62 64
2002: Adriana Szili AUS d. Ilke Gers NZL 62 62
2003: Lauren Breadmore AUS d. Dubravka Cupac AUS 63 26 75
2004: Cindy Watson AUS d. Lauren Breadmore AUS 64 61
2005: Leanne Baker NZL d. Mireille Dittmann AUS 26 61 61

Wellington was always a good terrain for the "Kiwi" players. When we look at the 2000 draw, 6 years ago we can see how dynamic tennis on the ITF level is. From the players in the draw only Mireille Dittmann, Remi Tezuka, Leanne Baker and Tracey OŽConnor are still active. Top seed Mireille Dittmann got the title that year with wins over Markovic, Gers, Tippins, van Elden and Baker.
Su-Wei Hsieh had no problems at all to win the title in 2001. With Shelley Stephens, Ilke Gers, Leanne Baker and Nicola Kaiwai four New Zealand girls reached the quarters
In 2002 Ilke Gers surprisingly reached the final with nice wins over Eden Marama and Nicole Kriz. Adriana Szili was one level above the rest, which she showed with 60 61 over Keiko Tameishi, 61 61 over Julie Scott, 61 60 over Shelley Stephens, 60 61 over Tracey OŽConnor and 62 62 over Ilke Gers in the final.
In 2003 "Dubro" Dubravka Cupac reached the final with wins over top seed Shelley Stephens and Mandy Minella. Also in the draw, Pauline Parmentier
2004 had many good players. Breadmore, Chuang, Watson, Erakovic, Hewson, DŽAmelioor OŽConnor all played. Talent Marina Erakovic reached the SF (36 36 vs Breadmore).
Last year finally the first title for a player from New Zealand here. "Oldie" Leanne Baker played another "veteran" Mireille Dittmann in the final. Doubles specialist TRudi Musgrave nearly got double bageld by Marina Erakovic. KoreaŽs Ye-Ra Lee with wins over Rybarikova and Erakovic surprised

Kiwis Take To Court

Canterbury tennis player Ellen Barry will need to score a big upset if she is to progress past the first round of the US$10,000 ASB International women's Futures in Wellington.

Barry who turns 17 on Sunday and is ranked at 32 in world juniors faces second seed and 417th ranked Italian Francesca Lubiani, 25 who has been as highly ranked as 58 in the world.

Lubiani plays an unorthodox game of two hands on both sides of her body while Barry has well-coached strokes but has yet to really push her cause against higher ranked and more experienced opponents.

Leanne Baker returns to the Renouf Tennis Centre where she won the title last year. She is in good form with a win at the Taupo Futures,

Baker will have to watch out for her West Australian opponent Jessica Moore who at 15 years old reached the third round of the Australian Open juniors and after qualifying last week managed to work her way into the quarter-finals at Taupo.

Also on court are the two ex Wellington players Paula Marama who has spent the past few years in France and is up against Lisa Wilkinson now a resident in the Waikato.

Auckland 16-year-old has her second tough draw in as many weeks. In Taupo she played Leanne Baker in the first round this time she has drawn seventh seed and Taupo finalist Natsumi Hamamura of Japan. If she can get her big forehand and serve going Vano could trouble her opponent.

Vano and Marama play their first round doubles match as do Wanganui's Emma Hayman and Wilkinson, however they are up against Baker and Barry.

Meanwhile day one featured just two seeds in action with sixth ranked player Kyung-Mi Chang of Korea falling to countrywoman yoo-Mi Jung in straight sets 7-5 6-0.

Eighth seed Lisa D'Amelio of Australia cruised into the second round with a 6-2 6-2 win over Frenchwoman Sarah Aulombard and Britain's Jade Curtis took a while to warm up before dispatching Jessie De Vries of Belgium 6-4 6-1.

The only Kiwi in action was Waikato teenager, Hannah Fick who combined with Latvia's Trina Slapeka but were defeated by top seeds Lauren Barnikow(USA) and Italian Francesca Lubiani 6-2 6-3.

Singles first round results Lucia Gonzalez(AUS) bt (Q)Ashlee Brown 6-3 6-2, Bianca Acquistapace(AUS) bt Kit Carson(USA)6-3 6-1, Yoo-Mi Jung(KOR) bt (6)Kyung-Mi Chang(KOR) 7-5 6-0, Jade Curtis(GBR) bt Jessie De Bries(BEL) 6-4 6-1, (8)Lisa D'Amelio bt Sarah Aulombard(FRA) 6-2 6-2, (Q)Se-Na Lee(KOR) bt Hee-Sun Lyoo-Suh(KOR) 6-1 6-1, (Q)Katerina Kramperova(CZE) bt (Q)Wing-Yau Chan(HK) 6-3 6-1, (Q)Ling Zhang(HK) bt (Q)Brittany Sheed(AUS) 6-1 6-0.

Aulombard, I don't know why you can't seem to win matches.

TBE, any idea? I saw her play in a 25k, she managed to beat Ines Jabanksh easily but then lost easily the next round to Kristen Schlukebir. She grunts loud as hell too. Very pretty girl. She also managed to pull off an amazing doubles upset with Jessica Roland, but withdrew in the next round (Sarah jetted off to lose in the 1r of qualies in 75k deauville).

Marama & Baker In Quarters
Two New Zealand players gained places in the quarter-finals of the US$10,000 ASB International women's Futures in Wellington after three set victories.

Paula Marama and Leanne Baker both had hitches in the second sets of their match but still made the last eight of the tournament in breezy conditions with a little rain thrown in.

Marama, 21 served six aces and numerous other unplayable serves in her 6-1 2-6 6-1 win over Korean Yoo-Mi Jung.

Rain at 5-1 and 30-30 in the final set meant Marama who originally hails from Wellington but has spent the past few years based in France went inside to finish the match winning the remaining two points to set up a clash with top seed Mari Tanaka of Japan.

Baker the defending champion in Wellington beat her Korean opponent, Se-Na Lee 7-5 3-6 6-1 in the second round.

"I did what I had to do to win today," said Baker, although she did admit that the second set was not her best "It was just a loss of concentration. I've played a lot of tennis in the last week and half.

"The good thing is I know when I need to turn it on I can but hopefully I won't need to get to that stage again," she said.

Baker will now face British junior Jade Curtis who scored a win over second seed Francesca Lubiani of Italy.

Lubiani withdraw after complications with a right leg injury at 1-6 0-2 down.

Curtis at just 15-years-old is highly regarded in Britain and although not big in stature is ranked at 62 in the world in juniors and is very quick around the court.

"She's quick and is a good player. It's going to be tough against her. I'm going to have to step up a gear. I don't I'll be able to get away with playing like that again."

Sixteen-year-old Aucklander Kairangi Vano started well in her match against talented Hong Kong player Ling Zhang but found her opponent too consistent eventually going down 6-3 6-2. Zhang is one of the many players emerging from Asia. She is 16-years-old and ranked at 36 in the world in juniors.

Quarterfinal singles play commences at midday Friday.

Well your guess is as good as mine. I know that they (Eden & Paula) used to live and train in France. But about two years ago they split with their coach. Since then they have never played more than 4 tournament in a year. I know that Paula now lives in Melbourne, but I am not sure about Eden. They are such big talents gone to waste! They were a very good doubles pair too and were going to go to the Olympics for NZ in 2004, but pulled out for an umknowen reason. They are still very young so they have time on their side, its wether they can be bothered:o. Paula looks as if she wants to give it another crack, but Eden??

Baker Into Semis
New Zealand's Leanne Baker has won through to the semifinal of the US$10,000 ASB International women's Futures in Wellington.

Baker, 25 and ranked at 428 easily dispatched Britain's top junior Jade Curtis 6-0 6-3 to book a place in the semifinals where she will face eighth seed Lisa D'Amelio of Australia.

Baker's slice and spin style of play was too much for the British teenager who tried to hit the cover off every ball and was quickly found wanting.

"She (Curtis) was like a pocket rocket...she was so quick around the court. The match went according to plan but I don't think people like playing my slice game it's something they don't come across very often," said Baker who has now won eight matches in a row after taking out the Taupo Futures title last Sunday.

The Kiwi fifth seed has seen he semifinal opponent play on a number of occasions and is hoping rain stays away from the match.

"It will be an interesting match. I will have to think about how I play her. She comes into net a lot. I'm hoping it will be played outdoors."

Baker's match against Curtis ended just as the heavens opened forcing spectators and players indoors where Wellington professional Paula Marama will take on top seed Mari Tanaka of Japan this evening.

D'Amelio defeated fourth seeded American Lauren Barnikow 6-4 7-5.

Also progressing the last four was Czech teenager Katerina Kramperova who defeated Hong Kong's Ling Zhang 6-4 7-6(5).

ASB International Results: Quarter-finals Katerina Kramperova(CZE) bt (Q)Ling Zhang(HK) 6-4 7-6(5), (8)Lisa D'Amelio(AUS) bt (4)Lauren Barnikow(USA) 6-4 7-5, (5)Leanne Baker(NZL) bt Jade Curtis(GBR) 6-0 6-3.

Kiwis In Finals
Leanne Baker just keeps on winning. The 25-year-old is into another US$10,000 Futures final after she accounted for eighth seeded Australian Lisa D'Amelio 6-3 6-4 to reach the final of the ASB International in Wellington. The same venue she won at last year.

Baker is on a run of nine consecutive singles wins after taking the title at Taupo last week. If she wins in Wellington it will be her sixth career singles title. The fifth seed is also in her second doubles final in as many weeks.

In Taupo she was a beaten finalist in doubles with Italian Francesca Lubiani. This week it's with Canterbury's highly ranked world junior Ellen Barry who has her 17th birthday the day of the final. The pair won their doubles semi on Friday night.

They face fellow Kiwis Paula Marama of Wellington and Auckland junior Kairangi Vano in the final after they defeated second seeds Mari Tanaka of Japan and American Biffy Kaufman in straight sets.

Baker ranked at 428 had a battle in her singles semifinal against D'Amelio(ranked at 497) in the first set. The initial few games were all long and Baker had her serve broken in the fourth game but was able to return the favour in the eighth game before serving out the set.

"She had a hard game to play against. I was a little tired and strangely a little nervous too which is so bizarre. Now I'm in the final everything is cool," said Baker (what a great quote!!)

In the second set games were with serve until the ninth game where Baker broke D'Amelio's serve and then completed the match with a good service game.

Baker will face unseeded Katerina Kramperova the 37th ranked junior in the world in the final after the 17-year-old Czech made her first ever final of an ITF Futures event by upsetting top seed Mari Tanaka of Japan 6-2 6-4. Previously Kramperova had never ventured past the second round of a senior tournament.

"She (Kramperova) has nothing to lose against me. But I've got plenty of confidence behind me at the moment.

The singles final starts at 1pm followed by the doubles final.

ASB International results Singles semifinals Katerina Kramperova(CZE) bt (1)Mari Tanaka(JPN) 6-2 6-4, (5)Leanne Baker(NZL) bt (8)Lisa D'Amelio(AUS) 6-3 6-4 Doubles semifinal (WC)Paula Marama(NZL)/Kairangi Vano(NZL)bt (2)Biffy Kaufman(USA)/Mari Tanaka(JPN) 6-4 6-3

After watching the first 4 days of the tournament I think Leanne is playing better than Katerina, so unless Katerina can really put in a really top performance, Leanne should win this.

In the doubles it is harder to pick the better team but my guess is for Leanne Baker and Ellen Barry to beat Paula Marama and Vairangi Vano.

Another Singles Win For Baker
Leanne Baker collected her second singles title at the US$10,000 ASB International women's Futures in Wellington but missed out on collecting the full set of titles at the tournament with a defeat in the doubles final.

Baker, 25 the tournament fifth seed played a topsy-turvy singles final against the fleet-footed Czech Katerina Kamperova, 17 who was in her career first final.

In the windy conditions both players struggled to hold serve in the first set. There were five breaks of serve as Baker won the set 6-4.

"It was always going to be scratchy with the conditions and the wind and I was a bit tired from playing so much tennis," said Baker after the match.

The second set had the top-40 ranked junior from Prague race away with the set breaking the Kiwis serve on three occasions to win the set 6-1.

In the third set it was all Baker as she refined her game and her opponent starting making errors.

Baker took the set and the match for the loss of no games and a score of 6-4 1-6 6-0.

It was Baker's sixth career ITF singles title, her second in consecutive years at Wellington and her second in consecutive weeks after her triumph in Taupo.

"It's been a great two weeks. I've pulled out some decent tennis. I'm pleased with both weeks. I no I can play better which gives me a lot of confidence."

Baker now travels to Australia for a series of US$25,000 challenger events.

In the doubles final Baker and Ellen Barry from Canterbury who was celebrating her 17th birthday and was in her first final were defeated by fellow Kiwis Paula Marama and Kairangi Vano 6-3 6-1.

For Marama it was her tenth ITF Futures doubles title but for Vano, 16 it was her first final and first win.

Vano from Otara in Auckland will now have to return to school at St Kents but will continue playing ITF junior events and the odd senior tournament.
