View Full Version : Will this be an 'Old Guard' or a 'Changing of the 'Guard' slam?

In 2004, it looked like a changing of the guard was on in women's tennis. Two teenaged slam winners. 2005 reversed that trend, as all four slams were won by well-established players, with mutliple GS finals appearances. In fact, every finalist had at least four previous GS finals appearances.

So what will OZ bring? Will the winner be one of the 'old guard'? Players with repeated GS finals appearances? Or from the group with only one? And of course, their are som veteran players who don't fit into either group. Myskina, Schnyder, Mauresmo, Dementieva. Or four finals between the four of them, but the youngest of them is 25.

Old guard. I see no scenario in which a Belgian or an American doesnt win.

I am hoping for a new winner, just to shake things up. Would be pretty cool if Mauresmo finally breaks thru. I think, however, it will be a previous Slam winner.

Someone from the top half had better win given that draw! So since there are several veterans battling it out, there is a possibility that someone new could slip through. But I'd say the same players who always contend: Belgians, Williams, and Davenport.

old guard. I don't see anyone from the new guard quite ready to win a GS yet.

Considering that the "old guards" will be battling injuries and each other, it's possible that someone new could emerge. The "old guards" would have to be injuried or play a lousy match for that to happen though because the "old guards" are still above the rest regardless of their rankings.

Old guard. I smell a Justine vs. Martina final.

unfortunately the new gurard is concentrated in one quarter. Third quarter from the top. they are all in Mauresmo's and Schnyder's quarter.
Mirza and Krajicek will face off first(cannuck hockey term)
the winner may face Mauresmo.
the winner of that may face Vaidisova.
The winner of that will face the winner of safina myskina winner vs schnyder perhaps it will be Safina

I'm think oldguard because of Henin, Hingis, Davenport, Mauresmo, and maybe Clijsters all doing well.
