View Full Version : AO 1R Showdown: Defending Champ S Williams (13) VS Na Li

Obviously I was going to make a SHOWDOWN thread for this match  . The defending champion Serena Williams faces a tough opening match to open up her defense of the title. With her own injury and fitness problems, Na Li is not the type of player that Serena would like to open up against. She is powerful and can go blow for blow with Serena from the baseline, as she did with Lindsay at the USO 1R. She is also fast. Serena's serve was in havoc against double fault queen Dementieva at Hong Kong. If Serena has not fully recovered, she is looking at duplicating Sveta's USO and Nastya's FO feat of losing 1R and a ranking in the fourties :tape:

Na, bad luck with draw again but you can definitely beat Serena. http://www.cnhubei.com/images/200501/xiaying0501100.JPGhttp://www.functionx.com/people/swilliams/swilliams2.gif

I think Serena can win it, we haven't really seen her play since 2005. Hong Kong was not taken serious by her at all, that is for sure. You really can't tell. I hope she is ready to go.

I doubt Li would win. Serena will show up. We should be able to see a Sharapova-Williams fourth round clash.

Umm...Well Myskina and Kuznetsova lost to people who's biggest wins in their career will be those.
Na Li is projected to be a top 20 or even top 10 player.
She played Lindsay close at US Open 1st round last year. Could be even closer at AO.

Didn't this girl just lose 2 and 2 to Pennetta at Gold Coast?

Na Li is such a good player. She needs a good coach I think to fulfill her potential. What a bad draw for her. DId she draw Sharapova in the second round last year?
I think Serena will win. She has never lost in the first round and she really wouldn't participate if she thought she couldn't win a match. But Im rooting for Na Li.

Didn't Li Na beat Pennetta less than 6 days after that lost?

Well that shows her inconsistency. She stays with Davey at the Open 4 and 4. Then a couple weeks later lost to her 2 and 2.

Serena is a different player in the slams. She was totally on her way out in the first round of Wimbledon 2005 and Australian Open 2003, but in both of those matches, she found a way to win. Something that the Russians aren't as great at. Serena hasn't lost in the first round of a slam EVER! Something I don't think any other active multiple slam champion has achieved (maybe except for Davenport and Pierce). She looks like she is rounding into form, and remember, Serena is most dangerous when underestimated. However, no one will know until the match happens. So I'm just biding my time until then.

My prediction:

Serena wins: 7-6 5-7 6-3

A beast? what?

Clijsters wasn't injured then...Na was off and tired...she's a big-hitter.

Na in this one 6-3, 7-6(5)

Serena in two. The guy said she was hitting the ball well. That's all she'll need against Na.

People are underestimating Serena, same thing happened last year in OZ and look what happened.....crow eating Bud Collins, Mary Carillo, Dick Enberg, Pam Shriver, and many trolls on this board. :wavey:

Serena will win in 2 sets.
I see a lot of people says she is in bad shape and she can't get a win in this form.
In last year's Aus Open, she started playing badly and finished winning the title.
I can't take her out. She is a big fighter.

Jan 13th, 2006, 07:03 AM
I saw Li play Kim and I was impressed with Li, she's brave and goes for her shots-she hit more winners than Kim, her return was good and her serve is not that bad. However she doesn't play the important points well, her inexperience shows through.

If Rena is off it might be a tight match, but Serena's game, fight and desire will pull through.
I wonder if Rena's booming serve is back....

Poor Na, she always has such terrible draws. I'd love her to actually beat one of these top players, because I real feel she is capable and has a chance. Go Na! :hearts:

if Serena plays anywhere near the level we see her in slams Li will not have a chance and will be wiped off the court in under and hour.

if she is off her game it could be a 3 setter that could go either way

I say Serena in straights because, first and foremost, she's that much better than Li. Also, as many people have pointed out, Serena would need a map to find the top 20 if she loses, and she's not about to let that happen without a fight.

Serena wins 7-6, 7-5. She's tough to beat in the first round of Grand Slams - that's why she's never lost in the first round. If she's going to lose at this tournament, it won't be in this match.

Serena 6-3 6-4
She will be hungry and motivated and will cut down on errors. I hope.
I think she will have been doing some serious thinking over the last few weeks. I hope she will have decided that what she wants is a glorious tennis career and not a mediocre acting/ fashion one.
Of course this is all my imagination and what i wish for her. If she does give an error prone performance and injury/ lack of fitness takes its toll and Li plays to her potential resulting in a Li victory, I think we will see a super strong Serena winning Wimbledon in 2006. This kind of loss will be too much too bear on top of all the other disspiriting ones and will be the final straw! ( although that should really have been the loss in Beijing.....)
Good luck Serena!

How big is Na's serve? She needs to gte a high serve percentage to have a good chance. Serena WILL attack anything below 125 mph. So she is in some deep trouble if she can't produce anything higher :o

It reminds me of Sabatini's serve, I dunno why. It's not really like it.

It's pretty slow and she chokes a lot (like at 40-0 back to deuce), but her groundstrokes are really big, and she plays (apart from serve) a lot like Davenport.

On talent alone Serena should win, but I worry about her knee, and she hasn't played any tennis worth note for over a year...... She needs to be really focused.

Serena fans you really have little to worry about.

Even if na gets close to winning *Which is very unlikely* She will likely choke.

Unless Serena retires injured there's only 1 winner.

Serena wins 6-1 7-5  :)
