Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues beat Israel's Shahar Peer 6-7 7-5 6-4 in the semi-finals of the Canberra Classic after one of the longest recorded matches in women's tennis history on Thursday.
The pair slugged it out in scorching temperatures for three hours and 40 minutes in a marathon battle that left both players close to exhaustion.

It was the sixth longest singles match played between two women. The longest on record was a six and a half hour battle between Vicki Nelson-Dunbar and Jene Hepner in 1984, which featured one point that last 29 minutes and 634 shots. The second longest match lasted four hours seven minutes.

The first set of Thursday's match between Medina Garrigues and Peer took 90 minutes before being decided by a tiebreak, and the second set lasted 12 games.

Medina Garrigues led 5-1 in the third but Peer fought back to take the next three in a row before the Spaniard finally finished her off.

"It was difficult because it was very hot and there were many long points," Median Garrigues told reporters.

"But I am a Spanish player and all our matches are long. I am very pleased to win."

Peer said: "I don't ever like to lose but I am not unhappy with how I played. I think I had my chances, perhaps next time I will take them."

Medina Garrigues will play either Colombian Catalina Castano or Korean Cho Yoon-jeong in Friday's final. They were due to meet in Thursday's second semi-final.

Wow, sounds pretty intense...a nice fight from Peer! But, Hopefully this will leave Anabel very exhausted for the final, and we will see a first time winner. ;)

I like Anabel more each time I see her. Shame I don't see her all that often, and when I do its against a top seed at a GS, but yeah, she's cool :)

I would have been in disbelief watching that point live.

You could have left, used the facilities, bought a hot dog and come back to see the point finish.

That match concluded with a 13-11 tiebreak lasting 1 hour 47 minutes! Nelson-Dunbar won that epic point with an overhead to level the tiebreak at 11-11.

She could also break another record and win the Australian Open. Who knows? Anything is possible on the WTA Tour.
