I think it's high ranking for Fran at #12, after this victory.

She's great. With her, Flavia and Roby, italy can be very competitive in the future!

At least now I hope Franny goes for that elusive first title, although it will be tough against Justine.

I can't believe people are so surprised about this...Vaidisova at this point is so overrated; I just looked up het H2H against top 20 players and it's abysmal:

Davenport 0-1 (0-2 if you include Hong Kong)
Mauresmo 0-1
Pierce 0-1
Henin 0-2
Schnyder 0-1
Petrova 1-1
Venus 0-1
Schiavone 1-2
Ivanovic 0-1
Kuznetsova 0-1

only players she has a winning record against are Dechy and Myskina

she IS very promising but still has a LONG way to go

I agree with u ;) even though she has 5 titles. I don't think she can be a GS champion soon.

Frannie is a dangerous player for someone like Nicole who essentially is still learning how to play the game.

yep once again showing how overrated Vaidisova is. I'm not trying to give the girl a hard time because she's got a big future. But in the majority of the matches she's had with the better players she's still looked out of her league.

players like Fran and Patty often shows the younger generation up if their not ready.

I watched it.

Nikki was off, and Francesca has a dangerous game for her. It was all about her hustle and consistency.

All week, Nicole has not looked like missing a forehand. Today, Francesca ran down forehands that would usually be winners, and Nikki pushed too hard. She kept hitting them long or wide.

Then she changed tactics and tried to come into the net. And I hate to say this, but she is terrible with the finer aspects of the game. I've seen her attempt two dropshots from inside the service line this week, and both have barely made the net.

Her volleys weren't as bad, but she doesn't hit them with any conviction. She sort of deflects them into the open court with no stick, which is OK, but Fran is a great mover, and she kept tracking them down and passing Nikki.

Nevertheless, I have been very impressed with Nikki this week, and I have to say that her forehand is technically very beautiful, which it doesn't really appear like on TV.

People are surprised because didn't Schiavone crash out of the tournament last week in the first round ?
And Vaidisova ( i will NOT call her "Nikki" because i do NOT know her personally) - she has a 'good' game, not 'great' yet. Lots of crazy errors.

Nicole :o :smash:

I just watched the match on ES. Francesca won just because she was solid and patient. Nicole did so many silly UEs (total around 35 :help: ). She was at the top of so many pts and then she couldn't execute the final shot :o Francesca ran down every point and wasn't afraid of Nicole's power. Really well deserved victory for Francesca. And congrats for a new career high (11.) :worship:

Please be more patient and don't get nervous so easily Nicole :o

I saw this match and now I can tell that there is a long way for Nicole to reach the best world level. Technique is really bad. She has a potential but I'm not sure how far will she go. ;)

Congrats F-R-A-N-C-E-S-C-A

And my dreams come true. Justine- Francesca final in Sydney.

In a way Francesca conned Nicole out of the match. Nicole had more BP, but just couldn't up her level to take them. For most of the first set Nicole looked like the eventual winner. Then she went through a period of about six games when she just couldn't hit a shot in court. That lost her the first set and left her 1-4 down in the 2nd.

Mostly she was out foxed by Schiavone, who ran nearly everything down and got it back in court hard and tricky, as well as some powerful serving from the Italian.

The stats don't lie but surely every up-and-coming player starts out with losses against the game's top players. She is hyped because she won three Tier III's and has obviously mastered the destruction of anyone ranked below 30. Given her progress it is expected that most of these H2H's will soon turn in her favour.

i thought Nicole did OK. Bit of variety, nice power and pretty good fighting ability. nearest thing to a future top 3 teen player I have seen since Maria on 2004 form. Francesca frazzled her head - too much came back and long rallies ended one way most of the time. Fran actually put her self off at one point by marvelling at how fast she was moving. With nothing going easy it wasn't surprising that Nicole lost the first set with a bad service game. Fran managed to wear her brain out a bit more by managing to win the tough games by upping her own attack and defending breakpoints to the last in the second set . Nicole basically got a lesson in balls coming back, not dropshoting one of the fastest players on the tour and how to win the key points.

Franny is obviously carrying on her form from last year then!

She was a bit contained compared with last year - it was a match of winning the big points not rolling through the opposition .Serve was good but it was even better against Serena. According to eurosport she has changed racquets and may be still getting use to it.
