GO ON MARION ! paul_masterton May 7th, 2002, 07:13 PM Report Arrived at 9:45, Jamie delgado (GBR) wandered to collect his rackets at 9:55, he was first on court at 10. He hadnt practised AT ALL. After winneing teh 2dn set he got bageled, serves him right the lazy git. Spent most of the day in the press/stringin room talking with Rob and the stringers who are really interesting people. Anyway, Lucie popped in for a bit and had a wee chat, then went off to get ready. Lucie Ahl bt Berger 63 63 Ahl got broken in the first game, but then broke back. Indeed the first set had 7 breaks out of 9 games!! [plus a further 3 in teh second set]. Berger question about every line call and Lucie just ignored her totally and waled roudn to teh other side of court, or at down if it was teh end of a game. Lucie won to become teh first brit to recah teh second round at teh whole tournament. Me and Rob (whos taking me fro work experience) met her as she came off court and then we got to interview her. it was soooo cool!! She talked to us for about 10 mins then went away. She is such a nice girl. Rob was getting me to write a practise press release for experience so we set about that as news came in of Liggan's ammoth win and Lubiani's shock exit. Scottish #1 Alan makin was up next and he clobbered his 7th seeded opponent (ranked 350 places higher) 61 62. Interviewed him *not that ull care about that) Georges bt Baltacha 62 63 'Bally' was really struggling, lots of unforced errors. She was hampered by a back injury, but admitted in her later inteview that that wasnt why she lost, it was just because she didnt play well at all. Elena called teh tainer at 21 down in teh 2dn set, and was doing stretches for about 10mins. Elena broke Georges, but it was too little too late as she crashed out. For the rest of the day i edited my pres release, which rob is gonan give me feedback on tomorrow, and watched a couple of men's doubles matches on the centre court below our 'room'. Sorry i didnt cathc much more tennis but a) there was only 6 matches on (all at same time) and b) i was really busy. I think Coombs/Webley-Smith bt Simkin/Berry, but im not 100% sure. There was 1 other doubles match, but dont knwo score. Paul :D TheBoiledEgg May 7th, 2002, 08:25 PM what Lubiani shock exit, i was suprised she won a set. She lead 63 and served fro teh match at 5-4. ON teh first point she hit a forhand which was in, Georges (who made about 15 line calls said it was out. The umpire came down, Sophie showed him a amrk that was clearly out, but that wasnt teh mrk of lucies shot! Luciewent absolutelyy mental, and had some words with teh umpire, she lost that game to 15. Then she served for teh macth t 65 and had 2 MP!!! She blew them both with poor forehands (that shot was off all day), she had arguemtns with a line jusdge and got a warning, Lucie gave ehr evils fro teh rest of teh match. Lucie lost teh tiebrekad 7-5 saving 2 set points. The second set was teh same, Lucie got to 5-4, not serving though, and twice Georges served for teh match. Went to a tiebreak ,Luciefell nehijdn early on and never came back. Sje was absolutely furious, we were all so upset becsue she was last brit left in whole competition of mens adn women's singles. she wouldnt do an interview even 4 hours later! You have been on ITF finals go and take this one also :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D spiceboy May 11th, 2002, 06:44 PM If at the beginning of the week anyone would have told me that 2 players out of the top 300 would make the final and that we couldn't see Wartusch, Domínguez Lino, Pin or Bartoli in the semis I wouldn't have believed it for a second.   TheBoiledEgg May 11th, 2002, 06:50 PM I knew Barbora had a good shot here but i really didn't expect Sofia to beat Marion Bartoli. Bartoli v Strycova would have been even more brilliant. Finalists have never met in juniors either so ....... but i still expect Barbora to win this pretty easily. Martian KC May 11th, 2002, 07:45 PM I was confident Barbora would do well! But Sofia has surprised me first by beating Marion! Gooo Barbora, take the title!:p paul_masterton May 11th, 2002, 07:52 PM not much to say really. Strycova was pretty comfortable after she got teh 2nd set. oh, and she tok off her trouser only to find she had no skirt underneath, so had to hurridly put it on!! Arvidsson had 2 match points, lost them both. then saved 1 then won on her 4th She shoudl ahve won it 61 62, but fell apart. aul paul_masterton May 11th, 2002, 08:26 PM this is teh press release i worte today as part of my work experience: Youth overcame experience in yesterday's (11th May) semi-finals of the Scottish Championships in Edinburgh as Czech Barbora Strycova upset 5th seed Conchita Martinez Gradanos to claim a place in the final alongside fellow teenager Sofia Arvidsson, who came through a mammoth two hours and 18 minute match against Anotaneta Pandjerova. Strycova, the 16 year old world junior No.1 made a shaky start against her Spanish opponent, some 11 years her senior, dropping the first set 6-3. The petulant Oz Open Junior champion fought her way back in, levelling the match at one set all. Full of confidence, Strycova smacked winners from all over the court to claim her first final appearance at senior level. In the day's other semi-final, Swedish qualifier Sofia Arvidsson appeared completely in control in her tie against Pandjerova when she took the first set 6-1, but a series of unforced errors allowed the Bulgarian to take the second set 6-4. Arvidsson wasted two match points at 5-3 up in the decider, before saving one herself to force the tie-breaker. Arvidsson strolled to a 6-2 lead in the tie-break, taking it 7-3 to set up the youngest ever final at the Scottish event. Many spectators felt that the match had all the qualities of an exciting final. In the men's event, Frenchman Jean-Rene Lisnard came back from a poor first set to beat Uzbekistani giant Oleg Ogorodov 1-6 6-3 6-4. The diminuitive Frenchman fought doggedly back into the match, running down every ball and increasingly frustrating his opponent. Ogorodov had staged a small comeback in the third set, coming from 5-1 to 5-4 before eventually bowing out. Lisnard now meets Alexandre Simoni, the only seed left in the competition. The Brazilian overpowered Argentinean Martin Vassallo Arguello 6-4 6-2 in an entertaining match on centre court. Vassallo Arguello, who earlier this week, ended the hopes of Scotland's Alan Mackin, was no match for the 6th seed, who dismissed a small set-back in the first set to cruise through. Paul :D Alek May 11th, 2002, 08:28 PM pf sofia's match was very long now barbora will beat her like she did against sophie georges georges beats ahl in 3 sets the second and third 6-7 6-7 obviously she was very tired and then lost 6-0 6-0. now sofia makes the same but hopefully can proove me wrong and take the title to home. VAMOS SOFIA! TheBoiledEgg May 11th, 2002, 08:40 PM thanx for report Paul :) pretty good read Scotso May 11th, 2002, 09:07 PM Heja Sofia! Scotso May 12th, 2002, 12:28 AM I think Barbora will unfortunately win this. She has got a great draw all the top seeds except 1 lost before facing her and in long matches, like Sophie Georges who was obviously tired and her 6-0 6-0 loss to Barbora shows it. Beating an inconsistent Lubiani who hasnt done really well this year is nothing from out of this world. And beating Conchita Martinez-Granados in semis in 3 sets... 3-6 6-3 6-1 can show a bit of tiredness. Meanwhile Arvidsson played qualifying, beat Bartoli, Wartusch, Van Acker, Pandjerova. Beating Bartoli and Wartusch was great and I think that Arvidsson deserves the title, even if deserving it doesn't mean much. I hope Arvidsson wins but I think Strycova will win in a slightly tight first set and then a steamroll. TS May 12th, 2002, 02:29 AM Go Barbora :) Great effort from both! But Im pulling for the Czech in the final! BTW, great work Paul :) Alek May 12th, 2002, 02:54 AM I agree with Scotso but I hope Sofia continues her good form and do not be tired tomorrow.
