Venus Williams injured ahead of Australian Open

January 5, 2006

HONG KONG (AP) -- Venus Williams sustained an undiagnosed injury at an exhibition tournament Thursday, but still managed to win in straight sets.

After a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sania Mirza at the Champions Challenge, Williams said she wasn't sure what her injury was because her physical therapist isn't in Hong Kong, only revealing she felt "something's off-balance in my back, or pelvis."

She didn't think the injury was serious, but limited her mobility.

"I think it's something that they can fix," she said. "I was in pain. It was really tough to move and I couldn't move fast."

Williams, like younger sister Serena, is fresh from an injury break toward the end of 2005. She won Wimbledon but faded later in the year, failing to qualify for the year-end WTA Championships. Williams is currently ranked 10th in the world.

Williams said she wanted to stay on court because she won't be playing any more tournaments before the Australian Open, which starts Jan. 16. She took an injury time-out in the first set during the match against Mirza.

If it was something serious she wouldn't risk it against Davenport with the OZ Open so close. I guess we will see if its a real worry for her in tomorrows match.

Simply looks as if she just needs an
alignment of her back.

Should be an easy fix and Venus
doesn't sound worried so I am
sure it'll be fine.

BTW, is it okay to post

I hope Venus is fine, don't want her worrying about anything except winning all her rounds at the Aus Open.

Wow, the season is barely starting and we've got three of the biggest names in the game in questionable health. :(

I hope Vee is okay for the AO, it would really suck if Venus, Sharapova, Jen, Nadal, Agassi, and Safin were all out.

She said herself its not serious, I know the fans are bound to be a bit concerned but she is not dying! She played on and I'm sure she will be fine tomorrow.

Venus is my favorite so I could either panic OR be hopeful that the days off will take care of this seemingly temporary problem.

I'll opt for the latter. Okay? :p

I think that a muscle in her back is irritated. I know this it causes pain but a massage and a warm bath do wonders;)

I have a feeling that Vee will be ok for AO, but she might play it safe 2morrow vs. Lindsay. This injury isn't serious sounding, so she should be fine.

Just love a person
who is rational and uses
common sense w/o all the melo-dramatics.
