Hopefully a very good year.

Shahar start the season at Tier IV Auckland. her quarter:
(8)Zvonareva - Suarez
Cho - Peer
Frazier - Azarenka
Blahotova - (4)Kirilenko

Tricky first round, Cho is not a pushover. But Cho plays alot like Shahar which should play into Shahar hands, because she just plays it better right now.
In the Second round Shahar may face a confident Zvonareva after beating Paola Suarez in the first round or a confident Suarez after beating Vera. Shahar will have to play really well to win this one.
This quarter is really packed with great players

Good luck!

First match of 2006, Shahar trails 6-7(0) 0-2  (Rain delay)
That tiebreak  and second set
Thats what happen when you change your serve at the start of the season, hopefully it will pay off in the long run.

Fight and turn this match around! :)

Atleast tzipi qualified :D

Not the way we wanted the year to start but the serve had to improve so I am glad that she is changing it.

Yes, but she is changing it to even less hard-hit serve
just spinning it more so 1st serve percentage will be high.

Anyway, Canberra:
4-Peer vs Sprem
Daniilidou vs Shaughnessy
Razzano vs Nakamura
Vento Kabchi vs 5-Vinci

Tough draw, but if Shahar wants to rise in the ranking she should get to the QF/SF here. So far she really hasn't lived up to her seeding. She is learning this year that it's not so easy to be the favourite.
Good luck.

Important win for Shahar over Karolina Sprem 7-5, 6-3. It would not have been good to start the year with two straight losses even though Sprem is a pretty solid player who was in the Top-20 a year ago.

Sprem was serving for the 1st set but Shahar broke her and eventually took the set. Nice fight by Shahar.

Lurking in the same half of the draw as Medina Garrigues is No.4-seeded Shahar Peer, who overcame a massive 5-1 deficit in the first set, eventually advancing to the quarterfinals with a 76(0) 62 victory over former Top 15 player Eleni Daniilidou of Greece. The Israeli teenager, one of the Tour's most promising future stars, next faces Japan's Aiko Nakamura, who stunned No.5 seed Roberta Vinci 75 60 in their second round encounter. Nakamura used her flat, two-fisted groundstrokes to thwart the relentless net-rushing tactics of the young Italian, reaching just her second career Tour singles quarterfinal in the process. Peer and Nakamura have played twice previously, with Peer winning in three tough sets in 2004 US Open qualifying and in two sets in 2005 Auckland qualifying.

Well done Shahar, nice comback. good luck in the QF :scared: ;)

Good win for Shahar as Eleni is a talented player. Once again, Shahar did a good job of not giving up when she was down in the 1st set. I'm looking forward to next one - the 1st time that I ever saw Shahar play was against Nakamura in the 2004 US Open Qualies. Shahar showed that she is a fighter that day and I've been a fan ever since.

Koreans play alot like the japanese players - though they aren't as succesful (both countries have it as school sport activity - thus the large interest in it for so many years) but shahar SHOULD win it.
tammy is a bit of a riddle. her performance is always a question mark - and she's a type of player shahar doesn't have much experience against (lost to asagoe in the ozzy open though - that would be a bad sign as tammy is closer to her aggressive fast court style than to baseliners whom shahar does better against - she also barely beat sugiyama, who's attacking style is the same classic asian approuch) though she did beat stosur - but only on clay.

frankly - i think tammy will beat her. when given pace, she get's into a rythm and can potentially beat most of the girls on tour. it's still not total S&V, but it's going to be a partisan crown and she's really adored there. she's shooting for the title, nothing less.

Meteor Shower
Feb 4th, 2006, 08:24 PM
I doubt it, tanasugarn is no way near her best form. She's had a bad 2005 and she doesn't show any signs of getting back into form in 2006..
If shahar beat Sugiyama, even barely. She should beat Tanasugarn.

I was happy with the Canberra showing against Sprem and Daniilidou. She's beaten them in straights without any mental lapses, and now when the QF barrier is gone, I expect even more from her.

If Shahar will be calm and focused throughout this turnament, she can win the title. If not, there is always the army to blame :p but seeing the tour condition now, no reason why she shouldn't be top30 atleast. She has the tennis (even now), its just about the mental stuff, which I hope she'll prove us she has plenty of.

P.S I bet on Maria Sanchez Lorenzo to win the match against Tanasugarn.

P.S I bet on Maria Sanchez Lorenzo to win the match against Tanasugarn.

I'm with you there ASAP. Sanchez Lorenzo can be dangerous and this is not the easiest of 2nd round matchest, asuming Shahar wins the 1st.
The AO was unfortunate but its not as if Shahar lay down against a weak player. In any case, she got to a semi-final to start the year - now that monkey is off her back. So I would not say the trip down under was a total disaster.

As for the seeds, the numbers continue to drop as only two are left with the dismissal of No.2 seed and recent Pattaya City champion Shahar Peer at the hands of Maria Elena Camerin, 64 62.

"It was a very tough first-round match," Camerin said. "She just won Pattaya and she would have a lot of confidence.

"The first set was very good, then I went down 0-2 in the second set. After I brought it back to 2-2, she went away. I think she was tired, probably mentally. I played well inside the court and didn't give her space to play her game."

Shahar inconsistency strikes again this years.
Last year she was so consistent, got to alot of QF and never passed them.
This year she plays 5 turnys, get to one SF and win another title, and in the other three loses in the first round, totally different Shahar? :o

hope she'll get her consistency back soon, I don't want her to be those ball-bashers that wins one turny and losses 1st round of the next, her consistency is whats seperates her from (most of) the other up-and-coming girls.

Anyway, now a good rest for Shahar. winning another title in India would be a huge physical effort, thats the only good thing I take from this loss.

India's Mirza hopes to partner Israeli Peer again
Wed Mar 8, 2006 5:54 AM GMT

By Matthew Cronin

INDIAN WELLS, March 7 (Reuters) - India's Sania Mirza is hoping to renew her doubles partnership with Israel's Shahar Peer despite protests from some Muslim and Jewish groups.

Mirza, whose poor recent form has seen her slip from a career-high ranking of 31 at the end of 2005 to 45th, said she would have played with Peer at this week's Pacific Life Open, but the Israeli player had already booked a partner.

"You shouldn't mix up sports with anything else," the 19-year-old told Reuters at the March 8-19 tournament in Indian Wells.

"If I had to follow the stereotype of what a woman athlete should be in India, then I wouldn't be playing tennis because there aren't many girls who pick up rackets when they are six. If you believe it's right, if your loved ones believe it's right, then it's right."

Mirza and Peer united for the first time when they reached the quarter-finals of the event in Bangkok last October, but their partnership was met with anger by some religious groups.

"We are playing sports," Peer said at the time in Thailand. "We don't think about politics. It's a good idea to bring (cultures) together, but we will play together because we want to and will have good results."

VERY EMOTIONAL

Mirza enjoyed a breakout season in 2005, capturing her first WTA title in Hyderabad and reaching the fourth round of the U.S. Open before succumbing to Russia's Maria Sharapova.

But her results in 2006 have been poor. She has won just three singles matches in five events since the turn of the year.

"You should never be satisfied. People come up with that I'm the first Indian woman to accomplish blah, blah, blah, and that's the hardest part for me," said the 28th seed for Indian Wells.

"I would like to believe I'm tough enough to cope with all this pressure, but everyone has their moments," she said. "We're not machines, we're human. We have our breakdowns and feel lonely.

"I know the pressure is getting harder by the day," she said. "People in India get very emotional about their heroes, but I'm going to try to block out as much as I can."

Under the tutelage of Roger Federer's coach Tony Roche, Mirza has changed her service action and believes she's making progress.

"The second year is tougher," she said. "People know your weaknesses more. That's why I'm changing my serve now because people were taking advantage of it. It couldn't get worse, so it had to get better."

next round vs. Safina.. Shahar has lost to a few players twice. Hope the drive for revange (in tennis of course ;) ) after Safina killed her last time can give her more chance to win this one. But she musn't crumble after one set like vs. Sharapova!

Andy.

Well both of these players love clay Shahars retrieving game will be at its best on thos surface and she will have a real chance to win this match, but Dinara loves clay as well, it will be a tough match but definatly one that she will be compeditive and have a chacne in.

Meteor Shower

Hope she isn't injured or something, she never lost so badly. and twice in three matches to an 'ok' players. She even pushed Serena and Maria!

Really bad form, hope a few wins in the Fed Cup, will bring her confidence back. But it will be very tough as she is the no.1 player and she can play against Ivanovic,Hantuchova,Arvidson :scared: but I believe in her, KADIMA SHAHAR! :woohoo:

Nimrodg
Apr 7th, 2006, 10:29 AM
I think it's well clear to everyone what's the problem of Shahar, and I don't think it's injury. She got to improve her serve, otherwise she will keep being without a win against top 30 opponents.

Meteor Shower
Apr 7th, 2006, 11:00 AM
The serve is a minor reason to why she lost. the main reason is her groundstrokes.

First serve percentage was 60%. I doubt Safina smacked her first serves easily, specially at clay. She does need to improve her serve, but thats only to win in 3 sets instead of losing in 3 sets. If she is trashed like that, even a serve like Davenport's can't help her.

Anyway, she changed her serve alot, and it takes alot of time to get used to it, so lets give her more time.

On another note, and I know I'm talking to myself here ;) I like Shahar schedule!

Not playing too much, to not burn herself out. I didn't know how much turnaments she could play because of the army, but seems she play enough. Shahar plays Fedcup, then TierVI Prague and then TierI Rome. nice mix there, I like :)

Her quarter:
(3)Shahar Peer (ISR) v (wc)Nikola Frankova (CZE)
Zuzana Ondraskova (CZE) v Mariana Diaz-Oliva (ARG)
Melinda Czink (HUN) v Antonella Serra-Zanetti (ITA)
Martina Sucha (SVK) v (8)Alona Bondarenko (UKR)

Yeah thats what i was saying her style is perfect for clay and i think it will become her best surface she is such a terrific defensive type of a player that she can really run so many balls down as well as use her variety and then attack when she can. her training coach, Yuval Higer: "Shahar had a illness during the week, which in the end of it she breaks another record and gets to the singles and doubles finals. that girl is just a tiger, she artistically & smartly neutralizes the opponments attack and then counterpunch deadly"

From the wta report:

Next up for Groenefeld is No.4 seed Shahar Peer, who crushed No.7 seed Mara Santangelo, 61 62 on Thursday.
Similar to Myskina, Groenefeld goes up against one of the Tour's most promising rising stars on Friday. After breaking through to her first Tour semifinal earlier this season at Canberra, Peer has gone even further on two occasions, winning her first titles at Pattaya City and Prague. Friday will mark her fourth final four appearance of the year, and Groenefeld isn't taking the looming match lightly.

"I played her in Stanford last year and I had a tough win against her," said the German, who won that match, 75 61. "She's already won two titles this year, so she's obviously playing well and always improving. I'm excited to play her, and I'll do my best to stay aggressive, just like I was today."

from the wta semi final wrap:

There will be no showdown between the top two in the final, however, after No.4-seeded Shahar Peer shocked No.2 seed Anna-Lena Groenefeld, 60 62.

"She has a very good serve so my game plan was to neutralise that, make her move and stay aggressive," Peer stated after the match. "It is my second final in three weeks, so obviously I'm happy with the way I'm playing right now. It gives me a lot of confidence for Roland Garros."

Not only did Peer notch her first Top 20 victory with a win over the 15th-ranked German, she also reached her third and biggest Tour singles final, having won titles at Tier IV events in Pattaya City in February and Prague two weeks ago.

Myskina and Peer have played once previously, with the Russian prevailing 62 36 63 last year in the opening round of Amelia Island, which is held on green clay.

Yes, no question about it. But Shahar played Myskina tough the last time and Shahar's game has improved since then. No matter what happens tomorrow, Shahar is playing the best tennis of her career right now. To blow out Groenfeld like that, I don't even know what to say.

- Unbelievable win. This is really a step up for Shahar. Great fighting too. She could have folded it up after the 1st set but she wouldn't back down.

- Thanks for the photos and summary, ASAP.

- I hope she has learned from her last two tournament wins that she must get focused quickly on her 1st round match at RG.

- Did I hear correctly that Shahar earlier said that this is all because of the new boyfriend? Well, if so, I hope they get married!

Commentary: Peer changes Israel's sports atmosphere
By Charles Elmore
Palm Beach Post Staff Writer
Friday, June 02, 2006

PARIS — Seven months ago, Shahar Peer had never won a pro tennis tournament. She lived in a tent and wore leather boots.

Fast forward through three titles, a career-high No. 26 ranking and her second straight-sets win at the 2006 French Open.

And meet the hottest sports celebrity in Israel.

"We're not a big country, and we don't have a big sports culture," Peer, 19, said after winning Thursday. "This is a lot of fun. People really appreciate it and they give me warm words when I go out on the street."

She chose not to train in Europe or the United States, remaining in Israel despite the relatively small number of courts and training facilities. She took time from tennis practice to participate in mandatory military service, attending basic training in October. She has permission to travel around the world for tennis but works in an office for the army three to four hours a day when she is home.

Her stunning rise in the tennis world fascinates fans from Tel Aviv to West Palm Beach.

"We're very proud of Shahar," said Hannah Soltz-Aharony, a former swimmer in Israel's Olympic program who now directs the Israel Program Center at the Jewish Federation of Palm Beach County. "It's the lead story in a Jewish newspaper I'm looking at right now on the Internet. She's saying, 'I know I can beat anyone. I believe in myself.' "

In Israel, soccer reigns as the most popular sport, followed by basketball, Soltz-Aharony said.

"As a swimmer, no matter what we did, I remember the soccer players always got the attention," she said.

That's changing. Peer (pronounced PAY-er) has captivated the nation.

"If she wins now, she'll get a call from the prime minister," Soltz-Aharony said.

Peer still has a long way to go for that. But considering the way she is playing on this surface, it's not a stretch to peg her as Israel's greatest hope to produce the country's first Grand Slam champion.

Countrywoman Anna Smashnova — now there's a great name for tennis — achieved a ranking of No. 15 in 2003. Amos Mansdorf, who sometimes lends a hand at Peer's practices, ranked as high as No. 18 in 1987, and reached the round of 16 at the U.S. Open, the Australian Open and Wimbledon.

In the Istanbul Cup final just six days ago on clay, Peerupset top seed Anastasia Myskina, a French Open champion two years ago. On Wednesday at Roland Garros, she trounced Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 6-2, 6-3. Peer won 55 percent of the points on her opponent's serve.

Her next opponent likely will be No. 6 seed Elena Dementieva of Russia, who plays Ukraine's Viktoriya Kutuzova today.

An upset of Dementieva, a former finalist here, would anoint Peer as a dark-horse threat in a field without an overwhelming favorite. Defending champion Justine Henin-Hardenne struggled with 43 unforced errors and had to save three set points Thursday in a win over Anastasiya Yakimova.

Mansdorf's career illustrates some of the difficulties of being a tennis pro in Israel. He missed practice time for army service, too, and chose to stay away from competition during the first Gulf war.

"How will it look to the public if I go (play tennis) and Israelis are sitting in their gas masks?" he said.

Peer began playing at age 6 after watching her brother and sister take tennis lessons. She won the junior Australian Open title in 2004.

Many of the Russian players dominating tennis today trained in Spain or the United States, but Peer, the daughter of Dovik, a computer software specialist, and Aliza, wasn't interested in leaving her native country. Tennis facilities in Israel have improved in the last two decades, and she said she is happy with the coaching from Dedy Jacob.

"Always they ask me this, but I really like Israel and I love to be at home," Peer said. "For me it's really important to be with my friends and with my family. So I never wanted to leave Israel."

Peer has not played flawlessly this year. Her fastest serve was 10 mph slower than her opponent Thursday. And she stumbled recently in a first-round loss in Rome.

But she has lost just seven games in two wins here.

"I think the way I am playing now I have a lot of confidence, " Peer said. "Everything is going smooth."

And that's why on the meter of sports celebrity in Israel, Shahar has no peer.

French Open Notebook: Thursday
(AP)

http://www.tsn.ca/tennis/news_story/?ID=167593&hubname=tennis

PEER PRESSURE: When most tennis players take time off from the tour, they go home to relax. When Shahar Peer goes home to Israel, she swaps her life as a tennis player for one as a soldier.

Peer did her basic training during two weeks last October, living in a tent with 70 other recruits. According to Peer, the accuracy she's acquired playing tennis was a big help when it came to her marksmanship with a gun.

''We learn how to shoot and it was one of the best things I did there because it was a lot of fun,'' the 31st-seeded Peer said after reaching the third round at the French Open with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria.

''I think the tennis helped with my touch - I do a lot of things with the body, the feet the hand. I was one of the best.''

As an athlete, Peer can meet her military obligations by doing office work, but she still must log a required number of hours to fulfill her duty to the army over a two-year period.

When at home, she spends five hours a day in military service. It doesn't seem to have hurt Peer's tennis game: She's already won two titles this year.

Tennis / Peer's new coach shooting for Top 15
By Rami Hipsh

Shahar Peer rose yesterday to her highest ever WTA ranking at 24 in the world, but her new coach, Adam Peterson, is aiming a lot higher.

"Our goal is that wins over top 20 players will be a regular thing for Shahar," said Peterson, who recently replaced Peer's coach over the past six years, Oded Ya'akov. "We want her to feel like one of them, and make the jump to the top 15 players in the world.

"Peer has enormous potential," added Peterson, who coached former world number one Lindsay Davenport until last year. "Her serve is even more powerful than Davenport's, and is still learning."

Peer, who will compete at next week's Eastbourne Tournament, said she is settling down with her new coach.

"We are learning to work together," Peer said, adding she was surprised by her popularity following her success at the French Open.

"People stop me on the street," she said. "There isn't a person who doesn't recognize me, and I find that amazing. Even 50-year-old women stop me and say they saw me on television. I hope it continues like that. It will depend very much on what I achieve in the future."

I recall reading in one article that Shahar and her parents decided that she needed a full time coach who would essentially travel with her everywhere and be prepared to coach her every day. I don't think Jacob could commit to that.

That may just be a diplomatic explanation for something else, however.

Regarding an eventual subforum for Shahar, she will probably have one one day, but I don't know when. A request has been posted in the bugs/questions section (click here (http://www.wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=245815)), I invite you to bump it ;)
:wavey:

Thanks :yeah: I didn't understand the explanation you wrote, that I put in bold, (where is the list of all the blogs at the top of the page? I don't see it  ) but I entered the direct link :)

I don't see it  ) but I entered the direct link :)at the top of this page, on top of the title "WTAWorld", you have 5 lists called (from the left to the right):
- Men's tennis
- ATP Fan blogs
- Women's tennis
- WTA Fan blogs <-- check this one, you'll find the name of all the players who got a blog ;)
