Puting a simple QUESTION mark at the end of the sentence is a quicker remedy...most people on here will say the same thing... :wavey:

Azarenka thinks hard about it

30/12/2005 14:14:02

World junior tennis number one Victoria Azarenka may have gained direct entry to the ASB Classic, but the 16 year old had to think long and hard before accepting the offer.

Azarenka has been handed New Zealand's Marina Erakovic's wildcard, after she was forced to pulled out with a shoulder injury.

But Tournament Director Richard Palmer says Azarenka did not accept the offer straight away.

She says at her age she is only allowed four wildcards per year, so she had to consider whether it was a good idea to use one so early.

Richard Palmer says she decided that it was better to play, as it will help her improve her ranking and gain more direct entries into other tournaments.

It's one of the toughest qualifying draws ever at the ASB Classic with the highest ranked player Jelena Kostanic at 84 in the world and the cut-off for direct entrants at 190.

The calibre of the field makes the job of the four Kiwi wildcards difficult to say the least, but not impossible.

Fifteen-year-old Aucklander Sacha Jones has a ranking of 776 and has drawn Taiwanese player Su-wei Hsieh who is ranked at 138.

Shona Lee, 17 faces talented Luxembourg player Claudine Schaul who is currently at 172 but has been as high as 41 in the world.

Lee is at 706.

Unranked 16-year-old Kairangi Vano of Auckland is up against Japan's Ryoko Fuda who has a ranking of 163. Vano is second on court four from 10am.

Tracey O'Connor the most experience of the Kiwi quartet plays Austrian Yvonne Meusburger. O'Connor is listed at 626 while Meusburger is 135.

The last direct entrant is American Jessica Kirkland at 190 who plays third seed and 2002 ASB Classic finalist Tatiana Panova in the first round.

Another American Ashley Harkleroad the 2004 finalist at the ASB Classic plays talented Hungarian Agnes Szavay.

Second seed in the qualifying Severine Bremond of France plays 2000 Classic champion and former top-20 player Anne Kremer while Meilen Tu the 2001 champion plays fellow American Shanay Perry.

Qualifying starts at 10am on Saturday 31 and Sunday and is free to the public.
