2005 was a great year for Lindsay. She won six titles, was #1 for all but seven weeks, reached the final in all but two tournaments where she did not retire, reached two Slam finals, and finished the year at #1 for the second consecutive time, and fourth overall. The one thing she just could not capture this year was that fourth Slam title. Here is a look back at Lindsay's year, tournament by tournament.

Lindsay arrived in Sydney after pulling out of the Hopman Cup with a knee "injury". We were all very worried, but our fears were quickly put to rest when we saw Lindsay beaming like an angel here in Sydney, and disposing of top 20 player Nathalie Dechy in her first match. But, poor Lindsay came down with the flu, and we wouldn't see her again until the Australian Open.

What a result for Lindsay. Nearly five years after last reaching a slam final, Lindsay came into the Australian Open as the top seed, determined to improve her slam results. Her draw was not an easy one. In the first round, Lindsay disposed of former world number two Conchita Martinez 6-1 6-0. All seemed well, but in her second round match, Lindsay looked visibly upset during her sluggish 2-6 6-2 6-2 win over Michaela Pastikova. In the third round, Lindsay defeated rising newcomer Nicole Vaidisova 6-2 6-4, and in the Round of 16, Lindsay defeated the hard hitting Karolina Sprem 6-2 6-2. But in the QF, Lindsay played what was one of the most exciting matches of the tournament. She defeated the red-hot crowd favorite Alicia Molik 6-4 4-6 9-7, in a match that lasted over three hours. An exhausted Lindsay was so drained that she could not even jubilate after her victory. In the semifinals, Lindsay overcame poor form to defeat Nathalie Dechy, and reach her first slam final in nearly five years. In the final, Lindsay lost in three sets to Serena Williams.

In doubles, Lindsay reached the final with longtime friend Corina Morariu.

Another week, and another final for Lindsay. After winning her first three matches without dropping a set, including a straight sets win over U.S. Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, Lindsay nearly completed a remarkable comeback against Maria Sharapova, coming within two points of her third straight Tokyo title.
