BUT... Bryanne beat Regla at here last year in qualifying!

What a terrible draw!!!!! I am defending champion and I have to play either my doubles partner or the player who beat in the final at Hamburg. And the winner to play probably Ferrer or Masterton. GEEZ
Good Luck Bryanne!

Monica Gambill back on the tour in Warsaw
Monica Gambill is playing again this week after taking last week off to protest against the tournament in Hamburg with Madonika Diva Jahfson. This week its the same as she plays in Poland instead of a tier 1 in Germany.
'I have a lot of problems with the German judicial system.I wouldn't feel safe there, thats why i am supporting this tournament and hopefully i can win it to make my point clear that i will never play in Germany'
'I'm the second seed here which means i should get to the final its a lot of pressure but i hope i can come out on top and win my first singles tournament!'

Jane Wong arrives in Berlin
Following another early exit, the former clay court specialist is in crisis.
'Oh well, I guess you can say that, but you know even if I fall to 30 in the world and has too play qualifying day in day out, I will still play.' Asking about getting a bye on her draw, 'Well I hate byes haha, I mean I dunno who I am facing next Noventz are tough and Herrera beat me on clay this year before so you know I need to do some scouting out there.''I got a good draw, I mean the first quarter is filled with great players Tiffani, Bryanne, Regla and Larisa, I count myself lucky on that, but counting on my form, I wouldn't look that far into the draw haha.' Asking about her sister Mary who play challengers but have met no success so far, she lost all 3 of her opening match, 'Well, she is adapting, I believe she will have some success soon, but at least I know that she wouldn't be too upset, coz she is only 16 and you know after a year or two when her body and her game developed she will be ready and she know that. She is a much more confident girl than me, and you know she won 5 junior title already of course she knows it is a matter of time before she score some wins.'

Marteena hopes to get out of her slump on clay at the moment :( :( :(....
She has lost early her last two tournaments, after consistently reaching the quarters or semi's of her tournaments before that. She can't even explain it herself: "I don't know what's happening. I was feeling so confident after indian wells, miami and amelia island...i reached the quarters atleast at all three, and beat larisa for the first time. I was sooo happy. I think the pressure of fed cup got to me during the week of charleston. It was all i could think about, and then at hamburg i think i was still dissapointed about losing it for Australia. I feel like i let the country down, winning only 1 of my three matches :("
"I hope to do better here, but i have a tough draw with either Tanya or Riana in the first match. I just need to take it one step at a time and try some new things in my matches i think, just to see what works."
"I predict either larisa or tiffani to win the title actually. Larisa is just a great player, so consistent and has won soooo many titles. Tiffani has been playing sooo well lately, really dominating the field. Last week though, regla also played very well, so i think she has a great chance here aswell."
"I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens....."
May 6th, 2002, 03:32 AM
Alx, would you please inform me as to why Ms. Jennifer Selles is not in the draw. She commited in the may commitmanets thread! Jennifer is confused. Thanks!

DRUNK JAHFSON ARRIVES IN WARSAW
Madonika Diva Jahfson had to be escorted off her plane Sunday morning which was going from Cagnes, France to Warsaw, Poland. Jahfson was vulgar, abusive towards the flight attendants, and managed to get quite drunk before landing in Warsaw.
Jahfson demanded all other passengers in first class be "moved out of my fucking way." She drank two bottles of whiskey and a bottle of champagne while on the 2 hour flight.
"By the time we landed and were escorting passengers out of the plane, she had a whiskey bottle in her hand and was smacking the flight attendants with it."
One of the flight attendants had to be taken to a hospital after Jahfson fractured her skull with a whiskey bottle. Jahfson was immidiately taken by police and charged with a $50,000 fine which she refused to pay in cash, rather she said she would "give free blowjobs, and I do swallow."
She was charged an extra $10,000 for taking off her clothes and throwing herself at random pedestrians. Jahfson did manage to issue a statement late in the evening.
"I was just celebrating and having a good time over my win in France. I apologize to the flight attendant, I mistook her for Daniela T seeing as they were both optional shavers, ROTFLMAOO!!!"
Jahfson did manage to arrive at the tournament site in Warsaw, however the staff did not let her in due to the fact that she was only wearing a thong. Jahfson managed to jump the fence and go to the tournament office to set up a practice court time.
"This should be a fun week," Jahfson commented. "I hope I get to play Monica Gambill, I just think she is a fantastic HITTING partner, AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA."
May 6th, 2002, 11:59 AM
'Well Madonika i hope i get to play you too and kick your arse for the third time we play!':p 'I find it exceptionally funny you think your all that when i have played you twice and beat you in straight sets both time'!:p

Jennifer Selles fined $ 2000
Berlin- American tennis star Jennifer Selles was fined $ 2000 US dollars on Monday by the Marriott Hotel company. Selles, 18, checked out of the room which she spent 2 nights in on Monday morning. Hours later, the maid who was cleaning the room found a pornographic magazine laying on the bed. The magazine was brought to the manager of the hotel. The manager, irate at the situation, sent Jennifer a fine in the mail. "Hotel rules clearly state that no pornographic material may be brought into the hotel. We make lots of money on our Pay Per View pornos, she should have just ordered them intead," said Hotel Manager Gunther Kohlmann.
Selles was spotted later that day practicing for the Eurocard Ladies Open tournament held in Berlin this week. Selles said " It's an unfortunate situation. I accidentally forgot it on the bed. Plus I wasn't notified of the rule. It's a good thing I have plenty of money. There goes my Charleston check. It's too bad I forgot, because it was a good magazine." Kohlmann kept the magazine, which is speculated to be "Playboy."

Larissa Liashenko loses again!
The 2002 season started well for Belarusian Larissa Liashenko winning two titles in a month. But since March, the 17 year old from Minsk has struggled! ''I'm playing so bad right now! I'm losing to players I'm suppose to beat easily. I'm not motivated and I'm tired. I don't know where I'll go from here but it's heartbreaking playing like that when you know you are capable of a lot more'', said a dissapointed Liashenko following her 1st round loss to junior WC Rosie Ribbons. Liashenko who has wins over Sabine Graf, Ruflina Taliamanosoko, Selima Valentine, Eva Sorrenta and Jane Wong has lost 2 straight first round match to Adriana Gonzalez and now to Rosie Ribbons. A possible factor of Liashenko's recent lack of success is Elena, her mother, who is battleling lung cancer at the moment. Since learning about her mother's illeness, Liashenko is 3-6 after starting the year with a 20-6 record.
Liashenko's comment on her game at the moment
''I'm so dissapointed right now! I'm totally off. My game is falling apart. I'm seriously thinking about withdrawing from the French Open! I'm not going to get embarassed week after week with these very bad loss. I'm sorry but losing to a junior is a very bad loss even if she would have been the #1 junior. She played ok but If I would have been present on the court, I should have had beaten her convincingly. But that's not what happened.''
Liashenko's comment on Rosie Ribbons
''She is good but I'm extremelly embarassed to lose in straight sets! I really didn't like her attitude during the match. It was 7-6, 4-0 and she was arguing like crazy on multiple line calls and after the match, she started jumping everywhere like she would have won the whole tournament. There is nothing impressive about beating me right now! She didn't have to act like that!''
More news on the Liashenko's possible withdrawal from the French Open later during the week...
May 8th, 2002, 04:40 AM
Bad luck Bryanne! Worse luck for me. I have to play Regla again. Might lose second match in a row, first time since Feb:fiery:

May 8th, 2002, 04:43 AM
Please don't withdraw from the French Larissa....you are such a talent, and i'm sure this is just a mini-slump....
You are more than capable of competing against the best and winning, and you may only need to play through your slump to get out of it!

Ribbons reply's to Larissa
I dont mind what she said! I know she wasnt playing badly but I still think I played well!! Also I was happy because she's a very good player who's ranked very high at the moment! I'm obviously going to be exited! I didnt think I complained that much, but if she would have been a profesionnal she wouldnt have noticed! I dont think she should miss the French! She's a good player and maybe she should take a few days off this week!

The Polish contingent at Warsaw has shown their talent. Playing in the first FWTT tournament in Poland and their first professional or junior FWTT tournament in Poland, Gianna Adrianna Dulko and Katarina Krivencheva-Molik came out of the first round with well-deserved victories.
No. 3 ranked junior Katarina Krivencheva-Molik had the tough first round matchup against talented junior player Natalya Dhlopocova, her doubles partner and a semi-finalist at the Tier 1 pro event in Indian Wells. Kriventcheva-Molik recovered after losing the first set, to beat the talented Slovakian 4-6 6-4 6-4. "This is a good win for me. Natalya was a tough opponent to play, so I'm glad that I managed to win, especially since this tournie is in Poland. I hope I continue to play well and that Natalya and I do well in doubles. I can't wait till we go to Gianna's wedding, both of us are excited that we are maide-of honour and bridesmaide. :)"
Dulko, who just announced her plans to get married to 3-yr boyfriend Jan-Marc Dombrowski, played the late-entry Jennifer Seles, winning 7-5 7-5. "I was playing fairly well, but I squandered some leads. Jennifer just wouldn't give up and she kept fighting back. I'm just happy that I managed to win my first match in my homeland, and that I won in straight sets. I hope to continue to play well, and possibly advance far in this tournament. My wedding plans and announcement is giving me much joy and confidence when playing. I love you Jan-Marc. Btw, to all who have wished me congratulations, I appreciated it. I will see you all at the wedding!"

Anjelica de la Coutiere withdraws from Sarasota
Anjelica de la Courtiere, who had previously planned to play Strasbourg the week before Roland Garros today announced that she would not be making the trip.
"I just feel that I've been playing a lot of matches lately," said de la Courtiere. "Asking myself to play all these events and then the week prior to the most important slam to me, is asking too much."
Anjelica de la Courtiere had planned to play doubles in the event with Regla Torres earlier in the year.
"I apologize to Regla and to my fans in France. Hopefully they will come and support me during Roland Garros, and I hope that they understand why I will not play Strasbourg."
Anjelica de la Courtiere won her first round match in Berlin on Tuesday.

Anabel Conde-Martinez def. Sabine Graf 1-6 6-1 7-6(4) :o
Jane Wong said she is relieved to have won her first match for a while but she is counting nothing for her next match, 'looking at her strategy, I think am in a bit of trouble, but I will do my best and see how it goes.'

More info will follow soon

Tiffani is very disappointed with the match. The draw was too tough. Regla has her number. However, she will take the time off from singles to work on doubles and prepare for Rome.

Interview with Regla Torres
Regla Torres d. Bryanne Applegate 7-5 5-7 7-5
Regla Torres d. Tiffani Eggert 3-6 6-3 6-3
Q: Regla, through to another quarterfinal you must be pleased with your results.
A: Thank you, I have to say that I'm probably playing the best tennis of my life right now. Hopefully this is something I can continue on with.
Q: You had a pretty bad record against Bryanne, how was it to get one up against her?
A: Um yeah before this match I've only ever beaten her once and that was also on clay, she's tough on all the other surfaces, clay is her worst surface so that might have something to do with it.
Q: Today you beat Tiffani, whom you beat to win Hamburg last week, again coming back from a set down to win that must give you confidence.
A: Yeah definitely, Tiffani is one of the best players on the tour right now, she just reached a couple of finals so it's good to be able to come back and win matches against her. I think I've just been mentally tougher in both the matches.
Q: Next is Larisa Ferrer, looking forward to the match?
A: Well if I was ever going to beat her again it's going to be now (laughs). It was shock beating her in such a close match at the Sanex Champs. This year she's beaten me twice but we haven't played on clay of awhile so I'll see. I have nothing to lose and I'm feeling pretty good about myself right now, so definitely I think I have a chance.
Q: Anjelica de la Courtierre said she's withdrawn from Strasbough and has apologised for not playing doubles with you, but from our understanding you weren't playing in Strasbourg?
A: Yeah, there's been huge misunderstandings between us. I will talk to her about a time when we could play maybe later in the year, cause she's such a great doubles player and I would love to play with her. I have actualy decided to enter Madrid since representing Spain. This will be the first time I will play in the country so I'm looking forward to it.
May 9th, 2002, 01:40 PM
After defeating her doubles partner in teh first round, Katarina Krivencheva-Molik's winning streak stopped , as she lost 7-6 6-4 to no.1 seed Adriana Gonzalez. "This was a hard loss for me, as the match was so close. I was 6-5 up in the first set and 5-4 and 6-5 up in the tiebreaker, but Adriana made some stellar shots to take the first set away from me. Overall, I am happy with my result, I hoped I would fair better, as this tournament is in my homeland. I still have to play with Natalya in doubles, so we will see how that goes."
After breaking in the top 20 in doubles for the first time since December 2001, Gianna Adrianna Dulko was continuing her attempt to break in the top 20 singles, which is a tight race. "I had some really good singles results, but everyone else around my rank kept winning, so I didn't move up. In fact, I moved down. But I'm hoping to advance further in this tournament, one thing is that I'm glad I reached the semi-finals in my homeland. I hope Monica and I do well in doubles as well. :) My engagement has given me much encouragement and confidence, which was evident through my great play. I hope to continue to play well. Zerene was a very good player and gave it her all,so this match was a good test for me."

Injured Graf Cancels Berlin Doubles, Rome and Strasbourg
May 09, 2002
BERLIN, Germany (AP) - Sabine Graf has been forced to cancel her schedule in Italy and France because of a knee injury, her management office said today.
During her singles-loss in second round against Spain's Conde-Martinez, Graf had problems with her knee.
Graf, Wimbledon winner 2001, wanted to play her doubles together with young tennisplayer Diana Mahler, today on Centre Court.
The tournaments in Rome and Strasbourg planned for May also had to be called off because of Graf's injury.
She is disappointed but she hopes to comeback in Paris.

Anjelica de la Courtiere def. Brenda Van Haak 6-4 3-6 7-5
Anjelica is very pleased to take out yet another seeded player. She's glad that she's somewhat found her form on the dirt!
Q: You almost lost it there in the 2nd. Won a few crucial points and then took the third. How do you feel with your play?
A: Usually, I am such a quick starter, and I have never played Sophia before, so I was so surprised to see it. It was like 1/0, 2/0, 3/0, 4/0, then I started thinking about a bagel and thankfully I won a game. But then it was over and I was like, "Wow", you have got to change that. In the 2nd set, it was more even and like you said, a few crucial points went my way and I won the 2nd set. The third set, I felt in total control.
Q: She's a newer player, thoughts about her?
A: Well, she's definitely a quick starter, but she's going to have to learn to play out matches longer. I could tell she was a little tired in the third.
Q: You next play Eva Sorrenta. It's been a while.
A: Oh my, are you sure?
A: Haha! Well, we haven't played in a long time, in fact I don't think we've ever played on clay. It's going to be tough, but Eva is a great friend of mine and those are always the toughest matches. It will be nice to see an 'oldie' go to the semifinals.
Q: Excited about the French?
A: Not really, I have finalists points to defend (laughter). Actually I'm excited about this tournament. If I do well, I may take the #1 ranking which would be an absolute dream for me.
Q: Well good luck with it, in doubles, and the rest of singles.
A: Thanks! :)
May 9th, 2002, 07:33 PM
Sorrenta Survives Nailbiter
Q: Eva, congratulations on reaching the quarterfinals here, you must be relieved to have gotten through today?
A: Definitely, I was very close to losing and I'm really happy with the way I fought.
Q: How much did you know about Rosie coming into the match?
A: Not very much actually, she's a wildcard this week and I hadn't seen her play before so that was not easy, but I knew I'd have to play well because she beat Liashenko in the round before, so obviously she was playing well coming into the 2nd round.
Q: This is your first trip to the quarterfinals here in Berlin, what's held you back in the past?
A: I really enjoy playing in Germany, and I like clay aswell so it's nice to get the monkey off my back here (laughter). Really though, I've had some tough draws here in 2000 and 2001, losing to Selima and Ruflina in the 1st round the last 2 years and we all know how great of players they are.
Q: Speaking of Ruflina, she's your next opponent, what do you try and do against a player like her?
A: Well, we are friends and know eachother's game's fairly well I'd say. We both started out the year pretty poorly really, so it's nice to be getting into a bit better form since then. She's looking a lot more confident than before and obviously I expect a difficult match from the #2 player in the world.
Q: How confident do you feel leading up to Roland Garros?
A: I feel okay, I'm playing fairly decent at the moment, but I still need to get into top form aswell. I've had a couple of strong weeks this year, but I'm just working on keeping up my intensity through a whole match, mainly against the other top players, that's the key to stringing together the wins, so hopefully I will start to peak on time for the second slam of the year.
Q: Thanks Eva.

JAHFSON WINS 5TH MATCH IN A ROW OVER GAMBILL
Q: This is your 5th win in a row, you have quite a streak going.
M: I know, it really doesn't surprise me. I am such an incredible player, I knew it was bound to happen.
Q: Gambill, previous to the match had pointed to the fact that she had never lost to you...
M: Well she can shove that up her ass now!
Q: Gambill said after the match that she tanked.
M: LOLOL! Honey I would say the same thing after bragging about having a winning record against somebody that just kicked my ass. I took that bitch out like I said I would and the fans are greatful. I can't tell you how many fans came up to me and told me to take that whore out because they just can't stand the bitch.
Q: Do you think your winning streak will end any time soon?
M: Not really, I plan to go undefeated for the rest of my career.
Q: Nobody seems to be talking about you anymore...
M: They've learned to shut the fuck up when I play well because they know they'll be eating crow if I play them and kick their ass like Gambill just found out.

Courtside with Regla Torres after her upset win over Larisa Ferrer
Interviewer: Regla, congratulations on your win, this is only the 2nd time you've beaten Larisa, how tough was it?
Regla: OMG, it was tough out there. She beat me twice earlier this year so I was really determined not to lose again. I just had to really dig deep in the last two sets cause she came out firing.
Interviewer: Next you play Anabel Conde Martinez, your Fed Cup team mate, are you looking forward to that?
Regla: Well we've never played before. I usually have difficulty with players I've never played before, so hopefully I can do well, but I'm just ecstatic to have come so far in this tournament already. I'll give it my best.
Interviewer: Good luck on the next round Regla.
Regla: Thank you and I just wanted to say Congratulations to my good friend Anjelica on her upset win in the quarterfinals and wish her luck for the semis! :D

Regla Torres bt Larisa Ferrer 3/6 6/4 6/4
Q. Hello Larisa. Dissapointed after your lost?
A. Hello, yes dissapointed but is not that bad.
Q. What do you mean?
A. Regla is a very good player and had a very good week in Hamburg it was obvious she would want to beat me after her win over Tiffani and Bryanne.
Q. So how you feel you played?
A. I feeled good I didn't made to many errors and from the beggining to the end I tried my best Regla was simply better than me.
Q. You play today doubles.
A. Yes hopefully we can win our first round and then we will see what happens.
Q. We heard you will not play Rome is that true?
A. Yes it is I decided to take next week as a rest as I haven't done very well in Fed Cup, Hamburg and Berlin. I decided to play Strasbourg instead.
Q. How is your relationship with the other players in the tour?
A. Well I really do not know them all. I have a good relationship with Bryanne, Marteena, Gianna Adriana and I could say Tiffani also but after that I really don't know the others very well. There are also players that don't like me very much but I can't do anything for them to change their form of thinking about me.
Q. Good luck in doubles Larisa.
A. Thank you.
Q. Thank you for the interview.
A. A plessure as always.

Jane Wong contemplating retirement
Jane Wong is in a real slump, ever since she won Amelia Island she has been losing a lot of matches on her fav surface. She will be out of top 15 soon, but a very close relative of her reveal today that Jane Wong is considering landing a job as an accountant in Hong Kong
here is what the relative has to say. 'Well, Jane has been talking a lot about maybe settling down a bit, she has been travelling day in day out and you know, all those power players are starting to bother her in matches, I think she face reality these few weeks when she get her clocked clean by quite a few up and coming players and she no longer is a threat that she was last year.' In another interview her mother review. 'Jane has been studying a lot in open university and she now got a degree, she said that she will settle down soon and maybe landing a desk job which does not require so much travelling'
Jane Wong cannot be reached for comment at that point

Due to Larisa's withdrawal, marteena is without a doubles partner for rome....
Would Riana like to play doubles with marteena?

Tiffani Eggert comments:
"I understand the stress that my fellow players feel. We have all been playing a lot of tennis lately and I would very much like a week off to rest also. There just isn't time though. I think that the rest may be good for Larisa to regroup and Sabine to get better. But I definitely don't think Jane should retire. She won a tournament 3 weeks ago. Tier 1. And now she wants to retire after 2 early losses? That would be a terrible loss to the tour and I hope it isn't true."

Regla is very happy to be enjoying so much success on red clay as it is the surface she grew up on and she hopes to continue this in the rest of the season. She also wanted to congratulate Ruflina on becoming the new #1 on FWTT and for reaching the Berlin finals and for a great match.

Gianna Adrianna Dulko won her first tier-leve singles title today, with a 7-5 7-6(3) win over Madonika Diva Jahfson. And what better place to do it then at home, in Poland. Dulko won the singles title at Warsaw, and reached the finals in doubles, with stellar play. On route to her title win, she defeated Jennifer Seles, Zerene Fernandez and top 20 player Adriana Gonzalez. "I am so thrilled to have won this title. This is a great win for me, and its great that my first WTA win was in Poland. I really played well this week, and I am so thrilled and shocked to have won the tournament! I am overwhelmed! My engagement to Jan-Marc really gave me confidence, so I want to thank him. I also want to thank my fans, my family and my coach. I am so happy that Regla won her title as well in Berlin. I hope to carry this great play into Rome and Sopot! :D I wanna get closer to a top 20 rank in singles, as I fell this week to 26. HOwever, I am happy to be back in the top 20 in doubles. I am so happy and overjoyed by this win. Congrats to Madonika for a great effort."
May 12th, 2002, 04:14 AM
Congrats Gianna! :D
Let's do well in doubles next week ;)

JAHFSON DELIGHTED WITH HER WEEK
Q: Are you at all dissapointed with your loss in the final today?
M: No, why should I be. I was on a 6 match winning streak, that's not a very common thing in FWTT. I'm very proud of my effort the last 2 weeks.
Q: There are rumors you might not play Wimbledon even though you have committed to it.
M: I might not, yes.
Q: You aren't playing any grass court tournaments in preparation, is that maybe a sign that you won't be.
M: We'll see. It's not a very important tournament for me.
Q: Do you plan to play Fed Cup?
M: I've said this before, I will only play it on my grounds. Ruflina and I will have to talk.
Q: What are you doing during your time off before Wimbledon.
M: I plan to take some gun-shooting classes that might come in handy next time I see Daniela T.
May 12th, 2002, 10:26 AM
Well Done Gianna:D

Eva Sorrenta comments on runner-up finish in Berlin doubles:
"Congratulations to Gisele and Tanya, they are a good team, and we knew they'd be tough for us to beat, especially after a great string of wins to get to the final. They are nice girls, and we enjoyed playing such a competitive match."
