AO Wildcard PlayOff
Jelena passes first test

http://tinypic.com/inr5f5.gif

December 16, Melbourne Park - Former world No.4 Jelena Dokic passed her first test at Melbourne Park today after defeating Victorian Beti Sekulovski in the Australian Open Wildcard Play-Off 6-2 7-6 (6).

The 22-year-old won a comfortable first set and after breaking serve in the second looked set for an easy win. But world No. 344 Sekulovski refused to give in breaking back and eventually sending the set to a tiebreaker.

Dokic, ranked No.349 in the world, got the early break in the tiebreak and at 6-5 had her second match point opportunity but failed to convert. An impressive running forehand set up her third match point, which she delivered on for a 6-2 7-6(6) victory.

Dokic said she was happy with the way she played.

"It was good," said Dokic. "I was a little bit nervous, I havenít played matches in a very long time.

"There is some things I could improve on but I expected not to play too well in the first match but I played better than I expected."

Dokic said she was looking forward to the rest of the play-off. She will play Queenslander Shayna McDowell in the quarterfinals.

"I feel good. I think match play will help because we have because we have three or four days in a row. The more I practice and the more I play matches hopefully the better Iíll get."

Trudi :) Her biggest win since that major injury in March of '04! Sad for Lauren though, particularly since this won't help her case for a Main Draw WC.

I think Jelena will beat Shayna though. Shayna reached the finals of a 50K in February but hasn't done shit since then, compiling a losing record in the JUNIORS since then and getting owned at the two other pro events she has played in Australia since September.

With Lauren out, I actually like Jelena's chances a lot now...

I just back from the playoffs and I was very impressed with Jelena. She was hitting very flat and hard and going for her shots. I don't think that Beti was playing her best, but Jelena was just too good.

Wow great news! How was she moving though. I know this is something that dropped in her game in the last couple years. Did she look in shape and slim? and how was she to stretch for the serves? did she bring back big ones?

She seemed to be moving very well, chasing after lots of balls and running to dropshots. Those 3/4 pants didn't do her any favours though.

IMO she looked in good shape, and she was returning very well, putting lots of pressure on Beti on her serve.

Her serve was alrite. She served alot of doubles, got broken alot in the second. She returned quite well. She played two top winners at 6-6 in the tiebreak!! No clothing contract she was dressed very casual rather than tennis attire. She was really happy with the CD.

I'm sure that the Aus Tennis Team are watching all the matches, If Beti, like someone said was playing better than most of the other girls, they will definately take into consideration that she drew Dokic firstup and therefore didn't get to play more than one match.

IMO she looked in good shape, and she was returning very well, putting lots of pressure on Beti on her serve.

I thought her movement was bad, even for her. Yes she chased all the drop shots, but didnt look like getting to any of them. Her fitness seemed to be a bit lacking too, would have been interesting to see what would happen if it had gone to a 3rd.
She won the match because she had too much power for Beti, she easily hit the hardest out of any girl there. Also, Beti didnt play her best. I dont see Shayna being a problem for Dokic next.

How is her serve? That was a weakness when she played, so how is it now? Is it still the abbreviated motion that she changed to, or does she have a different motion? Is she still double faulting a lot too?

Dokic on Track for Australian Open Wildcard

December 17, 2005 - 2:54PM

Jelena Dokic has moved another step closer towards earning a wildcard into next month's Australian Open.

Dokic defeated Queenslander Shayna McDowell 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 at Melbourne Park to move into the semi-finals of the play-off tournament.

It is only her second match in Australia in four years after arriving back in the country two weeks ago.

Dokic beat Victorian Beti Sekulovski, also in straight sets, in her first round match.

She now plays 28-year-old Newcastle left-hander Trudi Musgrave for a place in Monday's finals.

Even if Dokic loses in the play-off event, she is virtually assured of gaining a wildcard into the Australian Open main draw.

Dokic has this week resumed working with former coach Lesley Bowrey, a former Australian Red Cup captain.

Bowrey said she had agreed to work with Dokic as coach over the Australian summer period and may even travel with her as part-time mentor.

"I'm planning to work with her during the Australian season and we're just taking it one step at a time and seeing how it goes," Bowrey said.

Bowrey has been on hand at her games and has been impressed with her form after not playing a match since August.

"It's all very well hitting the ball and things like that ... she's hitting the ball very well and she just needs to find a few more subtleties in her game that she had before and that will give her a lot of confidence," she said.

Bowrey remains confident that the former World No.4 can climb back into the top 10 with work.

"It's going to take a little time, but definitely yes, she's a great player and she's got a great determination so she can get back to where she was before," she said.

"She needs to work at a few things but if she has the right influences around her there's no reason why she can't get back."

Okay. The first set was very very tight. The first few games both girls were hitting really hard and clean. It was great to watch. There were lots of breaks of serve in the first set and Shayna served for the set at one stage. Jelena then upped her game in the second set and really dominated.

She was wearing the same pants as yesterday but changed her top. It was hot pink :hearts: .

Dokic revival on course for Open
By JACKIE EPSTEIN
18dec05

http://tinypic.com/ip4b53.jpg

JELENA Dokic's bid for an Australian Open wildcard is alive after she posted another win in the playoffs at Melbourne Park yesterday.
But the hopes of big improver and Davis Cup hitting partner Peter Luczak were dashed after he lost 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 to Joe Sirianni, of Essendon.

Luczak joins another surprise loser, Todd Reid, on the sidelines in January.

Dokic's campaign remained on track after overcoming a bout of early nerves to account comfortably for Queenslander Shayna McDowell 7-6, 6-1.

She progressed to today's semi-finals and a match against Trudi Musgrave. Watched by her boyfriend, several friends and coach Lesley Bowrey, Dokic looked sharp but still casual, dressed in black three-quarter length track pants and a pink sleeveless top.

"I had a tough first set and I was still a little bit nervous, but I think it was an improvement on yesterday," the former world No.4 said.

"Especially in the second set, it was getting better. It's getting to where I want to play and I'm focused. It was tough and I'm happy the way I handled it."

Dokic said it was difficult recovering from a match, having spent so much time out of the game. Yesterday was only her second match in Australia since January 2001.

"It's just a matter of how I'm going to pull up, but physically I feel fine," she said.

"I'm going to need some more matches and tournaments to get used to that again, but I've worked hard the last two or three months."

Bowrey, who first worked with Dokic in 1997 when she oversaw her successful Fed Cup debut, said the signs were positive for the summer ahead, which includes tournaments in Auckland and Canberra.

"She's feeling her way and there are signs there, but it's just not automatic," Bowrey said.

"The ability's there. She's always had that ability to hit a winner and she's a great competitor. They're two very good ingredients to become a top player.

"I'm hoping that I'll stick by her until the end of the Australian Open and maybe she'll be in the top 100 by the end of that."

In other results, Andrew Coehlo, Luke Bourgeois and Marc Kimmich advanced.

In the women's, Cindy Watson and Monique Adamczak joined Dokic and Musgrave.

The two finals will be played tomorrow.

Well, I never understood why her serve wasn't better. Her toss is problematic as it wonders and is usually behind her back. I always felt that she was too stiff on the serve and not smooth enough. If anything in this comeback I hope she adds a spin serve, because then at least she won't be double faulting a ton or giving her opponent the same serve everytime.

Her serve did used to be better. I remember when she beat Martina in 99 she was serving really well.
I'm not sure what happened but she slackened off and her serve became a problem around 01,02.
Lesley who worked with her in Juniors, I'm sure, will do something about it.
I think she is just letting Jelena play through these playoff's first before drastically changing her game, there would be nothing worse for Jelena than trying a new serve in important matches like these.

I'm sure in the weeks until Aukland (Jelena's first tournament) Lesley will help Jelena on her serve. At least I hope so.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It just shows Jelena's talent to quickly turn around and practice a bit and then play this wild card tournament. Hopefully she comes back strong and get back into the top 20 by year end. She def has the game and it would be nice to have her mix it up and knock off some of these Russians.

I feel like if she is hitting well, then confidence will come
the serve will be a problem, but it has always been there
if she wants to win a slam, it'll need to improve but for now she needs the mental preparation and match play
it seems like she has a good range on her groundstrokes and her returns, which is the best u can ask of her

Exactly! It's bizarre how her serve got so much worse. In that famous match where she took out Martina, both her first and second serve were really impressive. So it's GOT to still be in that head of hers somewhere -- ready to come out and go to work -- right??? (please say yes) ;)

It's great to see that her scores are getting better and that she's winning with much more dominance I guess. Is the final tomorrow? and how are her chances against her opponent?

If it's Adamczak - could be tricky based on past experiences. These two were great friends in their junior days, Monique was probably one of Jelena's best friends in Australia so they know eachother's games well....but I can't imagine Monique would pose much of a threat to Jelena now. She can match her for power, but not for precision.

If it's Watson - Cindy's consistent backcourt game could cause Jelena some issues, but overall Jelena should have way too much firepower for her.
