Amanda Janes, the daughter of former Wimbledon finalist Christine Truman and who spent some time this season as the second-ranked British woman, formally announced her retirement yesterday. Janes disclosed that her departure from tennis was in part caused by "the stress" of borrowing thousands of pounds from her mother to help fund her career.

The 27-year-old has had a lifetime of being introduced as the daughter of Truman, the darling of the Fifties and the Sixties with the innocent air and the murderous forehand, the former French Open champion who also might have won a Wimbledon title had she not slipped on the rain-greased Centre Court grass in the all-English 1961 final against Angela Mortimer. During Janes' time on the tour, her mother was a free coach, a personal banker and a source of gentle, much-needed encouragement.

Janes has had a reasonable career in her own right, with the left-hander coming close to breaking into the world's top 200 players this year. And there was the genuine possibility at the start of the season that they would become the first mother and daughter to both be ranked as the British No 1. But that was not to be, and with her lack of progress on the ranking computer, Janes became increasingly worried about her debts.

At the time of her final competitive match, her opening-round defeat at Wimbledon last summer, she owed her mother around 8,000. "It wasn't a nice thought that I was 27 and having to rely on money from my mother. I didn't want to be dependent on my parents. That put even more stress and pressure on me. The Wimbledon wild card helped pay off my debts, but that's not what it should be like, thinking about the money rather than simply concentrating on winning matches. That was no fun," Janes said.

Janes calculated that towards the end of her career a year's worth of flights, hotel rooms, general living expenses and fees for hitting-partners amounted to more than 40,000, and the figure would have been far higher if her mother had not provided free coaching. "I used up all my life savings on my tennis career," said Janes, who also borrowed some money from her father and her husband-to-be to invest in her tennis. She also received a small annual sum from the Lawn Tennis Association.

Janes, who was married in July and held the reception at the All England Club, is now working at a boarding school where she is teaching English to the sixth form. "I feel like I have a lot more money as a teacher than I did as a tennis player. I actually have some regular cash coming through each month.

''I was certainly never going to be destitute during my tennis career, as I could always borrow more money from my parents and my husband, but I reached the point where I didn't want to play any more," she said.

Amanda:) Is this the start of a comeback or just playing a few events so she can get into wimbledon?

Mar 21st, 2006, 06:43 AM
Amanda has withdrawn from Amiens and Bath

She's still on the entry list for Bath II though  Perhaps she feels she isn't playing at a high enough level after her time out?

Apr 9th, 2006, 03:26 PM
Well done winning Bath in your Easter Break Amanda :bounce:

Apr 9th, 2006, 04:11 PM
Great week Amanda! :D

Apr 9th, 2006, 08:14 PM

May 13th, 2006, 06:38 PM
Great week for Mandy shame she lost the final but 2 more weeks like this and she should be looking good for the grass season.

May 18th, 2006, 09:00 PM
Amanda lost her 1/4 final today

Oct 1st, 2006, 09:10 PM
Shes should break into the top 300 now around 285ish. A few more decent results and she should end the year top 250. Amazing comeback and hopefully in 2007 she can finally fulfill her grass potential and get a win at wimbledon and break the top 200 at least.

Nov 2nd, 2006, 07:59 PM
Amanda has a nice shooting at doing well in Minsk She is already in quarters and now plays Anna Lapushchenkova I think she can do really well here ;)

Nov 2nd, 2006, 08:14 PM
It's been a really impressive comeback from Amanda. Closing out a few more matches, and a big grass court season next year and she could really move up far.

Nov 2nd, 2006, 08:39 PM
Amanda :yeah:

Nov 2nd, 2006, 08:41 PM
Amanda can even make Aussie Open cut off if she does really well and the last part of the season :) And she got nothing to defend

Nov 27th, 2006, 05:04 PM
she just qualified in milan :woohoo:

and her record in career singles is now positive :D

Nov 28th, 2006, 02:37 PM

Great that Amanda going for it though - bit by bit she is coming up the rankings - soon high enough to get into the quallies for the Grand Slams.....

Feb 26th, 2007, 09:28 PM
If she gets some good results she could get into Roland Garros qualies :) Wimbledon wildcard prospects are good and the US Open always has a bigger qualifying field. Shame she didn't play Australia

Feb 27th, 2007, 12:10 AM
Her first big points come off in May so if she could crack the top 200 before then would be great. If she can have a decent grass court season top 200 should be safe.

Feb 27th, 2007, 10:44 AM
True...it's the grass court season that will be the real test for all the GB girls.

Mar 1st, 2007, 11:29 AM
Amanda will be seeded to make the SF's at the $25k in Belarus next week. Should she make the semi's, she'd break the top 200!! (at # 200 ;) )
Fingers crossed she'll do well....
Financially, this would be a breakthrough. She'd be into the French Open qualies. Nice to see her win over $2500 for winning her qualie match in Doha this week.....
Smart scheduling would be seeing her travel costs being kept to a near minimum too.

Mar 2nd, 2007, 01:04 PM
Hopefully she can make the top 200 before her bigger points start coming off of she can match them:)

Mar 4th, 2007, 03:46 PM
Amanda's Schedule

* 25,000 Minsk (Carpet)
* 25,000 Las Palmas De Gran Canaria, Qualies (Hard)
* 25,000 Tenerife, Qualies (Hard),

Here's a recent article I found about Amanda & the struggles of being on tour (just in case anyone's interested).....

Mar 7th, 2007, 10:44 PM
3/222-Keen d. 298-Anna Lapushchenkova (RUS) - 7-6(5),6-2 :bounce:

Next Up: 325-Olga Panova (RUS).........

Mar 8th, 2007, 06:51 PM
3/222-Amanda Keen (GBR) d. 325-Olga Panova (RUS) 7-5,7-6(2):worship:

Mar 8th, 2007, 07:49 PM
Great, we could have 4 ladies in the top 200, 5 if baltacha gets back in for

Mar 9th, 2007, 03:11 PM
3/222-Amanda d. 8/239-Alisa Kleybanova (RUS) - 5-7,6-3,6-2 :worship:

Semi Final's:
Amanda vs 253-Olga Govortsova (1st career meeting)......
The 18 year Belarussian has improved her ranking from 334 years end to 253 already. Will be a tough one, but fingers crossed.

Just for reaching the SF's here, Amanda will improve her ranking from 222 to about 208. Previous career best was 214 (in 2004)!! :bounce:

Mar 9th, 2007, 09:13 PM
Amanda, can amanda make top 200, if she wins this 25k also Govortsova is very dangerous made St Paul $50,000 Final this year :( Good Luck Manda

Mar 9th, 2007, 11:10 PM
Keep it up Amanda.

Don't forget Sarah Borwell shes on the verge of the top 200 aswell with very little to defend untill end of may.

Mar 10th, 2007, 07:57 PM
Govortsova d. Keen - 6-3,7-5........
Still a great week Amanda!! :)

Mar 12th, 2007, 08:58 PM
4/147-Elise Tamaela (NED) vs SE/222-Amanda........

Head 2 Head:

741-E. TAMAELA d. 623-KEEN - 6-4,6-4

2004 BORDEAUX CLAY (O) Q- R32:
4/186-TAMAELA D. 247-KEEN - 2-6,6-3,6-2

1/144-TAMAELA d. 232-KEEN - 6-2,6-1

Mar 14th, 2007, 09:35 PM
4-Elise Tamaela (NED) d. SE-Amanda Keen - 6-2,6-7(3),6-4.......
Great effort Amanda. Much better than the 3 previous attempts against Tamaela, especially the 6-2,6-1 effort this year. Crap draw, but shows Amanda's in great form still......:)

Mar 28th, 2007, 06:33 AM
352-Lenka TVAROSKOVA (SVK) d. 4/207-KEEN (GBR) 6-4,6-0.......:tape:

Mar 28th, 2007, 08:05 AM

Mar 29th, 2007, 02:32 AM
Keen/Keothavong (GBR) d. 4-Levchenko/Ozga (UKR/GER) 6-4,6-7(4),6-3 :)

The dub's match was the day before her shocking singles result. They then lost their QF on a w/o. Maybe she's injured?!
This was the 1st dub's win for Amanda since May 2005 & 1st since her comeback. She just needs to play 1 more dub's tournie to earn her dub's ranking back.......

Mar 29th, 2007, 06:37 PM

Mar 29th, 2007, 10:03 PM
I hope she isnt injured she has a alot of points to defend coming up.

Apr 1st, 2007, 10:26 AM
If Amanda wins a couple of matches next week shell be top 200 :)

Apr 4th, 2007, 05:02 AM
Singles 1r:
Q/260-Julia Georges (GER) d. 8/212-Keen - 2-6,6-3,6-1

She's not playing dub's this week, despite several vacant spots on the draw. She must be carrying some kind of injury, which would explain the bad end of the match........

Apr 6th, 2007, 09:37 PM
Mandy:sad: Thought she could win this one, well lets just hope for the best in the clay season, can't see her doing much but then its grass and its Amandas time to shine.

May 6th, 2007, 10:12 PM

Does anyone know what's happening with Mandy? She withdrew from Wimbledon qualies

Is this the end for her?:sad:

Jun 17th, 2007, 06:27 PM
She had some kind of chest infection during Birmingham so maybe thats forced her out. This could be the end for Amanda. I hope she stays around for another year but we will have to wait and see.

Jun 30th, 2007, 01:04 AM
Amanda is pregnant....so this may be it for her.

Jun 30th, 2007, 01:15 PM
