great news! i was worried because i thought she mentioned she might not play a warmup before the Aussie, but i think this is great. its a very tough field this year though, hopfully Tati starts the season well.

She should have played in Auckland, weakest field and almost the same pts to win now that there's no bonus pts.

Lol. That was what I thought too. However, she only has one tournament left before OZ Open. So I guess it's good to face a few good players. And I guess she's kinda done playing lower tiers after the Asia tour. It didn't do any good when she played Zurich and Linz :p

Allez Tania :hearts:

" semifinalist and crowd favourite at last year’s event was 17-year-old Tatiana Golovin, who returns as world No. 24." gold coast website

I like this description :)
Great tournament IMO to begin 2006, with a pretty good field of players but not impossible to win.
This seems a good programm: playing in Gold Coast for a week to be back on the track for AO, resting before AO (please Tati don't play in Sydney!) and then AO, in form to kick butt! :D

Yes! Here's the excerpt:

She is reluctant to set goals or make any bold statements in case her comeback campaign is derailed, although she still believes she can add to her five grand slams.

"You have to believe that down deep otherwise I wouldn't come back," said Hingis, who has practised this week with compatriot and Gold Coast defending champion Patty Schnyder and Frenchwoman Tatiana Golovin.

Golovin ready for a blast with Hingis

January 1, 2006
With her tanned skin, good looks and million dollar smile, teenage tennis prodigy Tatiana Golovin fits in perfectly on the glistening beaches of the Gold Coast.

The Russian-born Frenchwoman plans to have fun on the tourist strip but she also means business as fifth seed in the Australian Women's Hardcourts tennis tournament at Royal Pines Resort.

Golovin, 17, will partner Swiss superstar Martina Hingis in the doubles and takes on Australia's Nicole Pratt in singles on Monday.

Hingis, on the comeback trail to professional tennis following a three year break due to recurring foot injuries, approached Golovin on Friday and asked whether she wanted to play doubles with her.

"She said 'do you want to play' and I said 'of course'," Golovin said following a photo shoot on the sands of Broadbeach.

"Who doesn't want to play with Martina?

"I just feel very lucky. We're all very happy to have her back.

"For me to be playing doubles with her, I'm sure I'm going to learn a lot and we're just going to have a blast out there."

Hingis, 25, is one of the most successful doubles players in history, claiming nine grand slam titles, including four Australian Opens.

She is one of only four women to win all four doubles majors in one year following a golden run in 1998.

All the attention for this tournament is focused squarely on Hingis's comeback but Golovin is a marketer's dream - young, attractive and easy-going.

The Miami-based teenager insists she doesn't want to be the new Maria Sharapova - who withdrew from this event due to a shoulder injury - but she may not be far behind if her talent backs up her marketability.

Asked about the "glamour girl" tag, Golovin said: "I try not to think about it. I try not to read that much. I know who I am.

"What's most important is what my friends and the people that I care about think of me.

"All the rest, as long as it comes out in a positive image and helps others then I think it's all good."

Golovin, coached by Andy Roddick's former mentor Tarik Benhabiles, won the 2004 French Open mixed doubles title with compatriot Richard Gasquet.

She made the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2004 as a 16-year-old, the same age when Hingis was the youngest person to be crowned world No.1.

"My birthday is January 25th so hopefully I'll still be playing (in the Australian Open) when I'm 18," she said.

The tournament's sponsors, officials and tennis fans are probably thinking the same thing.

That sucks. I didn't expect her to win, because Flavia is that kind of player that Tati have trouble with and beside, Tati's always inconsistent.

Too bad there's no match report to see how's Tati playing with the new coach. However, it's too early to decide whether she's improved with the new coach on the very first tournament. Give her time. So all the luck in the double against Black/Stubbs.

im a little pissed that Tati lost her singles match, but she has had a good week to prepare for the Aussie. 2 wins in singles, plus a tough 3 set loss. and she has had 2 wins in doubles and could go to the final.

i really hope Tati and Martina can make the doubles final, i really hate Stubbs.

I'll blame this loss to it being so early in the season but if Tati is not able to beat players like Pennetta regularly in the spring then I'll be worried.

Win the doubles title Tati!

i found some doubles matche reports from hingis.org!

Hingis said she enjoyed teaming with the powerfully built 17-year-old and would consider a more permanent partnership should they continue winning.

"I have always enjoyed having partners who really hit the ball and Tatiana certainly does that," Hingis said after the match.

(Is Tati powerfully built? i thought that was funny)

first match:

Bit of a run-down on the doubles:
Well martina was certainly a lot more relaxed today, as seen in her play and emotion (great to have that smile back). Whilst the crowd was no where near as packed as yesterday, martina and golovin received a great introduction and support throughout.

To the match and a part from the odd errors, weak serving and good play by opponents to break martina's first service game and golovin's first in the 2nd set, martina and golovin had the match won without too much concern. good crisp and powerful volleys and reactions at the net by both players especially in the first set where it seemed martina could do not much wrong at the net with volley winners left, right and centre, made for an easy 6-1. the second set was a bit tougher with more duece games, not because their opponents got better, but because martina/golovin went a little off the boil. martinas overheads and drop shot winners were fantastic and along with a couple of great passing shots by golovin from the back of the court, got things back on track and to the lead. martina served out the match, which was good to see cuz she played the better of the two.

serving - martina's second serve unfortunately looked a bit weak at times and even though it wasn't taken advantage of, it resulted in her placing more emphasis on getting the first serve in with less speed, and this worked.

although martina and golovin (especially golovin) tended to stay back when it was their turn to receive/serve, when they were both at the net they were a force to be reckoned with.

nevertheless, great and easy win with some really good exchanges, a fantastic display by martina - who said she ever left the game!!!

Keep up the good play martina / golovin

hingis.org is a message board too, i dont go there, just looking for Tati info. these are from hingis fans too, so lets keep thier bias in mind too.

second match:

martina didn't looked tired what-so-ever from her long 3 set match earlier, she looked fresh, relaxed, confident and on the ball, menacing at the net with great intercept volleys and reactions.

what was good to see was martina serve/volleying, and great 1-2 punches from Golovins serving on quite a few occasions. golovin was also on-song with some scorching returns down the line, whilst martina came up with 2 great defensive lob winners over the heads of their opponents, to name a few of the notables.

laughter brewed within the crowd when martina ducked for cover under the net off a well-hit forehand by vinci. but that didn't stop the girls taking the final game of the set and match 6-3 6-4.

all in all a good match, good serving/returning and volleying.

another:
Yep, thought she played really well in the doubles, was a cut above all the other players out there tonight. Didn't think Golovin played all that well, it was Martina who won the points when it counted.

Martina showed her silky skills and smarts tonight, with perfect lobs, and some lightning volleys. You could see Golovin was enjoying playing with Hingis, and Martina seemed to be giving her quite a bit of guidance on positioning, and in particular her serves.

I've been to hingis.org, and those reports are pretty good, but I hate how some people over that act like Hingis is a god and Tati is dead weight

Well it sucks that Martina had to withdraw. But here's hoping they are playing together @ AO. Any news on that yet?

Well let's face it. Marti is just way too good @ doubles and Tati will eventually learn a thing or two.

That's sad :( but yeah hoping that Martina will be in good enough shape to play both singles, and doubles with Tati in Melbourne.
