Great to see her get a pretty comfortable win against a tricky opponent.

On grass she should take down Kerber, then the qualifying match should be easier. Don't want to get ahead of myself but things are looking good. I would like to see Naomi play US open quallies this year. She would need to qualify here at least to do that.

That was painful score board viewing :sobbing: Seemed in complete control up until 6-0, 2-0, then it came more competitive. Impressive finish to the match though. Now qualify :yeah:

*sigh* Naomi lost 5-7, 2-6 to Manasieva  I wasn't following the match closely, but I saw that she had her chances in the first and at the beginning of the second and didn't capitalise. Still a good run for her though, 50 juicy ranking points should put her up to around 250 again - onwards and upwards from here I suppose.

Retire from life naomi, had BPs in about 6 games and the other ones she had 0-30 or 15-30. I hope shes pissed off right now, coz she should be. Too inconsistent. I knew this would happen.

On the bbc it says she might get lucky loser spot, does anyone know if this is true because I thought it was between the 4 highest ranked losers. And also does anyone know how many lucky loser spots are available.

shame about the defeat.

how does it work with lucky loosers, would naomi have a chnace of that, is there any players likely to pull out through injury.

For Grand Slams, I think they do a 'lucky dip' for lucky losers, so all the girls who lost in the final round are put into a hat and then pulled out in order of going into the MD as a lucky loser.
Really gutted for Naomi, made a slow start and then really got into it, but just couldn't convert on the break points and Manasieva always ended up winning the tight games

At the French they took the top 4 highest ranked players who lost in the final round. We were following it closely because Katie and Bally were among that top four.

Maybe Wimbledon uses a different rule though.

Yeh, I think its done diff at Wimb due to tradition, as several articles have stated that Naomi must now wait and hope for a LL spot, which could just be bad research, who knows.

Seeded :) Yay. A QF would be nice, she isnt too far off the top 200, I want to see her climbing again! I think she has a few events schedule in the next few weeks, and I hope she can do some damage in US qualies! She is so talented that she shouldnt be down in 25ks atm but its good she is commiting. Its a fairly weak 25k and her draw is ok, so good luck :D

Has she made cut for US open qualies then

No she hasn't. The deadline for quales is next week and even if Naomi wins this title, her points won't be added until the following week. The cut off is normally around 220 at first, then it depends on withdrawals. I'd say she's about 30 on the ALT list at the minute.

:crying2:

My theory is that they gave her a QWC into the USO Qualies to return the favour to the UK after glatch was given a WC into wimbledon. Not one of the official agreements, but that wold be great. I don't know why sh would go there praying to get an ALT spot when there would still be numerous players ranked above her. And also, it would explain why she has only played 2 tournaments since wimbledon when she clearly stated that she wanted make the cut for the USO qualies. Maybe she already knew that she had a WC so focused on training p for it. Cuz she's been in florida and probably in the bolletieri academy and that is also good at getting it's players WCs into US tournaments (MLDB) But anyway, we'll see. :rolls:

She didn't get a QWC. :o They gave the British one to Laura. :weirdo::weirdo: Who has just been playing and losing in all these crappy clay court MM tournies in the 2QR this year.

And no, she would have been able to play both, but if she got far, she would have either had to tank/hope that she loses or just play on and skip the USO.

Well in the men's qualifying draw there have been some pretty low ranked guys get in, so maybe Naomi was hoping something similar would happen in the women's. Wasn't the qual cut off for the Aussie Open a couple of years ago somewhere in the 300's?

serenus_2k8
Aug 25th, 2009, 09:08 PM
Yeah the mens cut off is often lower than the womens though, she should have known that. Lets hope she gets herself signed in to some events and earns some points. Any idea where she will be next?

Joe.
Aug 26th, 2009, 09:11 AM
i think the mens draw is bigger:)

Europe rocks
Aug 26th, 2009, 07:03 PM
No, the US Open qualifying draw is the same for the men and the women - 128 draw with 16 qualifiers. Aussie Open, French Open and Wimbledon have a 96 draw with 12 qualifiers for the women ;)

Monica_Rules

In other news, she lost to Karatancheva in Birmingham today 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (4) :(

She should take a leaf out of Baltacha's book, who always looked a little stocky, but looks like she's trimmed down dramatically and is getting great results on court.

I know Bally had a lot of other physical and medical issues to deal with.

I couldn't agree more. The spare tyre she carried around for years seemed to hold her back from ever reaching top 100 (as well as all the injuries, of course). Surely it's no coincidence that now that its gone she's finally broke that barrier. Even O'Brien maximised her potential brilliantly thanks to great conditioning.

Won today 6-2 3-6 6-3, she should be able to qualify with ease now considering Maria Elena Camerin has been put into Main Draw, so there isn't no one there to harm her chances but you never know with her.

I saw some of the third set. To be honest, she didn't look as chunky as I'd imagined from pics.

She was clearly playing a lot better than her opponent at this point, especially her serve, but seemed a bit anxious and unconfident.

Her opponent beat her recently so it must have been that making her nervous.

On the other hand she beat her next opponent in straight this year and that was on clay, so she must be confident.

Naomi Cavaday has reached the semi-final in Minsk, but she had a tough match against top-seeded Evgeniya Rodina in the quarter-final (7-5, 7-6), whereas her opponent in the semi-final, Lesya Tsurenko, had a bit of a rest, winning the only set 6-1 before Yulia Beygelzimer retired.

Broke off from going through the Sharm entry list to watch a bit of tennis.

Naomi is on the entry list for Sharm 10K 23 June. (I find the lack of national ranking interesting, but I won't bore you with speculation about the effect of the rules and regulations.)

Katy Dunne has withdrawn, so I expect Naomi will too, unless there's another JTC player there I haven't spotted.

EDIT: also in the Amarante list, so maybe she really is coming back.

Currently 1 set all against Jabeur: 6-3 0-6 1-3 (30-30), a break down in the 3rd.

Even if she doesn't win this match against Jabeur, that is a great start already, getting to that level with 2 top 250 players in a first week back… :o

Here's one from a year ago: http://www.lta.org.uk/players-parents/Competition/Aegon-team-tennis/Blogs/2013/Week-7--Cumberland-LTC-National-Open-Women/, so perhaps there's no particular indication that Naomi is in training as she didn't look very different. Still, by a process of elimination, it does let me draw the conclusion that the leftmost person in Fran's photo is Frances Hendry.

I think her wild card entry to Nottingham was her only tournament on her comeback so far.

She has no ranking, so I suppose we are just waiting to see if she is actually going to attempt a comeback, or if this was just an exploratory attempt. I guess it tells us that she has been considering it, at least.

Unless anyone here has any more information?

any idea where?

You can look them up yourself here: http://www.itftennis.com/procircuit/tournaments/women%27s-calendar.aspx;).

She was priority 1 for Sharm Monday week but withdrew. She's still in the entry list for Sharm 21 Jul, priority 3. Which means if you go through all the entry lists, you'll find two tournaments which she would prefer to play. (You can initially enter up to 6(?) tournaments in a week.)

However, there's a pattern here, so it seems likely she'll withdraw from them all again. Withdrawal deadline is Tuesday. Small fines apply to withdrawals after the deadline. On the other hand, I haven't checked that she has withdrawn from all events on 14 Jul, just looked at Sharm 'cause I remembered she'd entered it.
