people have been telling her to lose a few pounds since she was like 13 and she hasnt done it yet

She has...shes just losing weight slowly which is probs better coz drastic weight loss could disrupt her game

Naomi  Another decent effort, shame you couldn't pull through. Now, there are 16 players who lost in the last round of qualifying, so if 16 players from the main draw pulled out, both Anne and Naomi should get in. Anybody fancy going to the States and 'accidently' cause an injury to some of the higher ranked players

Lots of positives to take Naomi, keep up the good work and soon you will be able to do it

Don't want to jinx things but the ankle seems to be holding up now. 3 wins in a row, including a reasonably tight 3 setter. Tough match up next against in form Wickmayer, but even if she loses she'll be rocketing up the rankings in no time as long as she stays healthy.

obviously in slazengers press release about it they got a quote from her along the lines of "i think it'll help improve my game, take me to the next level, etc." which is blatantly lies. the decision was purely based on money. the quad flex 270 weighs in at 285 grams strung, which is a pitiful weight for a pro, even a female one. she would need to add at least 30 grams of lead to make it at least half decent

Glad shes gone back.
Does anyone know whats up with Naomi this year? After the US open last year things were lookign great. She'd broken into the top 200 and was still rising.

2008 she's roughly stayed the same, the latest photos seem to show shes gone back in terms of fitness. Watching her play Hingis last year you could see that she has a great game but needed to work on her movement and fitness but her ball striking and serve was brilliant.

Hopefully this grass season she can get herself together again. A win at wimbledon will make her jump the rankings but she needs to build on that.

Guess the ankle injury at the start of the year didn't help her much. Had a couple of decent results, QF at Patras and Monzon, SF in New Delhi, but also matches lost which she should have won. Hopefully she can get herself back into good shape like she was at the start of the year.

I watched Naomi's match against Venus today. She can definitely hit with Venus. She kept right up with Venus in the first set, never backing down. She has very good ground strokes and has a very good serve. She could definitely be a top 100 player. Unfortunately she need to get into better shape, because her energy was just gone in the second set. She needs stamina. If she had that, Naomi and Venus could have easily gone to 3 sets. Naomi has all the right weapons, she just needs to get herself into shape.

She's just got through to the semis, by beating Georgatou in a final set tie-break after being 5-2 up with 2 breaks.

Georgatou played well, so Naomi did well to hold her off from a great comeback.

From what I've seen this week these two players look the best of the lot, and it would have made a great final.

I know Schaul is a former top 50 player, but she hasn't played anywhere near that level for the best part of 4 years, so winning just two games is not a good sign for Naomi. Hopefully she was just tired from her epic quarter final  but its nice to see her back on tour :)

Also from the Bromley Academy Site:

Congratulations to Naomi Cavaday for making her come back after a five month break due to illness. After struggling for months this was a great achievement for Naomi’s first tournament back. Naomi’s aim for the week was ‘to enjoy competing and get some match practice’ so now fully fit Wrexham $10k was a good place to start.

Now ranked 289 in the world Naomi went into the event as the number two seed and was to play Johanna Konta (AUS) in her first round. ‘I was very nervous going into the match as I haven’t played a tournament for so long’. Konta was a tough first round but after winning a close first set 6-4, Naomi then won the second more convincingly 6-1. ‘I fought hard and was glad to get another match’. In the second round things fell into place and Naomi felt more comfortable in the match, she won easily 6-1, 6-2.

In the Quarter-Final came Naomi’s biggest challenge where she faced Irini Georgatou ranked 605 in a marathon match of 2 hours and 40 minutes! Naomi won the first set 6-2, but Georgatou stepped up in the second set to take it 6-3. Naomi then cruised to a 5-2 lead but struggled to finish off the match. After losing the next four games to be down 6-5 she stayed strong and held her serve to take the third set to a tiebreak. After seven gruelling match points Naomi came through and won 9-7! This was a great hard fought victory. She then lost out in the Semi-Final where her opponent formally ranked 41 in the world played well. ‘I was really happy with my overall performance and enjoyed my doubles match too’. Naomi’s coach Rob Smith commented on the week ‘Naomi got a lot from this week at Wrexham it was the perfect start to a prosperous year’. We wish her all the best in her upcoming events in Sutton and Stockholm.

Lets bring this thread back to life :D
I really want to see Naomi get a wild card into Wimbledon this year, but last year they stated they would only give them to British players ranked in the top 250. Naomi is currently #359, but this is partly due to injuries that kept her out of the game from september 2008 to feburary 2009 - I think they can make an exception in her case, especially considering her performances there over the past 3 years.
2006 .vs. Sugiyama (First time I saw Naomi play) she gave the Ai a real fight, leading 4-1 in the second set before finally going down in two tight sets.
2007 .vs. Hingis - this match still bothers me to this day :bigcry: no explanation needed really!
2008 .vs. Venus - played an excellent first set, then sadly faded. Venus said of Cavaday afterward that she was the toughest wild card she had ever faced

She due to play a couple of piss poor $25k's in Indonesia and Korea over the next few weeks, some good results can definately push her ranking back up where it belongs. Good luck Naomi :bounce:

She will probably will get a Wildcard but for the qualies unless they do make this exception. I would like to see her get one and more Brits to get wildcards because thats who we, the britsh public want to go and see and support.

I think they should calculate what ranking she would have had if she had been able to play during that time and use that theoretical ranking. Any method used would be speculative, but if the method chosen were to indicate a ranking in the top 250, then it would be to the advantage of British tennis to adjust the cut-off rule in this way. The ranking system penalises players quite severely if they are injured for a few months.

I think she'd be much better off in qualifying. I think she'd have a great chance of qualifying get 60 points into her ranking then be in the MD full of confidence and rearing to go.

I know we should do the same as all the other grand slams where they give each other 1 wildcard for their country. Because whats the point giving out wild cards to unknown foreign players and also there are no comeback players who wants a wildcard, so we
might aswell give all wildcards to British players.

 Cmon Naomi! 40 points in the bag, make it more! Great start, though I expected the win I never expected that score.

Yes she has a real good chance of qualifying. I think it was a good choice in the end for her to be playing the qualifying event.
