Doubles semi-final
------------------

- Vera Zvonarëva/Elena Likhovtseva lt. CARA BLACK/RENNAE STUBBS [1], 6-4 7-6 (7/4)

The match started at 16:52 PST; I followed live scores at http://www.wtachamps.com/ (http://www.wtachamps.com/)

Here are my notes as I wrote them at the time:

First Set
---------
ZVONA/LIKHO *@_____@*_ 4
BLACK/STUBB __@*@*@__* 6

Bepa serving 0-0: 30/0, 30/15, held.

A good start by The Girl Who Is Something Special! :)

Stubbs serving 0-1: 0/15, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.
Elena serving 2-0: 0/15, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.
Black serving 1-2: 15/0, 15/15, 40/15, held.
Bepa serving 2-2: 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), broken.

After such wishful beginnings, it's all starting to go pear-shaped - or should that be tear-shaped? ;)

Stubbs serving 3-2: 0/15, 15/15, 40/15, 40/30, held.
Elena serving 2-4: 0/15, 15/30, 15/40 (2 BPs), 30/40, broken.
Black serving for the first set at 5-2: 0/15, 15/15, 15/40 (2 BPs), 30/40, broken.
Bepa serving to stay in the first set at 3-5: 15/0, 15/15, 40/15 -> 40/40, ad VZ, held.

Good girl - that was a tough game after 40/15 became deuce.

Stubbs serving for the first set at 5-4: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15 (2 SPs), 40/30, Black/Stubbs won the first set 6-4 at 17:26.

Second Set
----------
ZVONA/LIKHO __* * *@* *_ 6(4)
BLACK/STUBB @* * *___* * 7(7)

Elena serving 0-0: 0/15, 30/15, 30/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad EL, Deuce #2, ad CB/RS, broken.

Why have Elena serving first, when the rules allow Bepa to serve first at the start of any set?

Pride and fairness aren't the keys to a successful doubles-partnership - the recessive partner should always submit to the will of the dominant partner (although it wasn't clear to me from watching Bepa and Elena at Wimbledon whether Bepa was indeed the dominant partner - unlike the Super Maria Sisters where it was clear from their body-language that Big Maria was the boss of Little Maria).

Stubbs serving 1-0: 15/0, 15/15, 15/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad RS, held.
Bepa serving 0-2: 0/15, 40/15 -> 40/40, ad VZ, held.

And again, as at 3-5 in the first set, Bepa taken from 40/15 to deuce, but still holds.

Black serving 2-1: 0/15, 15/15, 15/30, 40/30, 40/40, ad CB, held.
Elena serving 1-3: 0/15, 15/15, 40/15, 40/30, held.
Stubbs serving 3-2: 15/0, 30/15, 40/15, 40/30, held.

Bepa serving 2-4 (scoreboard says Elena is serving - but is it wrong now or was it wrong earlier - or is the umpire Ted Watts? ;)): 30/0, 30/15, held.
Black serving 4-3: 0/15, 15/15, 30/15, 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad VZ/EL (BP #2), Deuce #2, ad VZ/EL (BP #3), Deuce #3, ad CB, Deuce #4, ad VZ/EL (BP #4), broken.

And suddenly, this second set - which had felt like more of a procession than a contest - has a very different complexion. Bepa and Elena are in with a shouting chance at 6-4 4-4!

Elena (scoreboard says Bepa) serving 4-4: held to love.
Stubbs serving to stay in the second set at 4-5: 30/0, 30/15, 40/15, 40/30, held.
Bepa (scoreboard says Elena) serving 5-5: 30/0 -> 30/40 (BP), 40/40, ad VZ/EL, Deuce #2, ad CB/RS (BP #2), Deuce #3, ad VZ/EL, Deuce #4, ad VZ/EL, Deuce #5, ad VZ/EL, Deuce #6, ad VZ/EL, held.

Well held after 30/0 became 30/40! This match is becoming very deucy after only one deuce in the first set.

Black serving to stay in the second set at 5-6: 30/0 -> 30/40 (SP), 40/40, ad CB/RS, Deuce #2, ad CB/RS, Deuce #3, ad VZ/EL (SP #2), Deuce #4, ad VZ/EL (SP #3), Deuce #5, ad CB/RS, held.

Three set-points missed, but now it's a tiebreak. A tiebreak is often described as Russian Roulette, but will it be Russian Misery for the second time tonight? (after Maria Sharapova's heartbreaking loss of the first set on a tiebreak).

6-6 tiebreak: CB/RS 3/0*, 3/1*, *5/1, 5/2*, 6/2* (4 MPs), *6/4, Black/Stubbs won 6-4 7-6 (7/4) at 18:37.
