PYW Rankings

This week's rankings have been highly anticipated. They were the ones partially determining what players would make it to the PYW WTA Tour Championships, but also, as usual, what players would rise and fall. This week has some considerable changes in the rankings.

Important changes in the rankings:

- Despite qualifying for the main draw in Philadelphia, Rossana de los Rios failed to defend her 2004 Advanta Championships title. Her loss against Nadia Petrova, in which she only won two games, was very sour. Paraguay's only PYW player drops fifty spots and lands well outside of the Top 100, at #112.

- Sofia Arvidsson did great to reach the final of Québec City, losing to Loeffler-Caro. Sweden has two players in the PYW Top 100, with Hanna Nooni being the other one. Nooni was Sweden's most popular player for a long time, but she has now been surpassed by Arvidsson. Arvidsson's ranking is #67 (+29), whereas Nooni is ranked #78 (+3).

- Elena Dementieva won Philadelphia and that title was enough for her to become Russia's most popular player again. She overtook Myskina for the #2 position on the rankings, still behind Kim Clijsters. This could have considerable consequences for the Tour Championships.

- That Maria Emilia Salerni won Québec City last year was a big surprise. It appears to be a fluke, as she crashed out to lucky loser Mélanie Gloria in the first round this year. Being this unsuccessful causes her to fall out of the Top 100, landing at #147 (-62) this week.

There are more landslides in the rankings though. Just download the files to see these changes!

Player of the Week:

Who else than Nancy Loeffler-Caro? WTAworld's favourite double bagel victim didn't have to eat any bagels in Québec City. Instead, she qualified for the main draw and went on to win the entire event, dropping only two sets! This earns her an incredibly high ranking of #131 - if only she were that successful in real life! This is how she won the tournament:

Q1: Alizée Paradis CAN [WC] | 6-2 6-2
Q2: Lubomira Kurhajcova SVK [3] | 7-6 6-2
Q3: Mélanie Gloria CAN [8] | 2-6 6-1 6-4
R32: Laura Granville USA [4] | 6-2 6-2
R16: Henrieta Nagyova SVK | 6-4 6-2
QF: Aleksandra Wozniak CAN [WC] | 6-4 6-3
SF: Stéphanie Dubois CAN [WC] | 6-1 6-3
F: Sofia Arvidsson SWE [8] | 7-6 6-7 6-2
