I was at the Advanta Championships today. Below are a few match reports.

Ai Sugiyama d. Iveta Benesova 7-5, 6-4.
Sugiyama got off to a very good start. She broke Iveta at 15 in the first game. She then battled back from 0-40 to hold. She followed this up with another break to go up 3-0. Iveta then battled back. She broke Sugiyama with a cross court winner and then held at love to get within 3-2. Sugiyama goes up 40-0 love but Iveta battles back and breaks on a big forehand that Sugiyama get can't much on. Iveta can't keep her momentum going though and gives the break back, losing at love. Sugiyama held easily to go up 5-3. Benesova held and then converts her 2nd break point of the game on a forehand error from Sugiyama. Again, Iveta can't hold it and gers broken on a cross court winner. Sugiyama then used two aces to giver her the 1st set 7-5. The 2nd set started with 6 straight holds. The 5th game was a struggle hold for Iveta. There were several deuces and one break point, before she finally held. The 6th game was a struggle for Sugiyama. She fought off a break point and eventually held. A break finally came in game 7. Iveta missed an overhead that gave Sugiyama a break point. Sugiyama hit a powerful cross court winner to convert the point and go up a break. She couldn't hold it and Iveta converted the first of two break points to get back on serve. But she couldn't hold it and got broken at 15. Sugiyama served in match and was in trouble on 1st two points. Iveta had her on the run on both points but failed to put away vollies and Sugiyama found herself up 30-0. Sugiyama holds on and wins 7-5, 6-4.

Sesil Karatantcheva d. Vera Zvonareva 7-5, 6-3.
Sesil got off to a good start, breaking Zvonareva at 15 in the 1st game of the match. She then held at 15 to go up 2-0. Zvonareva held, Sesil held and Vera held again. Then things got crazy. In the 6th game of the set, Sesil saved 2 break points with a little help from Vera. She wasn't as lucky on the 3rd break point as her backhand error gave Vera the break. Sesil then broke right back, breaking at 15. She couldn't hold it. Vera was happy to hand the break back, a double fault gave Sesil the break point and then Vera hit a ball long after a long rally to give Sesil yet another break. Sesil served for the set but was unable to hold. Now at 5-5, a forehand error from Vera gave Sesil another break, the 6th straight of the set. Serving for the set again, Sesil was able to get her first serve in and it made all the difference as she held at love for a 7-5 first set win. The 2nd set started off with a continuation of the break fest. The first 3 games were breaks, Sesil breaking twice. Sesil held easily in the 4th game to go up 3-1. She couldn't hold the lead and Vera won the next 2, breaking on a ball that looked long. Now at 3-3, Vera got up 40-15 and it looked like she was gonna take her 1st lead of the match but Sesil hit a cross court winner and the Vera produced back-to-back forehand errors to give Sesil a break point. Sesil returned the favor with a forehand error of her own. Sesil got a 2nd break point but Vera saves it after a great point with both players running down shots. On the next point Vera had Sesil on the run and had an easy overhead but hit it into the net, giving Sesil a 3rd break point. This time she took advantage and hit an easy winner as Vera fell down. Sesil then had an easy hold to go up 5-3 in the 2nd set. At this point, Vera was done. Sesil broke easily at 15 to win the match 7-5, 6-3.

Nicole Vaidisova d. Vanessa Henke 6-1, 6-1
Henke won the first game of the match and should've stopped there. Nicole rolled after that. She ran off seven straight games. Then Henke held in the 2nd game of the second set and promptly lost the next 5. Nicole was just too much for Henke. She overpowered her in every way.
