Injured Schnyder could miss Linz final (updates after Petrova win)

By Barry Wood

LINZ, Austria, Oct 29 (Reuters) - Patty Schnyder (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/92/) defeated Ana Ivanovic (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/998/) 7-5 6-2 in the semi-finals of the Linz Open but could miss Sunday's title match against Nadia Petrova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/196/) after injuring her left wrist in a fit of temper.

"It's pretty stupid, and very unlucky how it happened," Schnyder said after getting her wrist and hand bandaged.

"I was still able to play but I had a lot of pain. I had some pain-killers during the match and at the end it was a little better.

"There is nothing really severe and I'm going to get some treatment and I need to take care of it. I think I'll be able to play the final."

If she is fit, Schnyder will play third seed Petrova after the Russian beat unseeded Czech Kveta Peschke (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/982/) 6-3 6-4.

Petrova, who is still searching for her first WTA crown after finishing runner-up four times, will be aiming to break title jinx at the site of her first final in 2003.

Schnyder chalked up a fourth win this year over the 17-year-old Serb in a scrappy affair.

THREE SPOTS

Nine of the games in the opening set went against serve and both players failed to reach anything close to their real standard.

Schnyder's victory means she is virtually certain to take part in the WTA Championships, to be held in Los Angeles from Nov. 8, although five players are still chasing the three remaining spots.

As well as Schnyder, Justine Henin-Hardenne (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/319/), Venus Williams (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/87/), Elena Dementieva (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/89/) and Petrova all have a chance to qualify.

Williams, however, has played just one match since the U.S. Open and has withdrawn from the final run-up event in Philadelphia next week.

Kim Clijsters (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/49/), Lindsay Davenport (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/93/), Mary Pierce (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/160/), Maria Sharapova (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/403/) and Amelie Mauresmo (http://sports.yahoo.com/ten/players/166/) have already qualified for the season-ending event.

Although Petrova won both her previous matches against Peschke, the Czech had held match points against her at Wimbledon this year. It took Petrova some time to break down her opponent's resistance.

She eventually broke in a tightly-contested game to lead 5-3 and served out the set to love with a pair of aces.

Petrova bided her time in the second set before she broke for a 4-3 lead by forcing Peschke to hit a forehand volley long.

On Eurosport they said that it's only a bruise and that she should be fine for the final.

If Nadia loses to an injured Patty.... :scared:

I'd prefer if Patty can actually play though...I don't want people saying Nadia didn't "really" win a title if she wins by default.

She hurt herself when she smashed the racquet to the ground in the first set. Stupid...

Shnyder and Henin are definite qualifyers now, so Schnyder will better rest until LA and skip Philadelphia.

Let's say PP retires... up a set, and on serve in the 2nd. So then the real PP will be Poor Petrovarated, finally winning a title tarnished by a likely loss in the final if her opponent was healthy. :o

Yeah, but the question is: would she care? A title is a title if you ask me.

It's WTAWorld. I think some people here care more than she does :o

And that raquet smashing of Patty was just beyond idiotic. If you have to do it, do it right ;)

Oh wow, hopefully its not a serious injury to her wrist. Wow I see that Ana has fallen prey once againg to Patty's incredible variety and tough game indoors. Well at least she made it a close set for the first set. Here we ago another chance for Petrova to get that first elusive title. We shall see, how everything unveils.
