View Full Version : Who's the most beautiful among the top twenty female players ever?

By 'top twenty female players ever', I specifically intend you compare players by dominance in their period, and their record of accomplishemnt. Maria Sharapova could probably beat Helen Wills Moody. Athletes are way bigger, faster and better trained today. But Helen Wills Moody is an all-time great. Maria Sharapova hasn't had a chance to become one yet.

You may have to do some research to come up with a coherent answer on this one. Suzanne Lenglen, for example, was quite the star in her time. One other thing, just so we're comparing apples to apples, we are counting players doubles careers, mixed doubles, Fed Cup and the Olympics. Not that any of that affects many players.

So, I suppose you first have to decide who the top twenty players all-time are. Good luck.

you ask who is the most beautiful, and then you talk about performance

you ask who is the most beautiful, and then you talk about performance :confused:Yes.

First, decide, based on tennis accomplishments, who the top twenty players ever are.

Then, decide who among that twenty is the most 'beautiful', whatever that means to you.

I know this is kind of an unusual thread, because the posters here who are concerned about tennis, usually aren't worried about looks, and the posters who are concerned about looks don't much care about the actual tennis.

id have to go with Hingis to start.

id have to go with Hingis to start. It's open to question whether or not, Hingis had one of the 20 best all time, measuring players by period.

What I mean by 'measuring players by period' is, only comparing players by the stats that are relevant to both players.

Hingis' weeks at #1 is valid accomplishment when comparing her to Serena, but not when measuring her against Maria Bueno. Maria Bueno didn't play in an era of computer rankings. Similarly, Olympic medals are only valuable when comparing players who had the opportunity to play in the Olympics.

I have a kind of ongoing calculation about the best all-time careers. Currently, Hingis and Venus Williams are tied for #20. Alice Marble is #18. But that's just me.

This maybe the dumbest question ever!!!! When it comes to great beauty, who cares how well they play??? When it comes to great players, who cares how they look(well what sane fan would care)!!!!

Nonetheless the true answer to your question is a woman i learned to despise because of her commentary: Chis Evert....Evert was a great player and quite a looker well into her late 30s before her radiance began to dull...

I don't see how anyone thinks Hingis was beautiful!!! Lightbulb head and awful teeth....That one is as difficult to see as the Maria Sharapova beauty myth!!!

I was going to bad rep you, Volcana, for starting another "who's the most beautiful" thread, but at least this one is slightly different...

It has your unique personal analytical touch to it.... but I think you are asking a little too much of your fellow posters to think or do research before blurting out their instinctive answers

I think we'd all feel more comfortable if you did "the science bit" yourself and then announced the results to us in your classic factual style ;)

Helen Wills (left) and Joan Crawford (right).

I think Helen could've been a movie star. She gets my vote. What do you guys think?

Or Chris Evert.

Volcana must be really bored for posting such a thread.
I don't usually associate these kinds of threads with Volcana.

No Venus, no Serena, no Maria, I am bored too!

PS: However, the thread does have a research angle, which is a hallmark of Volcana's threads.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Apparently, so is earning the distinction of being one of the top-twenty players of all time.

Your first two paragraphs make sense; but I'm surprised you think Chris Evert was more beautiful than Maria. Maria's beauty is no myth and I believe she will prove herself to be one of best twenty players.

For what it's worth, here's my idea of the top twenty players ever, comapring them against players from their own period. Perhaps that to say, I'm comparing career results against what was possible for an athlete at that period to do. The list in ranked by when they won their first GS singles title.

......................... _s _d mx fc (Olympics)
Molla Bjurstedt Mallory.. 08 02 02 -- (-- -- --) 1915-1926
Suzanne Lenglen.......... 08 08 03 -- (-- -- --) 1919-1926

Serena Williams.......... 07 06 02 -- (-- -- --) 1999-2005
Venus Williams........... 05 06 02 01 (01 -- --) 2000-2005

I left off a couple of 6 GS singles winers who had no doubles at all.
Maud Barger-Wallach (1908-1908) and Blanche Bingley (1886-1900). But the 5 GS winners I put on instead of them all had significant doubles accomplishments. I also feel remiss in not including Althea Gibson, who one certainly on of the 20 best players in the history of the sport, but white supremacy in the sport kept her out of GS competition for a while. However, I'm still stuck with the fact that her on-court accomplishments were marginally less than those of Martina Hingis, Venus Williams, and Alica Marble. *sigh* Let raw numbers rule.
