I'm just drooling at the prospect of Maria getting her ass handed to her

She'd better be fully fit for the YEC, though.

Noooo....that's what I'm dreading! Maria hasn't shown that she's back to her typical great level of playing (damn pec injury!) and losing to nicole will be a nightmare! Can't imagine the bashing she would get in this board if ever...But it should be a very interesting match up...just hope Maria gets through to the Semis to potentially meet an off Mauresmo...:)

would a network be covering this?

This would make headlines, whatever the final result.

I do wonder though - they look so much alike the only way to tell them apart for the uninitiated would be the grunts.

Or does Nicole shriek too? I'm desperate to watch her play, but haven't managed to do so yet.

I am ballboying all day Friday from morning to night and I am hoping for that match (with Nicole winning of course) because I will see it since I will see all of the quarterfinal matches

It's about to be a what..... GIRL FIGHT!

Let's go Nikki, take her down. Is this going to be televised anywhere? It seems such a shame for a match like that (if it happens) not to be shown...

Yes, I think ESPN or one of the networks will have some coverage of it. Check your local listing.

If they do meet, I'm hoping Masha will win. I like Nikki but Masha's my favourite.

Vaidisova could pull up the upset, considering Sharapova has been injured as of late. It'll be interesting to see.

haha yeah you're right...so I guess I overestimated an off Mauresmo. But I do hope both Maria and Amelie play in Philly at their very best. They've both had enough embarrassing matches as it is. I won't be able to endure another bad one from Maria.

If Masha loses (she won't, but let's consider it nonetheless), the press will probably jump at the chance of writing her obituary.

"Another tall, blonde, talented and even younger player edges Sharapova out of the spotlight - meet Nicole Vaidisova".

Anyh00.

The match may not be as symbolic as some would like, but I, too, expect it to be interesting.

Exactly, this is the reason why I somehow dread it especially since some have been referring to Nicole as the "new Sharapova" just like Maria was the "new Kournikova" the difference being that Maria was compared to Anna in terms of looks/being Russian while Nicole is being compared to Maria in terms of talent/game play. Imagine if Maria actually had the chance to play Anna and beat her in the process? Anyway, I may be reading too much into it but yeah Maria has obviously more at stake in this match-up than Nicole and it's going to be important for her to win if they ever meet. Nicole is going there with nothing to lose. Maria has a lot. And if Maria loses, everyone will make a big deal out of a 16 year old top 20 player beating an 18 year old former number one (who still has to fully recover from injury I might add). Oh well, the price of fame I guess, I just hope Maria will be healthy enough to pull this one out.

The press is ridiculously shifty. They need a new star every week.

About the Anna K comparisons, it's interesting to note how much flak she still gets for her lack of actual sporting accomplishments, yet it seems everyone wants her back - isn't it why everyone was searching for a new Kournikova to again give the game glamour and popular (or should we say tabloid) appeal?

Anyway, no need to worry about Masha. If she's fine, she'll win. If she's not fine (i.e. not entirely recovered from her injury), she won't even make it to the quarterfinals.

This will indeed be a mouthwatering match, assuming that they both get to the quarter-finals (unlike Birmingham 2005, where Nicole lost in the second round - I was there). I only wish it could be a final instead.

Maria has never lost on the WTA Tour to a player who is younger than herself, but with her poor form (by her own amazing standards) at Moscow and what would be a 17-match winning-streak for Nicole, I worry that Maria might actually lose this record.

(Maria is my second-favourite player of all time; Nicole is currently my 10th favourite, and I'm slowly contemplating whether to induct her into my eternal fanship which currently has 8 members.)

It could be interesting. :hehehe:
But I still think Maria would win because she seems to outsmart fellow big hitters like she did Mirza.

I actually am drooling for this match. Vaidisova has shown that she has many qualities of a champion. She rarely if ever loses to players ranked lower than her. One of the qualities that haven't shown up is her play against the top players. She played well against Kuznetsova at Wimbledon but we all know what kind of year Kuznetsova has had. She's beaten Petrova but people even question why she's in the top 10 with no title wins (that will change by tommorrow hopefully).
Her game is similar to Sharapova. Their serves are very similar. Their groundstrokes are similar. Sharapova has more power compared to Vaidisova. Their net games are both not that good but sufficient. Both players move good enough from side to side.
This match could really be a preview of what Vaidisova will do next year. Is she going to come up with the wins against the top players and find herself deep in a Teir I or Grand Slam tourni? Will she just have consistent year in the rankings like Golovon and Jankovic had this year?

I hope Masha will come out of this the winner and show the young upstart who the real teen queen is.
