Isn't in compulsary in Israel for everyone to join the army - I think Smashnova did it when she was younger.

Yes, but I think it was voluntary for Smashnova because she's an immigrant. I could be wrong.

it is not voluntary.in israel you must join the army.
smashnova did and her ranking went down.
i hope that the army will let peer do what she wants and need like many israeli pop stars and models..........

In general woman spend 2 years in the army. Officialy this is the time that Shahar will be "soldier". However she will be now for 3 weeks in the first step. Her status is "Excellent sportswomen", so she will be able to train without problems and also to go out for tournaments outside Israel. The only thing is that she'll need go back to Israel after the tournaments. Anna Smashnova had many problems with the army but it was because it was 12 years ago and she wasn't famous as Shahar.

smashnova did her mandatory service, but as stated here already - at the time it wasn't so easy to get special privledges that nowadays are layed out very clearly for every sport and art (musicians have the same status - i'm talking about world-famous pianists, viloinists and so on - they just have to play in the army's official bands a few times a year (around 20 times).

poor Shahar :(

I dont know what to think about israeli army. it sure is backwards and inappropriate these days to get all people in the army
but the israeli army surely is a stabilising factor in the policy of Israel. it connects people of all ages, sozial origins which is definitely a plus
