View Full Version : Who will win FO, Wimbledon & USO in same year?

Calimero377

What do you think - is it possible for one of today's players to win those three most prestigious tournaments (FO, Wim, USO) in the same year?
Who might be the player?

It is a very rare achievement.
Only these players have accomplished it:

1928: Helen Wills (USA)
1929: Helen Wills (USA)
1953: Maureen Connolly (USA)
1970: Margaret Court (AUS)
1972: Billie Jean King (USA)
1984: Martina Navratilova (USA)
1988: Steffi Graf (GER)
1993: Steffi Graf (GER)
1995: Steffi Graf (GER)
1996: Steffi Graf (GER)
2002: Serena Williams (USA)

Maybe Serena again? For the 2nd time?
When all-time greats like Connolly, Court, King, Navi did it only once?
And Evert and Seles never?

What do you think?

I accomplished the corresponding feat for an actress, capturing the New York Film Critics Circle Award, the Golden Globe, and the Oscar, all in the same movie season for the same performance.

Serena Williams doesn't have a shot in hell.. not any more. I would say the only players that have a chance right now is Clijsters and Henin when she gets over her hamstring injury. They can both play clay court tennis as well as good on the other surfaces. :)

I don't think Kim or JHH can win Wimbledon... not with Venus, Serena, Davenport & Sharapova, or Mauresmo all playing. all of those are better on grass

Maria & Lindsay or Venus won't win the FO IMO. Mauresmo won't win anything in the near future... I guess Serena is the only one who I'd give a chance simply b/c she's done it before.

Many people thought Serena would never win the French Open. It is all about how much you want it. Serena wanted to win a Grand Slam really bad, and she did so. Venus can do it, in my opinion...

Honestly...I'm not diminishing Serena's win at the French Open, but she played Pierce, Jennifer, and Venus in her last three matches. No claycourt specialists- maybe Pierce, but Mary was a dog back then. All in all, if Venus gets a good draw at the French Open, Justine a good one at Wimbledon, anything is possible.

And Venus had Seles, Clarisa Fernandez, and Serena. Not exactly clay court goddesses themselves. ;) (Seles yes, a clay court queen, but she was no match for a healthy Venus in 2002.)

Yes, she had really bad luck in 2003. She was injured at Wimbledon. Otherwise she would have completed this sweep (FO, Wim, USO). It was not meant to be ...

Did Steffi ever win Roland Garros, Eastbourne and Tokyo in the same year though?

Did she ever drink a pint of water whilst throwing her voice?

Did she make a house of cards 18 feet high?

Cos like, I can name at least 91 tennis players who have done the third.

Serena and Venus can easily win another slam no question about it. But, they no longer play at a consistently high level all year round so the 3 slams in one year will be difficult for them to achieve (or repeat, for Serena).

Justine did make Wimby final in 2001 and took Venus (at her peak) to 3 sets. She can win Wimbledon especially if Venus and Serena don't show up due to injuries. However, Justine will not win the 3 slams in a year because her physical condition now does not allow her to play with sustained intensity for the whole year.

Clijsters may win the 3 in a year if she plays extremely well and if the Williamses and Justine don't play at their best.

Mauresmo will self destruct everytime she is about to reach another slam final.

Sharapova will not win French Open.

Lindsay will retire in 6 months.

Venus can do it cuz shes not a "bad" clay courter her talent alon should get her to atleast the QF (Maria) because Venus is WAYYY better than Maria is no offense to Maria but shes not a very good clay courter. As for Serena think about it her 2nd slam was the FO it was her 3rd GS final so I don't understand why Serena is counted out especially since she's done it before and because she has said she likes to play on clay

But we must not forget that FO 2002 had the perhaps weakest field since they days when Navratilova won Roland Garros!

weakest field...LOL...Both the semi-finalists from the year before, Clijsters and Enna, were both IN the draw...Enna REACHED 3 straight claycourt finals that year and won in Berlin...She WAS one of the favourites going in...Kim Clisjters had just won Hamburg so she was playing well also...

It's not Serena's fault that Enna went out in the 1st round and Clijsters going out not too far after...

Plus, we had Jennifer Capriati, the defending champion, playing well...Venus Williams, who was playing well...And Monica Seles who from summer 2001 until this time was playing her best tennis in a LONG time...(semis at Austrailian Open beating Venus Williams and PUSHING Hingis to 6-4 in the 3rd.)

So we have:
Serena
Venus
Jennifer
Enna
Clijsters
Seles
Amelie Mauresmo
Mary Pierce(1st GS QF in years)

ALL these players were playing well and a couple were HEAVY favourites...Just because some went out early like Enna DOES NOT mean the field is weak...

Weak field my behind! :nerner:

If she stays healthy, Serena will do it again. She's done it before, so she knows what it takes to come through down the stretch. Venus can because she got to all of the finals with Serena, so she also knows how to handle the pressure of the later stages in the Slams. Kim and Justine are my third and fourth picks - if they steer clear of the Williams sisters.

That was just a dig especially for Cali ... not for the humble Graf fans who respect Graf for her outstanding career, and also respect the careers of others.

Hallaluleaj!

If Chris had been stabbed in 1984 Martina would have won 85 and 86 as well!

If you compare Chris Evert with Sanchez as competition, its easy to see who had the stronger opposition.

Hmm, Seles was stabbed in 1993.
In 1988 Navratilova was Graf's main competitor.
In 1995 Seles chose to skip FO and Wimbledon (played only USO and lost to Graf).
In 1996 Seles was Graf's main competitor.

So maybe 1993.
Seles only made the semis or better in Wimbledon once.
Seles never beat Graf on U.S. hardcourts.
That leaves FO 93.
Maybe Seles would have beaten Graf again with 10-8 in 3rd as in 1992. But we all know that Graf of 1993 was better than Graf of 1992. So no, not even 1993 is probable ...

There will be many players in the next 100 years who will do that.
Probably no-one of the current players.

We have many sportspersons in today's current professional sports who have tough competition but who nevertheless rewrite the record books (Woods, Schumacher, Federer). I don't think women's professional tennis is different. We will have again players who win 15+ slams, who win the Grand Slam and of course who win the FO/Wim/USO treble.

I'm eagerly waiting for Jaz Elle Graf ... :worship:
