My Comments:

Maret ANI: Very good year for Maret who makes her Top 100 debut this week thanks to a 1rst victory on the ITF tour in St Raphael 50K$ challenger. She upsetted 5th seed/n95 Mara Santangelo. She jumped from more than 100 spots in a year (she was n204 at the end of 2004).

Kateryna BONDARENKO: Another player who's having a very good season, Kateryna is frequentely listed on that thread. This week again, she's up from 9 places reaching the 2nd round of the qualies in Zurich TIer I 1,3 M$ ousting 9th seed/n53 Virginie Razzano before loosing to n48 Jill Craybas.

Agnes SZAVAY: One of the teen sensation of the year. Agnes is only 16 and get closer from the Top 150 (she was n348 at the end of 2004). Last week, she reached the 3rd round of the qualies in Zurich Tier I 1,3M$ upsetting n84 Julia Schruff and especially 4th seed/n30 Anabel Medina Garrigues before falling to Roberta Vinci (n47).

Faster Moovers in the Top 10, 20, 50, 100, 150 and 200:

Top 10:
Lindsay DAVENPORT n1 (+2): 18 months ago, Lindsay was hesitating to continue to play on the tour...and since that, she's battling for the n1 position...it seems that she made the right choice. She has been winning last week her 51st tittle in Zurich Tier I 1,3M$ over local Patty Schnyder (6th seed/n10). Lindsay prooved once again how determined she was saving 2 match points in the early round against Daniela Hantuchova (n19).

Top 20:
Ana IVANOVIC n17 (+4): Ana seems to be back to the level she had before the summer! She's also back in the Top 20 and closed to her best (n16) reaching for the 1rst time a semi final in a Tier I (Zurich 1,3M$) loosing to eventual runner up Patty Schnyder.

Top 50:
Katerina SREBOTNIK n31 (+12): Very goog run for Katerina in Zurich Tier I 1,3M$ reaching the Quater final as a qualifer. In the qualies she ousted 1rst seed/n27 Flavia Pennetta, then she beat n36 Shinobu Asagoe and created one of the biggest surprise over Amelie Mauresmo 2nd seed/n4 before falling to Ana Ivanovic. Katerina is back closed to her best ranking (n30 in february 2003).

Top 100:
Maret ANI: see above.

Top 150:
Elena BALTACHA n122 (+25): As 1rst seed; Elena won logically Jersey 25K$ Challenger beating 6th seed/n306 Daniela Kix 2 weeks ago. Last week, she reached the 2nd round in St Raphael 50K$ challenger falling to eventual runner up Mara Santangelo.

Top 200:
Angelika BACHMANN n191 (+21): Angelika is back in the Top 200 reaching the semi final in Houston 50K$ challenger falling to 1rst seed/n77 and eventual champion Amy Frazier.

Thanks, fredbdx!

I'm especially excited for Elena Baltacha this week. The British women have a hard time reaching the top 150, don't they? :( But I hope Bally can go a lot higher than this.

Agnes Szavay continues to impress, too. :)

Well I think that it's going to be hard for Elena to stay in the Top 150...because last year she did really well in the Australian Open and she has a lot of points to defend.... really Elena should have take more advantage of her ranking after the A.O to break the Top 100 (her ranking would have helped her to enter higher challenger like 50K$ or 75K$ and even Tier IV WTA).

Concerning Agnes, there's no question that she should one of the girl to follow next year on the tour!

You're right. But sadly, Elena really struggled most of the year. She entered tons of events, but from late February through late September, I see that she never won two matches in a row. Many times, she lost her first match of an event.

So I'm glad she hung in there, because FINALLY, after all that disappointment, she's starting to do better again, at least getting a few wins at the 25K level. That has to feel good. I hope next year she can gain some much-needed consistency and work her way up on a more solid foundation. Best of luck to her! :)
