Review of Semi Finalists

Punam Reddy Rank: 559 Age: 18

She has had a terrible year before this tournament only winning 8 matches and losing 11. She seems to really enjoy Mumbai having reached her only Quarter final this year there and also reaching the Semi Fianls of the 25K there last year. Her best win this year has been over Charlene Vanneste ranked 612 but she has taken an inform Cetkovska to 3 sets. She has career wins over Andreja Klepac and Napaporn Tongasalee, both being at Mumbai.

http://www.hindu.com/2003/09/10/images/2003091003311901.jpg

Shruti Dhawan Rank: 515 Age: 23

Shruti has had an impressive year winning 21 matches and only losing 15. She has reached 3 Quarter finals in 10K's and a semi final in a 25K in Mumbai and has alos won a match at the WTA tournament in Hyderadab winnign her Qualifying first round match. This year her best win has been over Julia Vorobieva ranked 292 and in her career she has a win over Rushmi Chakvrathi with a score of 6-1 6-1

http://www.sportstaronnet.com/tss2440/24400381.jpg

Pichittra Thongdach Rank: 756 Age: 18

Pichittra hasn't had a very successful year only winnign 13 matcehs and losing 11. She has reached 2 semi finals of 10k's this year and alos 2 Quarter Finals. Her best win this year has been over Shizu Katsumi ranked 696, but she has alos taken a set off Shiho Hisamatsu ranked in the top 200. Her best win to date in her career has been over Thassha Vitayaviroj ranked 486, so this tournament is a real surprise.

http://www.jirobkk.com/album/$10K_Bangkok_Thailand/2004_Part_1_(30)/b4.jpg

Isha Lakhani Rank: 523 Age: 20

Isha has played sparingly on the ITF tour this year having only won 9 matches and lost 6. She has however reached one 10K Quarter final and also won another. Her best win this year has been over Rushmi Chakvrathi ranked 414 but in her career she has wins over Maria Vento Kabchi, Shiho Hisamutsu Napaporn Tongasalee and Sania Mirza . She is certainly the favourite for the tournament

Theklein, that pic is not of Shruti Dhawan but that of Rushmi Chakravarthi.

As for Pichittra Thongdach, she is a very talented player, but got sick some time ago, so she had to take a lot of time off. Glad she's getting back in form. :)

MUMBAI: Isha Lakhani hit her way out of trouble against gutsy Punam Reddy in the MSLTA-ITF women's tennis singles final. The strokemaker from Mumbai remained on court for more than two hours before sighting victory, relieved and exhausted to finish on the right side of 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 scoreline in the $ 10,000 event. The champion pocketed $ 1580 and six circuit points, the runner-up $ 980 and four points.

Isha began with a flourish, wrapping up the first set aided by a break in the third game, playing to strengths and making her intentions clear with a swatted backhand crosscourt winner. Punam came up with aces on gamepoint twice, attacked her experienced rival's serve and almost caught up at 4-5 before bowing to the champion's strokeplay.

Different person

The youngster, seeded one step behind Isha at number six, started on the wrong foot by getting broken in game one, caught up at 2-2 and two more breaks in the sixth and 10th were enough to draw level. Prowling along the baseline, Punam was a different person altogether with a mix of big serves and searing volleys.

Both finalists hit with precision and power in the third set, Isha's variety in shotmaking came to the forePunam relied on raw power to keep the ball in play, though trailed after getting broken again in game one. The fifth seed, frustrated at the delay in clinching victory against a determined opponent showing dramatic improvement in the Mumbai week, had the final say.
