There's a chance for some unranked players to make real progress in this draw, with the bottom half looking particularly open. Here's a photo of four of the players in this tournament (the finalists in the British tour event) from http://www.thisisbournemouth.co.uk

In order from left to right: Miles McLagan, Justin Layne, Alice Barnes and Irina Boulykina

No there's no results yet in the ladies draw. Indeed there may not have been much play, with all the rain today. They do have some indoor courts down in Bournemouth but not many.
I'm going to watch the play on Saturday and Sunday (travelling down there on Friday evening after my course finishes).

You're right, they do, so on Thursday night (if I don't know already from the LTA webpage), I'll ring up Bournemouth to check if they're still holding it there. Of course getting from Bournemouth to Southampton is pretty easy on the train.
However there was certainly some play today, in the men's draw as French teenager Richard Gasquet qualified for the main draw by beating Richard Bloomfield 6-2, 6-2

Obviously the singles scores have already been posted, but here's my views on each match:

Jane O'Donoghue (GB) BEAT Ipek Senoglu (TUR) 6-1, 6-0

Played on centre court, but adjacent to the other semi-final, so I could watch both at once. Senoglu actually won her the first game, on her serve but from then on everything went pear-shaped.
O'Donoghue's serve in particular was much too powerful for Senoglu, and she really struggled to return. Senoglu seemed to be particularly immobile. I wasn't particularly surprised when she called the trainer and took an injury time-out at 3-0 down in the second set (I later learnt she had a badly blistered toe). The last three games were won quickly, with O'Donoghue barely having to break sweat.

Yvonne Doyle (IRE) BEAT Lenk Snajdrova (CZE) 6-4, 7-6

The first two games went comfortably with serve, but then Doyle broke Snajdrova in a tight third game. Doyle was generally more accurate with her ground-strokes and the remaining games in this set went with serve for Doyle to take the set.
Snajdrova gained a new lease of life in the second set, with much more movement around the court. Indeed she raced to a 5-0 lead. Doyle worked her way back in the set with several game of baseline rallies to draw all at 5-5. The next two games were shared to take it to a tie-break which Doyle somehow won 9-7.
Incidentally, Snajdrova started with a pullover on, then later on took it off for a few games, before putting it on again!

The Men's final: Richard Gasquet (FRA) BEAT Levitsky (CZE) 6-3, 6-1

DOUBLES semi-finals:

Anna Hawkins/ Jane O'Donoghue (GB) BEAT Victoria Davies (GB)/ Yvonne Doyle (IRE) 3-6, 6-3, 6-3

Hawkins really took her time to get into this match with an early break of her serve, leading to her and O'Donoghue losing the first set.
In the second set Davies' serve was broken in the very first game. Hawkins and Donoghue never gave up that lead with another break coming in the final game of the set.
By the third set, Hawkins was actually playing the better of the two, playing several seemingly impossible smashes. They strolled into a 4-1 lead, before being pegged back to 4-3. In the last two games, there were several corrections of line-calls (rightly) in favour of Hawkins&O'Donoghue.

Ipek Senoglu (TUR)/ Christina Zachariadou (GRE) BEAT Lenk Snajdrova (CZE)/ Alexandra Srndovic (SWE) 7-6, 4-6, 6-3

The first set had several breaks of serve but resulted in a tie-break which the Turkish/Greek team won 7-4. In the second set, the third service game (Zachariadou's) was broken, and the Czech and the Swede won all their service games. At this stage, they looked the more likely winners as Senoglu looked extremely tired.
Almost inexplicably (perhaps they had flights to Edinburgh to catch?), Srndovic and Snajdrova's form deserted them in the third set as they lost two service games very easily in slipping to defeat.

DOUBLES final:

Jane O'Donoghue/ Anna Hawkins (2*GB) BEAT Ipek Senoglu (TUR)/ Christina Zachariadou (GRE) 6-0, 6-0

Played just 20 minutes (just enough time to see the last 15 minutes of the FA cup final!) after the semi-final, the match was not very inspiring.
I estimate it took maximum 30 minutes, with the players barely even sitting down at changes of ends. Senoglu & Zachariadou's hearts really weren't in it. Again Senoglu called on the trainer in the second set.

So, just the singles final to go tomorrow.

Oh, lovely weather BTW. Sunny, but fairly windy at times. Indeed a few chairs were blown over at one point.

Oooooops, bLuepastures I mean.

And of course congrats to Jane. I really think she is England's best prospect if she keeps fit & healthy. Baltacha & Keothavong are really irregular, it looks like if they don't play in UK they can't win a match.

By the way, I think Jane finally deserves a WC for Wimbledon this year. Do you agree?

bluepastures
May 5th, 2002, 06:16 PM
Only one match to watch today, the singles final.

FIRST SET: Jane O'Donoghue was immediately broken in the first game. However, to her credit, she broke back comfortably and won her next service game too. The next couple of games were strewn wiht double faults and errors, with neither player holding their serve, to arrive 3-2. O'Donoghue now started to really settle into her stride, and showed her superior shot power to stretch into a 5-3 lead. She had two set points at 40-15, but seemed to have a sudden attack of nerves (and another double fault) and it was soon back at deuce. Fortunately now she regained her composure to take the set 6-3 with some very accurate groundstrokes, one of which only just caught the line, much to Doyle's dismay.
SECOND SET: The second set startly briskly with O'Donoghue taking two quick games including a break of Doyle's serve (which really is not the strongest). Surprisingly Jane then chose to change her racquet (I couldn't see a broken string). She seemed to struggle to get to grips with the new one, and lost the next game to make it 2-1. At the change of ends, she restrapped the handle of her racquet, whilst Doyle decided to put on some sunglasses. Perhaps that was a bad decision for Doyle, as she hit some pretty wild shots for the next few games to bring it to the brink of victory for O'Donoghue at 5-2. Also Doyle slipped over (although quickly got up again) during the 7th game.
Like when at set point in the first set, O'Donoghue seemed to doze off a little for the next two games to take it to 5-4. At the change of ends, however it was evident to O'Donoghue rethought her strategy a little and really, did some great serving (including the only ace) to win the final game, and the match 6-4.
The only other player watching was Jane's doubles partner Anna Hawkins (presumably they're travelling up to Scotland together). O'Donoghue won about $1060 for the singles win.
