Suchanan, Tammy get wild cards

Published on October 04, 2005

The first US$200,000 PTT Thailand Open, which is part of the Sony-Ericsson WTA women’s professional tennis tour, will be held at the Rama Gardens Hotel in Bangkok from October 8-16. Local players in the main draw are Thai No 1 Tamarine Tanasugarn and Suchanan Viratprasert who has been given a wild card into the main draw by the tournament organisers.

Suchanan has continued to impress on the Challenger circuit, reaching the final in Shanghai in May and more recently two semi-finals in the US. She has proved an exceedingly tough opponent to beat in the Fed Cup and has a 3-1 singles record in matches against Croatia and Slovakia this year.

Suchanan achieved her highest ranking last year when she broke into the top 200.

In addition, tournament organisers have given wild cards into the qualifying draw for four local players – Montinee Tangphong, Thassha Vitayaviroj, Wilawan Choptang and Nudnida Luangnam.

Tamarine and Suchanan face a strong line-up in the main draw, which in addition to leading players Petrova, Vaidisova, Dulko, Mirza, Martinez, and Asagoe includes other rising stars such as France’s Marion Bartoli and Israel’s Shahar Peer, who has improved from a ranking of 183 at the start of the year to No 47.

Also appearing is Henrietta Nagyova, a two-time winner at Pattaya who is returning to competitive tennis after a long-term injury lay-off. She has been given a special ranking of 81, which enables her to make it into the main draw of the PTT Thailand Open.

Huh, so Tammy didn't make it in directly?

Perhaps Ploy, etc won't need a WC as the cutoffs may be lower than their rank. :)
