View Full Version : Is calling other posters "Nazi" OK here?

This "Sam L" did it several times.

Could it be solidarity among US-UK-Commonwealth posters and mods against Germans?

I couldn't care less what people on this board call me. It's the Internet after all. Also, like, I grew up in extreme poverty in Brooklyn only to single-handedly become a world-famous, Academy-Award winning actress, rising above the poverty and shame of her childhood and battling all the sharks in Hollywood to achieve superstardom and fortune. Like some twerp on an Internet message board calling me a name is going to offend me????

Hm, Helen, I was born with a golden spoon in my mouth.

In earlier centuries members of my family :worship: would have challenged people like this Sam L to a duel.

BTW, some members of my family were killed under the Nazi rule. So it's not exactly a joke for me ...

Only if the insulter was of the same estate. Otherwise, they would consider it beneath them to pay him that much attention.

Joke or no joke, to me it's a message board, it's the Internet, it's not real, so I don't put any weight on what people really say here, particularly the name-callers. But I'm not European, so maybe I don't treat the term with sufficient gravity.

It is really disturbing. All this anti-German hate here. And of course Steffi is the main victim.

They won WW2 (and thankfully so). Why can't they accept at least that a German girl is the greatest-ever tennis player?

I just don't get it ...

This is not real???? Internet is a real thing. The only difference is that you do not have eye-contact when talking but it's comparable to writing letters. You have to put weight on what people say here because they mean it like they write it.

Discuss ....First of all, ARE the posters being referred to Nazis? If they're actual, card-carrying National Socialists, I don't see the problem. If, OTOH, we're just talking about, oh, say.... Bush supporters, I have it on reliable authority that two of tyhem are NOT Nazis, so any generalization is inaccurate. Further, if, for example, they're skinheads, they may be Nazis, but they may just be violent. or Bush supporters. Many garden variety white supremacists are mistaken for Nazis, but in reality, they may just be Bush supporters. It can be difficult to tell them apart 'in the field'.

In short, calling other posters 'Nazis', like calling them 'Bush supporters', or 'scum-sucking spawn of underworld excrementals' is too vague a term to be truly useful. It's too easy to mistake one for the other.

Personally, I just use posters names. It's a lot easier, and people know who I'm talking about. Probably, Sam L was just having a bad day.:)

I don't do that. Hey, I even witnessed The Stabbing as I was in Hamburg that fateful day (and no, I'm not Parche - he doesn't speak English ... ;) ). We all were shocked when we went home.

But Seles' more than TWO-year-long absence can at least be questioned as showing lack of mental strength. And her fans excusing all of Seles' failings post-return (let's say post-AO96 ..... ) with The Stabbing provokes poking fun at THEM (not at Seles).

Some people will find it offensive to use World War Two in a misguided link to the Greatest Ever debate. I personally believe Steffi was the greatest-ever, but for many (most?) of those that don't , what gives you the right to claim that this is the result of 'anti-German hate', rather than just a difference of opinion based solely on tennis matters?

I think there is a bit of a lingering perception in American/British culture, rightly or wrongly, that the Germans, or to be specific, the West Germans, got off a bit too easily after the crimes their country perpetrated in the '30s and '40s, with West Germany being able to become such a wealthy country so quickly after the war. And so i'm guessing that some people, mostly out of ignorance, feel like this undercurrent gives them a license to throw around the term "Nazi" at Germans who they don't like. Obviously the use of this term toward somebody who is clearly not in any way, shape or form a Nazi, is basically a racial slur, and shouldnt be tolerated on the board any more than racial slurs against any other ethnic group.

ALG has been called a "Nazi-bitch" here in GM, I have been called "Nazi" and "Goebbels" when defending Graf's legacy. Not by the majority, but by some people.
