She is very well known to be Maria Sharapova's little cousin. Her father is Alexander Sharapov who is Yuri's brother.

She is currently very active junior. Her hype may truly become a reality. She was training at Moscow if I am right before she moved to USA to train at the prestigious Chris Evert Academy.

Despite the fact that she is cute looking little girl, she has the talent. She plays on tournaments of a higher tier than junior girls of her age. She is definetly having a though training by doing so.

Myself is not a very good source of information even though I did find a couple things a while ago.

Yet, I hope that other fans might as well bring something cool from her.

This may be a very early beginning, but I hope that we may fund a very strong base. Let's cheer for our star of the Future... Daria Sharapova!:D

I couldn't resist but I am cheering for Masha Sharapova's little cousin Daria as my second favorite since July 2004... :)

She trains at Evert Tennis Academy and has some sponsors with Wilson tennis racquets and either adidas or Nike.

The most recent photos of Daria Sharapova were taken this summer of 2005 on the Evert Tennis Academy's website:

Well we better hope that she is awfully as good as her big cousin Maria Sharapova, lol.

She started tennis a bit later at age 7 than Maria at age 4.

Daria Sharapova is truly fighting herself... she plays with people like two years older than her.. so I really hope that she will become so... and absolutely hope no injuries...

Another Sharapova makes her mark
By: WTN
Date: July 14, 2004, 8:43pm

There was no clenched fist, no victory squawk, no dropping to her knees - Maria Sharapova's trademarks since she won the Wimbledon championship this month.
Dasha Sharapova, Maria's younger cousin, simply raced to the net to shake her opponent's hand after a 6-0, 6-0 victory yesterday in the first round of the annual youth tournament at the Black Sea resort town of Sochi.

But similarities between the two cousins, and not just the long blonde pony tail, were startling.

Playing her first match since her now famous cousin became the queen of Wimbledon, nine-year-old Dasha displayed a crisp forehand, an accurate two-handed backhand and a strong first serve on the clay courts.

If she missed an occasional ball here and there, her father, sitting nearby, would yell instructions, while a handful of onlookers, parents and coaches, watched in silence.

Dasha's coach, 67-year-old Yuri Yudkin, also Maria's first mentor until she moved to the United States 10 years ago, has been following the elder Sharapova's progress.

"Yes, there are many similarities between the two," said Yudkin, who began coaching Maria when she was 4 1/2.

"She was a very smart girl, catching everything on the fly. I never had to repeat instructions twice to her.

"Dasha, too, is very smart, although she took up tennis when she was seven. That's a bit too late, I think. In my view, you have to start at four or five.

"Of course, it's very hard to predict anything right now, but I think Dasha has a good chance to follow in her cousin's footsteps, mainly because she loves to play tennis so much."

Young Sharapova barely broke into a sweat as she trounced her opponent, 10-year-old Nastya Antipova, in just 36 minutes.

She then ran to her father, who congratulated her on a job well done. But there was no victory embrace and no post-game interviews.

"No, we don't give any interviews," said Alexander Sharapov, making his position abundantly clear with a hint of menace.

Sharapova's beaten opponent did not shy away from the media.

"I'm not too disappointed, although I wanted very much to win just a game off her," Antipova said before her mother Ilona joined the conversation.

"Of course, my daughter wouldn't have a chance against someone like Sharapova. She trains like a pro," Ilona said with a wry smile.

"This is a hobby for us, we have other goals in life besides tennis."

Asked what she wanted to be when she grows up, Nastya said matter-of-factly: "I want to become a police investigator. I want to have my own gun, a suitcase and a big office. Tennis can wait."

Beware: Maria has a cousin

Sochi, Russia: There was no clenched fist, no victory squawk, no dropping to her knees; none of the gestures Maria Sharapova made famous when she won Wimbledon earlier this month.

Nine-year-old Dasha, Maria's younger cousin, simply raced to the net to shake her opponent's hand after a 6-0, 6-0 victory in the first round of an annual Black Sea youth tournament.

But the similarities are startling, way beyond the long blonde ponytail. Playing her first match since Maria became the queen of grasscourt tennis, Dasha displayed a crisp forehand, accurate two-handed backhand and strong first serve on the clay.

And if she missed an occasional ball here and there, her father Alexander, sitting nearby, would yell instructions.

Dasha's coach, Yuri Yudkin, 67, was Maria's first coach when she was 4. "Yes, there are many similarities between the two," he said. "[Maria] was a very smart girl . . .

Sharapova pulls out
CARSON (USA): Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from next week’s JP Morgan Chase Open, citing the need for rest and recuperation. The Chase Open was to have been Sharapova’s first American hard court tournament in her preparation for the US Open. Sharapova will rejoin the WTA tour for the Acura Classic on July 26. She also plans to play in the Pilot Pen Classic at New Haven, Connecticut, before competing in the US Open, which begins on August 30. — AP http://www.tribuneindia.com/2004/20040714/sp9.jpg A combination picture shows 9-year-old Dasha Sharapova (left), younger cousin of Wimbledon champion Maria Sharapova (right), serving in the first round of the annual Youth Tennis tournament on clay courts in Sochi on Tuesday. Playing her first match since Maria's triumph at the Wimbledon, Dasha also displayed a crisp forehand, an accurate two-handed backhand and a strong first serve belying her age. — Reuters photos

Yes, all of them except the very first tournament "Future Stars" which is Girls' 10.
Well yah I noticed that...;)

My question was if G12 meant Girls Singles 12... not like in Juniors it would be the G1, G2, G3.... G5.

But thanks for clarifying!

Duiz, Sharky was supposed to start this thread but you beat her to it. ;) And I wonder if it's just too soon for Dasha to be promoted and marketed.

Dasha like Maria and Yevgenvy Kafelnikov got her start at the same Sochi tennis club Maria and Yevgeny got started at. And Daria's been coached by Yuri Jutkin who also coached Maria and Yevgeny when they were small.

Dasha at 10 reminds me of Anna Kournikova at 10. ;) And hopefully Dasha will not feel the pressure to be the new Maria Sharapova when it's time for her to try to make the WTA Tour.

Maria also has another young cousin Anya who plays tennis at the Sochi tennis club. But I guess she's not the prospect Dasha is thus we hear very little about her. But it must be hard for her to understand that between her and Dasha that Dasha is the chosen one. But who knows maybe Anya will end up the better tennis player down the road. Only time will tell. Good luck to both of them. I just hope their parents don't put too much pressure on them to be top tennis players. Reality says the odds are against them.

I am sure she must be happy.. she must be living her dream... living in the US, being on the Evert Tennis Academy, and she is up to living the hype that her cousin has brought her forth after Wimbledon.

Plus... she can go to the beach every once in a while.. :worship: Every child with that opportunitty must be very happy!

The only way to make Daria as tough as Maria would be to give her the same background of adversity that Maria came from.

Evening Standard (London) (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4153), Jun 27, 2005 (http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qn4153/is_20050627) by WILL STEWART (http://www.findarticles.com/p/search?tb=art&qt=%22WILL+STEWART%22)

SHE has the same blonde ponytail, the identical ice-cool determination and a wicked double-handed backhand.

Is this the new Maria Sharapova?

It certainly could be for this is the Wimbledon women's champion's cousin Dasha, who is already being tipped for success even though she is only nine.

The similarities are not confined to their looks. Just like 18- year-old Maria, Dasha has a dominant father who barks orders to her on court and has taken her to America to improve her chances of success.

Dasha, the daughter of Maria's uncle Alexander, 38, is at the Evert Tennis Academy in Florida undergoing the same intensive training that Maria and fellow Russian Anna Kournikova went through before her.

American tennis experts say she shows more poise on court than any other girl of her age and that she has a crisp forehand, an accurate, two-handed backhand and a strong first serve.

They are supported by her original coach in Sochi - Yury Yudkin, the man who discovered Maria or "Masha".

"Dasha is a real gem," said Yudkin.

"She is now very close to the standard which Maria was playing at her age.

"She is a very exciting prospect indeed, like Maria was when I first saw her. There are many similarities between her and Maria, with the same rational movements and brilliant technique. Their serves are identical. They look very similar, as if they're siblings, not cousins."

He added: "Of course, Dasha follows Masha closely and is inspired by what she has achieved."

His one criticism is that Dasha started playing tennis at six, not four.

"Really you need to start at four," he said.

Maria has described Dasha as "very good at tennis" and "very cute".

Dasha said: "I dream about repeating Masha's success, of course I do."

Is this the family aim? "Yes," replies her father.

So watch out for the name Sharapova again in the Wimbledon women's final of 2013 - and maybe even two of them.

No news lately since she last played about a month ago...

She's still scheduled to play in the Girls' 12 main draw at Eddie Herr tournament at the end of this month....

Maria Sharapova played and lost in the 2nd round in the Girls' 14 main draw at Eddie Herr tournament in Nov 1997 when she was 10 years old :awww: (same age as Daria today)...

Usually Daria plays 12 year olds so it will be hard to compared, but if Daria plays also 14 years olds.. it may mean that she is trying ot follow the foot steps.

Hi guys. Finally found this thread about dasha. I just have a few questions though. When did dasha come to the US to train? and did she come with her whole family? Those articles after Maria's wimbledon win in 2004 imply that dasha was still living in Russia during that time. And what I find interesting is why they decided to put her in the evert academy and not in bolletieri's where maria was trained. do you think her family is trying to avoid early comparisons to maria? or do they probably just think the evert academy is better suited to dasha? Maria's other cousin someone mentioned - Anya I think - is she dasha's sister or cousin? And there arent pix of maria and dasha together noh? But it would probably be putting pressure on dasha if maria watched her play at a tournament. And my last question, so far, how does dasha measure up to maria when maria was dasha's age now?

Dasha really resembles Maria but I think Maria was prettier when she was dasha's age...haha...yeah just bring on the comparisons!...but dasha seems to look more mature out there. Seems like a really serious child. I hope she isnt pressured to achieve really great things like Maria. I'm sure she's already compared to her especially since she carries around that Sharapova name in tournaments. People would instantly be curious to know if she was in anyway related to maria being that Sharapova obviously isnt anywhere near being a common name in th US. Plus, that long blond hair green eyes must be giveaways. But I agree with the poster who said that dasha reminds one of Anna K. I guess her looks are a combination of her cousin and Anna which shouldnt be bad at all. What I would like to know though is what Maria and especially Yuri think of this little cousin following in the footsteps of Maria. I'm sure we'll be hearing more about dasha in a few years. Both her and maria should be ready for the inevitable comparisons. :)

She come to the US to train in late 2004 or early 2005 i think, I think she came with her whole family, I would say that they believe the evert academy is best suited to dasha.... As for ana, i dont know if she is dasha's sister or not.. i doubt it, for if she was, im sure it would be mentioned in the few articles about dasha... I dont think there are any pics of maria and dasha, they sure would be cute to see if there were.. im sure in the Sharapova family album somewere you would find some  ... I To hope that dasha does not suffer from any pressure or other form of emotional distress... However, im sure she enjoys the happy and fun childhood that every child enjoys :), It is fascinating indeed how similar dasha and maria look, it is some particular gene not just in the sharapova family, but that is common in so many russian females, that beautiful gene.. Blessed with blonde hair, a cute face and stunning eyes... It sure is an exciting future for daria, i suppose like any future it is faced with uncertainty, but if you have that will to succeed like maria and yuri did, then that alone is evidence for achieving your dreams if you feel strongly enough about them!

All in all, go dasha:rocker2::rocker2::rocker2::rocker2:

If there was no Maria Sharapova I highly doubt Daria would have a thread here. Plus I don't think it's good for her to have the pressure of making her "fans" happy at this young of age.

Well, we shouldn't expect Daria to be like her big cousin Maria when Maria was at Daria's age. Because,

- Daria started playing tennis late at age 7 and Maria started at age 4
- Daria is 10 today has started playing Girls' 12 at Eddie Herr and Maria at Daria's same age played and lost in 3rd round of Girls' 14 at Eddie Herr
- We will see if Daria would have a small chance to win Girls's 16 when she turns 13 (in three years from now) because Maria won Girls' 16 at Eddie Herr when she was 13.

That's how good Maria was as a natural talented tennis player.

We should give Daria a break and let her enjoy playing tennis regardless... she very well could be a late bloomer like Lindsay Davenport, who knows.

At least, it's a good experience to get the feeling playing in a big tournament at a young age. :)

Go Daria! Practice harder while enjoy playing tennis :)

Maybe Dasha misses Sochi and wants to go home. It's too bad she lost badly. But it's all a part of being a child tennis player. But what I don't understand is how could Dasha have started playting tennis at 7 when Masha started at 4? Dasha would be farther along tennis wise if she started at 4 rather than 7. But maybe she will be a late bloomer like Davenport or progress like Vaidisova. :)

Unfortunately, she lost in her first match 61 63 to Alexandra Morozova (is she originally from Russia, I wonder?)

I agree. She needs to stop playing with older girls because it's not helping her. It's probably lowering her confidence.

wow...im just afraid that one day all the pressure will cause the girl to get burned out...not that she is being pressured now but it is very possible that daria and most especially her father expect her to do as greatly as maria did...and this is just the beginning...wait until she gets old enough to join the tour...

Morozova is a tough beginning for a tournament.. I think she has to opt to dominate the girls of her age... once she establishes that dominion, she should move on to girls 2 years older... and so on and so forth.

Maria Sharapova just happend to be overly talented that she could PWN girls older than her... Daria must look back at her achievements and works and forecast a better plan corresponding to the fluux of wins this year.

Excellent post bellascarlett. :)

Sharky's negative comments on Dasha are surprising to see and leave me scratching my head!  Relax people. Dasha will improve at her own rate. But I don't understand why her handlers are throwing her in there with girls that are older and stronger that she is when she hasn't proven she can play with them yet. And for a second when I saw the name Morozova I thought why is Dasha playing Olga Morozova? ;)

I also think Dasha should be training at Bollettieri's because he's the master of making tennis players believe in themselves and their abilities. :) Dasha should either be at Bollettieri's or back in Sochi, Russia living life as a normal girl and training at the tennis acedmy where both Maria Sharapova and Yevgeny Kafelnikov learned to play tennis.

I think you must have misunderstood my comments. I totally believe in Daria and support her, no matter what. She wants to be like her big cousin which I am totally in awe with what she said in the article. If she wants to be like Maria, she will and can do it with trying her hardest and be the best she can be in one day!

Okay Sharky I won't scratch my head now that you've clarified your comments about Daria. She's only been playing tennis for about 3 years so she will take longer to develope than Masha did or any other prodigy did.

Whoops, today Daria Sharapova, seeded #4, is scheduled to play Girls' 12 Prince Cup 2005 at the Patricio Apey's Tennis Academy in Key Biscayne, FL.

Good to see that Dasha was experiencing to play with big girls under Girls's 14 to get the feeling but she is back to playing under Girls' 12 this weekend and next week at Orange Bowl.

I wonder if Maria shows up to support her little cousin since she has a sponsor with Prince at the Prince Cup 2005.. hmmm.

Have all those Russian's gotten as far as Maria Sharapova just out of just living in Russia?

I obviously dont know much about her and her family, but if you moved at the age of 9/10, I would think that the decision was mostly her parents'. And whether Daria was a big factor in it or not, I am 99% certain they made the move because it worked for Maria.

That's not important. Best go to ITF Juniors site or other Junior site. Best youo can do. E-mail ITF Juniors site. I think 161 ranked is for the G12 and 315 is for the G14. But you shouldn't take it too seriously. Daria is the youngest in the G12/14, and much better than her ranking.
BTW, told a colleague of mine about young Daria Sharapova.

Daria lost in the final 6-3, 6-4. She lost to her twice. First meeting (6-1; 6-3) was played last year at Paris Arnold Cup (http://www.tennisinformation.com/tourny/5/1/6/3/2/1/9/draw-3-mf.asp#9)

Heartbreaking loss for Daria... :sobbing:

Mighty, I am glad you enjoy following Daria's progress. It's fun to see how well she is playing... she is playing a few more Girls 14 Singles now as she is only 11. I am quite impressed that she just started playing last year in the USTA junior tour after she moved to Florida from Sochi, Russia in the late Fall of 2004 to train at the famous Evert Tennis Academy and pursue her tennis career like her big cousin Masha.

After getting a nice revenge in SF, too bad she lost today by retiring in the finals of Girls 14 tournament. She could have won today, for sure.

I have added the links to each tournament Daria played this year.

I will add Daria's 2005 calendar as a rookie player later. She made huge improvements compared to last year. :)

Maybe she has more opportunities to practice on the hard/clay courts equally at the Evert Tennis Academy where she currently trains. Maria didn't have the chance to train on the clay courts at NB Tennis Academy where it has all the hard courts. I could be wrong.

it's certainly a great advantage to be able to train on both hardcourts and clay, it's probably a good thing she's playing all these clay events because if her game is anything like maria's then she'll do fine on the quicker surfaces, so if thats the case it's definately good for her to be working on her clay game so early.

and yes thanks heaps for the updates. it's more than great to be updated on her progress considering how young she is and that she's not a high profile junior (yet), often people don't care about those players.

Obviously thanks for the update Sue as usual :wavey: Disappointing Daria retired, on the other hand was already seeded in a G14. And Daria took her revenge over J. Jacobs.

Dasha's doing well, looks like she's really stepping it up this year. It's so strange to think that this is only her 2nd year of competing in the USTA.

Does anyone know how close Dasha and her family are to Masha and her family?

And has anyone got any recent pictures of her?

I'm hoping she moves up to G16's soon, just to test the waters at least, because she's easily beating the 13/14 year olds, bagelling alot of them.

But she should defo stop playing G12's and play mainly the G14's

I hope she plays the U12 Orange Bowl this year. That way we can see how she competes on an international level

I think she played last year and lost early. I think it would be too soon to play in the U14 group at such a huge event
