This week promises to be even more crowded than last week, with events being held in Luxembourg, Luxembourg; Guangzhou, China; Seoul, South Korea; Ashland, USA; Biella, Italy and Batumi, Georgia.
The Fortis Championships of Luxembourg is the largest of the events. Last year Silvia Farina Elia took the title by beating Shinobu Asagoe in the final. Who will win this year?
Second qualifying round in the capital of Luxembourg and two local players to cheer for. Claudine Schaul is the highest ranked player in the draw, but hasn't had the results lately to prove it. An embarressing first round loss at the Bordeaux challenger two weeks ago was a new low for Claudine. Maybe a home experience will lift her game back up. Schaul's compatriot, Lynn Philippe, has nothing to prove. In her first PYW match ever, she defeated Wörle in two easy sets. Lynn Philippe: unranked no more.
Luxembourgs neighbours are also well presented, except for France. Germany delivered a bunch of players for this qualifying draw, but only Adriana Barna & Sabina Klaschka were able to win her match. This in stark contrast with Belgium: only two players and both of them won in straight sets.
And last but not least: the top favourites are still among us. Jarmila Gajdosova defeated Katarina in the first and now faces Alyona Bondarenko in the second. Kirsten Flipkens only lost two games against Tatjana Malek in the openings round and comes across Malek's compatriot Sabine Klaschka today. Michaëlla Krajicek plays an interland against Caroline Maes and Michaela Pastikova will try to beat Philippe AND the crowd.
