Scottish tennis sensation Andy Murray could be set to captain Scotland versus England in a new tennis tournament in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen City Council's Resources Management Committee agreed today to approve up to £50,000 towards sponsorship of the inaugural 'Aberdeen Cup tennis championship. The staging of the event will depend on attracting further public and private sponsorship and efforts are already underway to secure the necessary funding.

The two day championship, proposed for Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 November at the Aberdeen Exhibition and Conference Centre, would see a team of Scottish professional tennis players, captained by Andy Murray take on a team from England.

The full Scottish team would consist of Andy Murray, Jamie Murray, Elena Baltacha and the Junior Boy and Girls Champion of Scotland while the England team would be made up of Greg Rusedski (team captain), David Sherwood, Amanda James and the Junior Boy and Girls Champion of England.

Councillor Neil Fletcher, Convenor of Resources and Management Committee said: 'This event will be a first for Aberdeen and will provide an opportunity for Scottish tennis fans to see Andy Murray perform on home soil. A key part of sponsorship would be to provide coaching sessions for juniors giving local youngsters the opportunity to meet and be taught by the UK's best tennis talent. With a sell out crowd of 5,000 attending the singles and doubles matches and tv coverage, the Aberdeen Cup will provide an excellent platform to promote the city to a wide audience.'

Members also agreed to receive a follow up report to Resources Management on the event and details of final costs of sponsorship.

Andy Murray and Greg Rusedski will clash in a Scotland versus England challenge in Aberdeen in November.
The inaugural Aberdeen Cup will be played over 26-27 November and will take a Davis Cup-style format.

"To play for a Scotland team on my home turf against an England team containing the likes of Greg Rusedski is a great opportunity," said Murray.

Rusedski said: "There's always an extra edge when England face Scotland and I'm sure that this will be no exception."

Joining Murray in the Scotland line-up will be his older brother Jamie and current British number one Elena Baltacha, as well as a leading Scottish girl and boy from the Fred Perry Challenge.

Invited to play alongside Rusedski for England are David Sherwood and British number three Katie O'Brien, as well as a leading English girl and boy.

Could be an interesting match between Katie and Elena...Katie's been our most consistent player for a while now, but Elena could be finding form again...
