I don't really like the draw either. :(
Mi-Ra may have to play her new doubles partner in the QF.

Monica_Rules, this tourney is on hardcourt. It used to be played on clay prior to 2000.

Hi, Steveg. :D

Mi-ra just mentioned she will play doubles with Shinobu here. She mentioned some good things for Ka-po after their match,.. so I don't think that would affect this change of partnership.
Maybe Mi-ra is going to play in Japan for two events, so playing with higher ranked Shinobu would be good for Mi-ra.

And she posted a new message on her fan page,.. it says she couldn't access her fan page because she moved recently and it doesn't have internet access yet. And she also mentioned supports in Vietnam event,.. and she'll do her best here again. :D

Go, Mi-ra!

The result was missing in Quali 1st Rd because it was the last match. I had put the result with some of Sunday's result in this thread not there.

I was also interested in her result here, because she had some good result in South America junior team event,... so I was wondering what kind of game she might have.

Quarter-final Match-ups

1-Shinobu Asagoe (JPN) vs 7 Mi-Ra Jeon (KOR)

Kristen Van Elden (AUS) vs WC Jin-Young Choi (KOR)

5 Flavia Pennetta (ITA) vs 3 Julie Pullin (GBR)

Kyung-Mi Chang (KOR) vs 2 Su-Wei Hsieh (TPE)

Quarterfinal would be very interesting.

Kyung-mi Chang looks very good so far,.... most aggressive player in this event. She always goes for her shot,.. sometimes too much. She dictated her match today with her winner or UE against Yuka, a decent one. If she keeps playing this way,... she can go up very high in the rankings. Maybe Top 60. :)
Su-wei is younger but can mix-up well and most persistent player. So, Su-wei would be a hardest one for her.

Shinobu Asagoe looks good also. She has the most consistent stroke game. Mi-ra will have a big test. Hopefully she can pass through to the semi. But Shinobu seems very nice. :)
Good luck to both girls. :D

Kristen has small frame,... but has good game also. I thought Jin-young Choi was just a moon-ball queen. ;) But she is much more than that. Anne Keothavong couln't find an answer today. ;)

I'm hoping for Mi-ra Jeon vs Kyung-mi Chang Final :bounce:

But Shinobu also deserves a final spot. :D I've seen her play several times in 2000 & 2001. At that time, she was not that impressive to me. But in this event, she seems to be a real nice girl. ;) Good luck to her.

Kyung-mi Chang has most exciting game to watch. I've never watched her game until this event. I just got to know her name thanks to a poster in this board. ( I guess the poster will know whom I'm talking about.... ;) ) I thought she would be a "so-so player",.... but she's definitely NOT.
She has the best forehand attack among Asian girls better than Tammy and Ai.( I guess) (Regarding backhand attack, I think Na Li has the best one. And it considers only attack-wise not the overall forehand/backhand stroke performance ;) ) She humiliated So-jung Kim, a aggressive 15 year old junior in the 1st round.
She will play two 50K challenger in Japan and two 25K challenger in China back to back. So, she will rise in the ranking soon.

Su-wei hasn't been that impressive in this event. Almost the same from what I've seen from TV. Consistent, persistent and mix-up well,.... But her family was very impressive. They're realy tennis family! Her two brothers and a sister are always practicing tennis! Especially her younger brother & sister. They looked only under 8 years old,... but they live with racket and ball all week under supervision of their father. He's a quite short man,...(much shorter than his daughter) not talk much. Good luck to her tennis family :D

Kristen looks cute with her small frame. Good luck to her quarter match. Same to Jin-young.

Thanks Eric for some news regarding Shanghai.
I wonder why Mi-Ra decided not to play. A wasted opportunity. :(

Terry, I know very little about Jin-Young Choi except she's 23 this year, and much better than her rank suggests. She plays very few tournaments a year because she attends University (I don't know if she still does). I have no doubt she'd be ranked in the Top 250 at least if she played a full schedule.

I posted the Mi-ra's winning news as soon as I got back from the event site to office.
I was hurry to join business meeting, :( so I couldn't post any details.

Match report for Mi-ra Vs Shinobu

In the preparation session before the match, Shinobu looked very good,... good stroke both side and high percentage service. After several minute preparation match started in court 2.

Mi-ra started nervous in front of home crowd (not that many though.). After several deuce, Shinobu managed to break Mi-ra. But Mi-ra broke back easily. So, 1 all. After loosing her 1st game, Mi-ra really fired-up. After this game, Mi-ra started to play aggressively. She made Shinobu run all over the court. Shinobu made some good shots which could have been winner against other players. But Mi-ra has very good court coverage and her ball was so deep, Shinobu had not much to do about it....
After Mi-ra's leading,... Shinobu found out her normal attack game couldn't hurt Mi-ra, so she goes for more and more making some UEs. That's the whole story. After that, Shinobu showed some frustration. Her coach tried to Shinobu back into the match, but match finished so quickly,... less than an hour.

After the last point, they exchanged handshaking at the net, and Mi-ra bowed several times to crowd in all direction. :D
Yoon-jeong Cho and former player Il-soon Kim was watching the match, and cheered for Mi-ra.
At that time, I wanted to talk to Shinobu something like "Good luck next week". But she was already on the next court with her coach and looked very serious and disappointed. And started to hit the balls with her coach. She looked so professional. :D

I think Mi-ra has the least favorite play style to Shinobu. If she had played other quarterfinalist, she would have played much better. Mi-ra made her run all the time, and hit the ball back very deep with consistency. It was evident Shinobu was bothered Mi-ra's deep ball. Many times she thought the ball would go out,.. but the ball suddenly drops in the line.

The match between Kyung-mi Chang and Su-wei must have finished by now. I had to work but I made it taped . :D So, I'll check the result after the seeing match, not now. Sorry about that. But it should be the exciting match,.. so I don't want to know the result before watching it.

Go, girls!

And I forgot to say "Sorry" to Mi-ra.

I thought her game is not aggressive enough to beat top players. But she proved me wrong. :o After the 1st game, she fired-up and played so aggressively. Shinobu had to run all the time while hitting good shots over and over ,... that ended up errors.

This was the best match I've ever seen from Mi-ra.
I should know she was the player who fought for Wimbledon Jr singles title against [BMartina Hingis[/B]. It has been really waste of talent. Hopefully it will go right way from now on. She beat Prakusya and Evie Dominikovic easily several months ago. I think She can compete with top 100 girls.

Go, Mi-ra!

Single QF.
Jeon(7) def. Asagoe(1) 6-2 6-1
J-Y Choi(WC) def. Van Elden 6-3 6-3
Pennetta(5) def. Pullin(3) 4-6 6-3 6-0
S-W Hseih(2) def. K-M Chang 6-3 6-4

Double SF.
J-Y Choi/Miok Kim def. Pullin/Woodroffe(1) 2-6 7-5 7-6
Hseih/Chan def. Asagoe/Jeon(2) 6-4 7-5

Jinyoung Choi gratuated University last year and now she mostly plays in Korean national tour. She is left-handed and her forehand is great. But, to participate tour, she needs to hit the ball harder than now. She and Miok Kim is the best double team in Korea. They won almost all the tournaments in Korea. (My view is Jinyoung Choi..)

And I saw the game Hseih vs Chang. It showed on Korean TV . Chang's forehand was really strong and tough, but her backhand was far weaker than forehand. Maybe she still has difficult with her left-wrist. K-M Chang will be a better player soon. Hseih's defense was really good, she was consistent and hit the ball fast. Because of Hseih's great defense, Chang made a lot of UE.

You can watch the semi-final match between Mi-ra Jeon & Jin-young Choi on the net.

It will be broadcasted by KBS (www.kbs.co.kr), and they have live stream service for all program on air. I think it's one of the best service in the world. And it's free. ;)
The resolution of the streaming is good enough to enjoy watching tennis.

You can also watch matches from yesterday using their VoD service. (Also free, but requires free membership,..enter your name, address,...etc. Annoying :( )

These two matches are available on the site now.
S-W Hseih(2) vs K-M Chang
J-Y Choi/Miok Kim vs Pullin/Woodroffe(1)

You can access it anytime you want. I just watched the doubles match using internet. The video definition was very good, so you can enjoy it. :D But the commentating is in Korean only, you can hear the live sound of ball and screams from players, though ;)

You're are the expert on junior tennis as well. So you should know something about Mi-ra's junior career. Would you give me some info? How was it? Did you regard her as a promising one?
I started following Mi-ra's result since 2000. So, all I know about her career before 2000,... she reached junior Wimbledon singles final at age of 15, losing to my Martina Hingis :hearts: and she was ranked high in junior ranking. That's all. Another story is that,.... one company picked her up after good result in junior,.. and they hired one coach for her,... and made her practice alone over and over.
After Wimbledon success, she was forced to hit balls only with her lone coach. (newly hired by the company and no other team-mates or training partner.) The dull training session made her burn out. :fiery:
After some diappointing result in some events, the company abandoned her,.. she had to retire around one year,... and then made comeback with another sponsor. :) But struggled with several injuries after that. That's all I heard about her.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, Steveg.
You're right. She was encouraged her success & supports in the Hochiminh City event.

Late last year, she beat higher ranked players such as Evie Dominikovic, Wynne Prakusya, Rika Fujiwara,...etc.
Yesterday, she played Shinobu Asagoe as if she were higher ranked.
Hope that she has good result and luck this year.

You can use direct link for media player posted by Hoon in another thread.

Or.... if you visit the site, you can find "On Air" right under picture on left-upper side. You can choose '2TV' there.
The match will start 12:20 PM (Korean time, GMT+8).

Yeah, the semis between Mi-Ra and Jin-Young was quite boring, but I am sure the final will be better than that.

Mi-Ra had no answers to Jin-Young's moonballs as she pushed herself in a hurry, which ended up making quite a few errors. So Mi-Ra herself hit a lot of moonballs from the second set, and I guess this made the crowd bored to death :o But Mi-Ra doesn't usually play like that.

Much credit to Jin-Young for making semis in a $25K, but I can't seem to like her game. :o

Good luck to Mi-Ra, she gets my 100% support tomorrow

They cut off the coverage after the 2nd set. :(

I wonder if that is how Jin-Young usually plays... It's possible that she only played like that today because she knows how much Mi-Ra hates the moonballs.

Su-Wei, tough loss. Hopefully a well deserved rest after this. Mi-Ra finally better win her first $25K Tomorrow. ;)

------

Eric, I can tell you that Mi-Ra finished 1994 ranked 3 in Juniors behind Hingis and Tu. She also won the Grade A event in Japan beating Corina Morariu, followed by a win at the Grade 1 event in Australia in January 1995.

Her highest ranking in singles is 144 attained in 1997, she went downhill from there. She also reached the QF of Shanghai (WTA) in 1995, losing to Linda Wild and 2nd rd the following year in 1996 losing to Sandrine Testud in 3 tough sets.

I have all her professional results since her debut in 1993, if you have some request, I'll try my best. :wavey:

She plays an all court game and is especially good at the net, infact she is an excellent double player. she and roberta vinci used to play doubles when junior, and they were the best.

danker : Thank you so much your info regading Mi-ra. And I'll study by myself as a kind of obligation. ;)

Regarding playing style, Jin-young always play like that,... so you cant's expect quick match from her. ;) She did the same thing to Mi-ra what Sun Tian-tian did in Vietnam final. She is not a player just waiting her opponent make UEs,... she throw high top spin ball over and over and then suddenly finish the point with her forehand attack. I think that kind of strategy is good enough for top 300 or top 400 players,.. but wouldn't have any chance for a top 100 player. ( except Petrova. ;) :o )

For Mi-ra, she never starts that kind of moon-ball (or high topspin ball). Yesterday match was never near her normal game. Remind the match against Shinobu in 50 minutes.

I really need to go now. I'll come back again.

I'm just back from the tournament site.

While watching the match, I was worried about her stamina cause she had a hard fight over 4 hours  yestday. But she must have trained so hard or mentally tough enough to last 3 setter again. :hearts:

And she had big pressure mentally as well as physically from yesterday match. The semi match against Jin-young Choi was televised not only nation-wide but also world-wide using internet streaming. Many tennis-related internet boards, so many people posted severe critisism,..... some said the two player should be banned in domestic tour forever. ( How ridiculous! :fiery:  )
And the commentator on TV said "It's quite embarrasing to have this moonball game from two nationa representative players. It's pathetic,.. and they should change their game." something like that. And the broadcasting was stopped after second set. ;)

There's a article about this match. And interviews from both players,.... I'll translate it soon. Flavia seemed satisfied during the ceremony even though not in the match. (warning for ball abuse ) ;) She is very fit and most of all,... very nice outfit....almost transparent. I liked it. :o ;)

Good luck to both players in their next tournament.

I went to the final too, and I had a really good time. Eric & Hoon, it's cool that we were all there. I noticed a couple of young guys (one in a blue denim shirt and one guy with a green hat) who were writing things down in a notebook as they watched the match. I wondered if it was one of you, recording stats to post on the board. :)

The match was really close. Mi-Ra jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first set, but it was all because of Flavia's errors. Even at that point, I got a bit nervous because Flavia clearly had a lot more firepower than Mi-Ra. Sure enough, Flavia kept swinging away until her game finally clicked, and she hammered winners until she took the first set 6-4.

Flavia had a letdown, and Mi-Ra jumped to an early lead in the 2nd set, but Flavia turned her game up a notch to take back the lead. Her forehand was just HUGE. She also made good use of the drop shot at times (she won the point everytime she used the drop shot). But Mi-Ra kept hanging in there and counterpunching. Mi-Ra's game was a bit awkward but effective, nonetheless. She doesn't have a lot of power, but she controls her shots well, and she gets a lot of depth. A lot of times, she would hit the ball, and it would look like the ball would float out, but they would somehow land just before the baseline. Flavia's game fell apart at the end of the 2nd set, as she started making a lot of careless errors. It was almost like Mi-Ra's shots were TOO slow, giving Flavia too much time to think about what she was going to do.

Mi-Ra pulled out the 2nd set 6-4, and after that Flavia seemed deflated. She would hit one amazing winner and then follow it up with three unforced errors. Mi-Ra kept getting the ball back, and won the third easily. The match showed you that it's not just power that wins matches, it's also perseverance and guile. According to my count, Mi-Ra only hit seven winners the ENTIRE match, and Flavia hit about thirty, but Mi-Ra still won, thanks to her heart and determination.

Overall, it was a very fun match to watch (even though I ended up with a bad case of sunburn afterwards). Oh, and one note: if you go to see a tennis match, REMEMBER: You can't walk around in the stands except for during the changeovers. So many people were breaking this rule; it was getting on MY nerves, let alone Flavia and Mi-Ra, who both complained to the umpire.
