If you're as bored as I am , go visit her site...

Here is a kid whose parents demanded that the WTA change its rules for her because she was so dazzlingly talented (cough cough).... She is now #1089 in the rankings...

She's as talented *cough* at singing as she at tennis.

You mean to tell me she's still playing. I thought she had dropped off the face of the tennis earth.

HI EVERYONE-MY NAME IS MONIQUE VIELE-I USED TO BE A PROMISING PRO TENNIS PLAYER-UNTIL MY FATHER WHO WAS ALSO MY COACH PASSED AWAY 4 YRS AGO AND A WEEK AFTER THAT I INJURED BOTH MY WRISTS BADLY-SO I LOST MY FATHER AND MY PROFFESSION ALL IN ONE WEEK-BUT NOW I'M FOCUSING ON GETTING A RECORD DEAL AND REAL ESTATE-I HAVE BEEN SINGING SINCE I WAS 15-I WAS KNOWN AS THE SINGING TENNIS PLAYER-LOL-I HAVE PERFORMED IN JAPAN-VENEZUELA AND A FEW OF THE STATES-IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO GET BACK IN THE SWING OF THINGS AFTER MY FATHER DIED-CUZ EVERYTHING IN MY LIFE CHANGED SO MUCH-AND I AM NOW 22-BUT NOW I'M GIVING SINGING MY ALL AND I'VE BEEN WORKING WITH A PRODUCER,LONNIE CHANCE

Sad we will never know how good she would have been. On the other hand, I find it kind of strange she hadn't broken through when she was 18 (she is writing this when she is 22 and says that she played tennis till 4 years ago).

I used to laugh at this kid, but I started to feel sad for her when her father died. Imho this is why she is no longer in tennis. He was her life and he died suddenly. That has to be hard to take and then she tears both of her wrist up the same week. I think the kid gave up her dream because of her loss. It's really a sad case.

I remember when Monica watched her sing and kinda smirked at her, strange that they both have the loss of a father now in common. I hope the kid makes it.

Nope, that impressive #1,089 ranking is from 2001 :p.

He's what I remember (aided by the recent Tennis Magazine article):

- Nick Bollettieri said she was better than Monica Seles at the same age.
- Rick Macci deemed her the "most marketable American player in the last 25 years."
- Bud Collins - "Monique Viele is the 8th wonder of the world."

At some point, her parents also threated to sue the WTA over the 15 year old age requirement for pro events.

If you have a father playing the game with you at the age of 4 and he's with you 24/7 helping you play a sport that you love and then suddenly he's gone for you?? Well that is tragic and quite devastating. I can only imagine if Venus and Serena's dad died when they were 18.
Which is why I hope she makes something of herself. I would like to see her play tennis. I am curious to know what her game is like.

There was a lot of hype around her, and her family trying to get this talented player into a WTA event. In an interview with ESPN she said she could have beaten all the top players at that time (this included Lindsay, Martina, Steffi). The Toyota Princess Cup in 1999 finally awarded her a WC and she was crushed 63 ,61 to unheralded Jane Chi. She didn't have a very good record in any of the challengers she played, never winning a MD match.

She might've had potential, but she unfortunately didn't seem to know how to put it all together in any of her matches.

A few years ago, I wrote her an email, offering condolences regarding her father. She's was kind enough to write me back.

Her story makes me incredibly sad, because I often wonder about all the other girls with big hopes and dreams of an amazing tennis career, having been hyped up and pumped up only to come crashing down to reality for whatever reason.

We only seem to hear about the major crash and burns like Monique, but I'm sure there are many others. At least monique had her few moments in the spot light. Although I'm sure she'd rather have her father back and no spot light at all.
