Match #1:

Ai Sugiyama Vs. Alyona Bondarenko

http://img14.imagevenue.com/loc148/th_089_100_0639.JPG (http://img14.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc148&image=089_100_0639.JPG) http://img111.imagevenue.com/loc218/th_b66_100_0643.JPG (http://img111.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc218&image=b66_100_0643.JPG)

Ai Sugiyama and Alyona Bondarenko played one of the most competitive matches that i saw the whole day, and it was also the first, so it was a hell of a way to kick off the US Open 2005 for me. I came in at the start of the second set, after Ai i dropped the first 7-5 and she was playing very well... it was amazing how flat ai hits, but out of nowhere she can come up with massive topspin and confuse opponents... needless to say, she was consitent and scrappy and Alyona was really frustrated by Ai's playing style and made a lot of errors... alyona likes to hit the ball big and flat, but when you face a WALL like ai, that is tough to do

One thing that i noticed about Alyona's game was her serve... but not on a good note, it was very poor... first serves she would spin in at a max of 90mph and second serves, a measly 65-75 mph... Ai did not attack as well as i would have liked to seen her have, coming to net and the like, but she still play a consitent match with winners here and there but most of her points coming off of Bondarenko's errors and erratic playing style

I came back at 2-2 in the third set, (i left at 3-2 in the second, ai up) and matched the rest of the match from the top... alyona was very tired and that proved to be the end of the match, as Ai ran circles around her and got every ball back... after the match, i saw Ai's mother and congratulated her on her daughter's win... she was a very nice lady and thanked me politely

End Result:
Ai Sugiyama def. Alyona Bondarenko, 5-7, 6-4, 6-3

Match #2:

Ana Ivanovic Vs. Lindsay Lee-Waters

http://img13.imagevenue.com/loc266/th_977_100_0658.JPG (http://img13.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc266&image=977_100_0658.JPG) http://img121.imagevenue.com/loc148/th_ec5_100_0659.JPG (http://img121.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc148&image=ec5_100_0659.JPG)

I did not stay very long for this match, and thus i have very few pictures of both players... one thing that i noticed is that ana was not hitting the ball as hard as she usually touted... she was VERY aggressive on her service, both first and second serves, which lead to a dispicable 4 double faults in her second service game (and, obviously, an early break)

But Ana fought back hard, and i stayed till only the middle of the first set... her serve picked up a bit and so did her groundies

Lindsay Lee-Waters is a very pretty woman who grunts.... loudly.... VERY loudly... EVEN when she is warming up!!!! i never saw someone grunt so loud during a warm-up... otherwise, she hits the ball VERY hard and very flat, but she is too inconsitent to really raise her ranking up much more then where she is now... PS... ivanovic is gorgeous in person

End Result:
Ana Ivanovic def. Lindsay Lee-Waters 7-6, 6-3

Match #3:

Daniela Hantuchova Vs. Camille Pin

http://img103.imagevenue.com/loc234/th_bc2_100_0683.JPG (http://img103.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc234&image=bc2_100_0683.JPG) http://img40.imagevenue.com/loc140/th_aba_100_0678.JPG (http://img40.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc140&image=aba_100_0678.JPG)

Second year that i have seen daniela play live, and i must say, she played much better this year than two years ago (when i saw her against vakulenko)... but needless to say, my girl daniela needs to pick up her game if she wants to really go deep and do the damage in the draw that i know that she can do

I saw the entire first set, and for the most part, it was the story that you would expect from the match-up: hantuchova blasting groundies and serves while pin stayed back, content to hover 6 feet behind the baseline, popping up moonballs and junk shots until hantuchova would either produce a winner or error... luckily, today, hantuchova used her power shots correctly and didnt just go for the lines all the time and really overpower pin

Pin's serve was disappointing to say the least, really no pace and alot of slice, but not enough to trouble a tall player like daniela... hantuchova would constantly slam down backhand returns for winners or forced errors... daniela really put constant pressure on pin, and it was good enough for the win

One thing that i noticed was daniela served EXTREMELY well (the 109 mph pic on the bottom is one of her aces)... many of her servic points were aces, unreturnables, or short returns that produced winners... set point in the first set was a gorgeous ace down the tee... on the downside, her forehand was looking pretty erratic... she would produce an amazing winner one point and then miss and easy put away on the next... overall though, dani is looking good, fit, BEAUTIFUL, and primed to take on the US Open

End Result:
Daniela Hantuchova def. Camille Pin, 6-3, 6-1

I guess it wasn't her best day but then again she came in injured from canada and barely played in months . She should raise her game to have a chance against Kim Clijsters

Match #4:

Kim Clijsters vs. Martina Muller

http://img111.imagevenue.com/loc59/th_e33_100_0695.JPG (http://img111.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc59&image=e33_100_0695.JPG) http://img104.imagevenue.com/loc250/th_807_100_0701.JPG (http://img104.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc250&image=807_100_0701.JPG)

Kim really really impressed me today... i have never been that big of a Clijsters fan because i always thought that her game was just a typical baseliner, super consitent but can hit big shots every now and then, but seeing her live really made me appreciate her game

Kim is so.... fucking... fast... i knew she was, and i knew that she had great defense, but i am telling you... seeing it live is nothing like seeing it on a tv... everytime that she would do the splits, it was amazing and the crowd would "ooOoOo" ... there really isnt much to say about this match that you all cant figure out for yourself

Kim was very aggresive, martina had no weapons to hurt her... although muller did come up with a few good shots every now and then, it was no where near the level that is needed to beat kim right now... bravo kim, you made yourself a new fan today!

End Result:
Kim Clijsters def. Martina Muller, 6-1, 6-2

Well, easy to tell - she was making tons and tons of errors, she really could not keep the ball in play, didn't look focused at all. Bychkova moves well, and has a solid serve, but she really didn't have to do much to win this match.

Match #5:

Sania Mirza Vs. Mashona Washington

http://img106.imagevenue.com/loc40/th_7ed_100_0729.JPG (http://img106.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc40&image=7ed_100_0729.JPG) http://img20.imagevenue.com/loc79/th_3d4_100_0722.JPG (http://img20.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc79&image=3d4_100_0722.JPG)

This was that one match when you go to the open... the match where you stay for most of it, it turns out to be a battle, the crowd gets involved, line calls, long points, short points, big serves, slow serves, fatigue, easy misses, overhead let-downs... everything came into play in this three-set battle... i will break it down by player, and then i have a story to tell lol

Sania Mirza; her forehand is nothing short of amazing, to say the least, and her backhand is short and compact which provides and easy swing at paced balls flying at her as well as a more consistent shot that she can rely on... not to mention that she is one of the most photogenic and BEAUTIFUL people i have truly ever seen... BUT with the good comes the bad... she is ERRATIC (which i would assume to be understandable due to her "go big on every shot" kind of philosophy) but when i say erratic, i mean it... she missed two REALLY easy bouncing overheads 10 feet away from the baseline on important points (a la 30-30) and she needs to improve her fitness (not fitness like power cause she was hitting big the whole match, but like hitting on the run and truly being out there like an athlete)... her serve needs improvement, especially her second which drifted as low as 72 mph during the latter stages of the third set... one thing that really impressed me was her fight... she was out there competiting for every single point, lots of fist pumps and c'mons and i cant tell you how many times that she came back from 15-40 on her serve in the last set to hold... overall, she really REALLY impressed me and she is definately going places

Masona Washington: since i pretty much tired myself out describing the eventual winner of the match, i will make washingtons description a bit shorter.... she has a very good froehand and a nice first serve, but other than that, her game belongs outside the top 50... she was super erratic on break points and her body language was poor throughout the whole match... at one point, it was 15-40 on mirza's serve and sania served to mashona's backhand with big 100+ first serves while she was serving mostly to the forehand... this prompted mashona to say, and i quote, "HER FIRST SERVE WAS GOING TO THE FOREHAND THE WHOLE FUCKING MATCH!!!" ... on that note, to my story

There was a heavy black man there, and i believe it may have been mashona's father or brother or coach or something, but he was sitting pretty close to me and my group... obviously, he was cheering for her, but the things he was saying were so ridiculous... things like "CLOSE THE DOOR" when it was a game point or "COME ON MISS WASHINGTON" randomnly... when sania lost a LONG rally at 30-30 and 4-4 in the second, she slammed her racquet down hard, this prompted from the man a SCREAMING of "CODE VIOLATION, RACQUET ABUSE.... LETS GO REF WAKE UP" needless to say it was VERy annoying and was boderline rude and offensive how bad he was coaching mashona from the sidelines... so my group and a couple of old ladies started to cheer loudly for sania... every time he would say something, we would echo him with a shout of "LETS GO SANIA" and the like... the difference was that we were still clapping when mashona would hit great shots (to applaud tennis not just the players) and the man would clap during things like double faults for sania... well, we got the last laugh as right after match point i turned around to see what the man's reaction was, and he was GONE... he stormed out of the stadium as quickly as possibly... GO SANIA

End Result:
Sania Mirza def. Mashona Washington, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4

Match #6:

Shaui Peng vs. Emma Laine

Now, i am a huge, HUGE womens tennis fan... i pride myself in knowing just about everything about everyone on the WTA tour... but to my surprise, i had NEVER heard of emma laine... needless to say i was shocked when i walked over to court 15 and found that she had won the second set of her match with peng in a tiebreak, so i of course sat down and walked the final set

Let me tell you guys... emma REALLY impressed me... she is a lefty with a decent first serve, a great forehand and a very consitent backhand ... the big thing that impressed me was her defense, she reminded me of clijsters, sliding all over the court, getting a ridiculous amount of balls back at peng to which peng was forced to either really hit out and hit winners, or come up with the unfortunate error... needless to say, almost all of the points in the third went 8+ shots in a rally, really long, exhausting tennis... but the best part was that peng really didnt play bad, she was truly and utterly outplayed by laine!

Near the beginning of the third set, peng's game rose to the level that beat clijsters and she lead 2-0 easily, hitting swinging volleys and winners over and over... all of a sudden, laine started to find her groove... she likes to run around the backhand and hit big forehands (not that big, beacause this girl was really tiny, but big for her size) and again, her defense was impeccable

At 5-2, laine serving, she fell behind 0-40 ... peng looked to get back into the match... nevertheless, laine held her ground and hit at least one winner as well as getting every single ball back cause forced and unforced errors from peng ... she won five straight points to take the final set, and let out an adorable scream as peng's groundtroke went long on match point

ps, there was a little mid-40's woman there with a viking hat on that said finland... she was cheering for laine loudly and she was cute lol

End Result:
Emma Laine def. Shaui Peng, 3-6, 7-6, 6-2

Marion Bartoli Vs. Barbora Strycova

I cannot really say much about this match, because i only watch a few games of it... from what i saw, it was bartoli's match the whole time because she hit with power, placement, and consitency while strycova just went for big winners all the time and missed quite a lot... i was really not impressed by barbora, and i know she is touted as an up-and-comer, but i do not know why... her game was very average to be nice, and she is too erratic to make it anywhere much higher (in her carrer) than top 75

End Result:
Marion Bartoli def. Barbora Strycova, 6-3, 6-0

pcrtennis... i dunno if she has a chance against schiavone, because i do not know her game well enough to know if the same emma that played peng will come out against franny

but... needless to say, if the same emma does come out, fran better be on her guard, and an upset is a DEFINATE possibility

Match #8

Alicia Molik Vs. Shenay Perry

http://img41.imagevenue.com/loc139/th_67c_100_0771.JPG (http://img41.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc139&image=67c_100_0771.JPG) http://img16.imagevenue.com/loc136/th_4ee_100_0775.JPG (http://img16.imagevenue.com/img.php?loc=loc136&image=4ee_100_0775.JPG)

Again, i cant say much about the match because i only watched from 1-1 to the end of the first set because we were all pretty tired by the time that alicia started to play...

From what i saw, her serve was looking as fine as ever, HUGE first serves and very nice spinned second serves... but her court sense was not all there... she was coming into net at obscuere times and constantly getting wrongfooted by shenay, who had a large crowd support (shes american!)... but, molik, stranegely enough, was volleying pretty well even though she made herself come up with ridiculous crouching vlleys that could be avoided by coming to net at the right time... her ground game was definately off, and shenay did not have to do too much to win the first set but hold her serve, which she was doing pretty effectively... i liked perry's game, a nice one-handed backhand and a nice forehand with a solid serve and solid volleys, she was a very complete player

One thing that was annoying was the Aussie fans... 9 drunken idiots with their shirts off with the word "AUSTRALIA" written on their chect (one letter per guy) who did ridiculous things to try and get the crowd into the match... they were shouting stupid chants for molik, who didnt look too thrilled to have 9 drunken guys guzzling over her... and tried to get people to do the wave to no avail... they were cheering perry's mistakes and SCREAMING LONG chants in the middle of games for molik, she seemed a little distracted too because she looked restless on her serve games with them in her ear

Nonetheless, not a great shoing for alicia, but im confident she'll find her way back to winning form

End Result:
Shenay Perry def. Alicia Molik, 6-4, 6-4

This is surprising about Mirza's serve, because the pace of it impressed me in Cincinnati; she was consistently above 100 MPH on the first and 85-95 on the second that week. I know that she's battling an abdominal-muscle pull (which made her skip Toronto). Maybe that's a factor.

Her hitting on the run is definitely her biggest weakness. I was also surprised to read about the amount of fight she showed; in Cinci, I noted that I wanted to see a little more passion from her, as she only seemed to really show discouragement (no other real on-court emotion). I wonder if Farrington hasn't gotten her to be a little more expressive.

The inconsistency is something we'll have to live with for a while. That's the way she grew up playing. Now that she actually has some coaching, it'll be interesting to see if he reigns in some of her go-for-broke attitude, or if she continues the Gonzo approach. She has much more variety in her game than she usually demonstrates.

Nice work. :wavey:

albiero... her first serve was very good, but her second serve got weaker as the match went on, maybe a little fatigue maybe an ab strain, but it was definately noticeable

as for her fight... the loudest comeon she let out was at 4-4, 30-30 when mashona hit a doublefault, i know it isnt the best time for a loud comeon, but it showed she really wanted the win, and she broke and held for the match... she definately did show disgust too, though

I don't see how the man's race was pertinent to the story, but nice match summary :wavey:

his race is pretinent to the story to prove that he was related to mashona, and was coaching her throughout the match

regardless of his race of if they were related at all in any way, the guy as annoying and what he was doing was just wrong and really rude

No, Mashona's dad is black... Okay, that made no sense. Anyway, I think you are reading far too much into his assumption that this was a relative of Mashona's.

as i said, i have no concrete proof that the guy was a washington, but he had little pet names for her like miss washington, and as i said before, regardless of his race, the guy was very rude, so i think that VeeReeDavJCap81 needs to chill out a little bit with her off-beat accusations of racism, because s/he was not at the match, and s/he did not see or hear what i did

When did I accuse you of being racist  All I said, was that the race of the man was not important to the story. And I'm a guy, so your third person reference is the only offbeat thing here.

Well, your were getting annoyed with him mentioning it was a "black guy" for some reason?

I wasn't getting annoyed, I just thought it wasn't necessary to suggest because someone in the stands was black (NYC has TONS of black people) that they were related to Mashona. I mean, it sounded stupid so I called him/her out on it. I wasn't annoyed one bit, if you've read my threads on this board, you know I can be a lot more hostile and downright rude.

I heard the drunken idiots were cheering on Pratty when Akiko was injured. Just letting people know not all Aussies are like that

His blackness proves nothing. Were all the black men in the crowd related to Mashona? :fiery:

Great reports photos, and vids, but do you really think all black people are related? If you believe in creationism then are we not all related?
