against Zuluaga....and left the court without even acknowledging her opponent. I'll excuse her only by saying all the tears she was crying being down 0-6 0-3 got the better of her.
Otherwise thats in poor taste Mrs Bogomolov Jr

I don't think Ashely was injured, she looked very despondent and embarrassed by being so thrashed. She was barely trying, quite poor sportsmanship from her.

That's very very disappointing. This was her chance....

Well, hopefully some of the American juniors will rise to the occasion.

If that was the case, how pathetic

i don't think anyone is that pathetic to just quit cuz she's not winning a game. she must've been injured or something.

She was never that good to begin with. Just another IMG blonde science project that didn't make it off the ground.

Ashley? What happened? I though you have a very good chance against Fabiola because you were playing well in the last few weeks, Fabiola didn't...OMG

Helen loves the blonde and the beautiful! Hmm, if she were an actress, she's better than Pam Anderson and Anna Nicole, easily, but I'm not sure I even put her with Lana Turner.

More to the story than being told here....

apparently her Mom is critically ill (the commentators made it sound like she is dying?!?) so I think it is understandable that she left the court upset and out of it....

Shes had a great summer on the challenger circuit. obviously theres more to the story

Aug 29th, 2005, 10:19 PM
Well she may have been injured physically, but from what I saw she also gave up mentally. But she should not have been so injured that she couldnt have gone over to her opponent and said she was retiring. She shook the ump's hand after the physio saw her, then just went straight off.....nothing to Zuluaga. Thats more of spoilt brat nature than that of an injured tennis player

Know the whole story before judging .

Yeah some people here are so judgmental  How do some of you know what was going on inside her head ?

I thought her mom was better after the skin cancer?

I know Ashley's had problems with depression, perhaps it's an episode?

Whatever the case, hope she gets better.

poor Ashley, get better soon.

But should it matter what is really going on in her head. She had the presence of mind to go to the ump...it just seems a bit strange that she didnt have it to acknowledge Zuluaga who was right there as well.

I have to assume that Ashley's mom told her to go out there and play.

Despite what happened on court today I can only echo that Ashley was coming into the Open with some degree of confidence. She was 16-2 in challenger events winning two titles.

And the fact Zuluaga herself hasn't done anything on court to write home about, it really was Ashley's chance to get back on track in the big leagues.

Hopefully this setback won't damage the hard work Ashley has been putting on court as of late.

Arghhh...thatīs definetly sad. Itīs bad for everyone who has to suffer directly or indirectly from it but Ashley just made a "comeback" and now that...hope her mum will be ok

Have you ever had a close relative who is seriously ill ? I mean its her mom who is ill here.....

I watched the match. She was out of it. Something was surely going on mentally (if not also physically).

As for the not acknowledging Zuluaga: Again, I think something was going on mentally. Didn't seem to be intentional.

She did, primarily because of her mother's illness.

She was just saying that everyone should watch out because she's going to be bringing it at the US Open...and this? Strange...

This is really sad. Tennis is really sad, all these losdt hopes and dreams and potentials. How many stopries we have all seen with different outcomes....Kournikova, Lucic, Harkleroad, Seles, Capriati, Sabatini....I swear ...dramas plus in the tennis world

...Coach Heath Waters, Lindsay Lee-Waters husband?

The actual information in this article about her retirement from the match is highly ambiguous. Sounds like she was paralysed by nerves as much as anything.

Extremely ambiguous. A respiratory problem is mentioned but she mouthed "I'm so nervous" to her coach/family; her coach said she was "tight as a drum" and she walked off the court after only a "cursory" examination. Sounds very much like she was very nervous and wanted off as soon as possible for whatever reason but it's a sad way to go out after doing well leading up to the event in Challengers. I know Ashley suffered from depression at some point but a sad end to her Open whatever the explanation.
