There was a very good thread posted yesterday. Done in great detail. Scroll back a couple of pages and it'll be there. I can't remember who started it now :(

All the four could end up # 1 though it would be very difficult for Kim i think. She could get to # 1 in the race though :)

only Lindsay, Amelie and Maria can be # 1 after US Open.

from Bob Larson's website

We note that, because Maria Sharapova has less to defend than Lindsay Davenport, she is again on top in this regard, though by a relatively small total of just over 200 points -- a margin small enough that she is by no means assured of regaining the #1 spot. With these numbers as they are, either Sharapova or Davenport could easily be #1, and Mauresmo has an outside shot. Theoretically, even Clijsters has a chance -- but it won't happen. (She can regain the lead in the Race, though.)

Maria might but I think Lindsay will be in the semis atleast so it unlikely anyone else will take over.

Just Me:
Well, Bob Larson is good but occasionally he makes mistakes and this is one of those times. Kim has no chance, even a theoretical one, as I show in http://wtaworld.com/showthread.php?t=188290

Kim wouldn't have a theoretical chance even if someone had handpicked the draw (within the rules, of course) to maximize Kim's quality points. It was possible had Lindsay got to #1 with a final at New Haven but after she went on to win the title and add more points to her rating it became impossible.
