NEW YORK (AP) -- Svetlana Kuznetsova was shopping for shirts the other day when several people stopped her, asking if she was the defending U.S. Open champion.

So what if most didn't know her last name. At least they recognized her.

Kuznetsova has been largely overlooked in the buildup to the U.S. Open, with all the attention centered on Lindsay Davenport, Maria Sharapova and Kim Clijsters. Her first-round match, against fellow Russian Ekaterina Bychkova on Monday morning, isn't even one of those featured on center court.

''There's lots of good players to play on the center court here,'' Kuznetsova said Sunday, shrugging. ''I am playing. I think I will play there also (sometime). So I don't mind.''

Kuznetsova may not be as glamorous as some of the other Russians, but her star power hasn't been helped by her recent play. Though she's ranked fifth in the world, she's 27-14 in 20 tournaments this year, and is still looking for her first title.

She did make the quarterfinals at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and lost to Justine Henin-Hardenne in the finals in Warsaw, Poland. But she hasn't gotten past the third round since Wimbledon, and was bothered by a back injury in her loss in Toronto two weeks ago.

''I think I've been going pretty fast ... these few years,'' she said. ''This year I was not improving so much because I am already in the top 10 and it's much harder to stay there and to go higher.

''Last year was a big breakthrough, and this year I couldn't make it so good also,'' she added. ''So I am expecting it still to be better.''

With her back healthy again, there's no better place for her to make a run than the U.S. Open.

Kuznetsova overwhelmed Elena Dementieva in straight sets for her first Grand Slam title. She was the third Russian in a row to win a Grand Slam, joining Anastasia Myskina (French) and Sharapova (Wimbledon).

''I was not that satisfied, not that happy with (this) year,'' Kuznetsova said. ''Coming here, it just changes everything. I just forget all the tournaments that have been before, I forget all what's behind me and I just remember the memories and want to do good here. I want to play my best tennis and don't think what happened before it.''

poor Sveta, alot of media don't know she's defending champion. I heard two reports on the weekend, one saying Davenport defending us open champion and last night on eurosport news they had a report on Venus Williams the Us Open defending Champion.

I felt sad reading that. I could imagine a violin playing as i read it, picturing svetlana walking alone etc. [The scary part s i'm NOT lying]. While WE know her, she has been largely ignored by the media. I've never heard or her getting a photoshoot or anything. She was the only russian slam winner not to get a call from the former president too. People hardly speak about last years USO win, in comparison with the other two.

She's one of the nicest girls too. I hope Svetlana's fortunes change. If Eleni or Sania are not able - i'd very much love Svetlana to knock out IT (girl). Maybe then she can get better media recognition.

I hope she has a great run, and gets to the semi's (losing only to Venus). If not gets to the finals.

I can't believe shes played 20 tournaments with no wins, Of the matches I saw her play in she seems like shes here to stay in the Top 10 and looks to be the most talented russian.

Yeah.I felt really sorry for Sveta too  .How is her win any less than those of the other russians?IMO it would be good for Sveta to lose this time so that the pressure of being a reigning GS champ will be off her.I think she wasn't ready for that pressure, and it affected her game.I think that we'll see better things from her next year. The pressure will be off her and she can go back to playing her natural game.

Sveta is the most talented of the russians IMO.She's got bags more talent than IT girl certainly.Maria is a very good player, but way over-hyped.I hope she gets knocked out early to shut all the press hounds up  .You can do it Eleni :bounce: !If not,go hard at her Sania(if she gets that far)!

I agree. Well said. Svetlana is nice girl, she didn't deserve to be treated like that. IMO, it was similar with Venus at Wimbledon - at look how it ended! Hope that Svetlana can also show them how wrong they were when they underestimated her :fiery:

They ignored her last year and look what happened.

At the club where she trains in Spain, her colleagues compiled a video tribute of her Open triumph for a New Year's party. Kuznetsova was thrilled but embarrassed.

"I'm showing it to people who want me to show it to them," she said. "I watch it a couple of times, and I am getting sick of it."

Kuznetsova will not be able to duck the attention in New York, as much as she would like to stay incognito.

"I just want to stay a little bit longer like this; now I have to go there and defend it," she said. "I know it's going to be hard, even harder than last year. But I did it once. I have nothing to lose. I'm just going to keep playing and see how far it goes."

I can't understand the level of hate and hostility toward this girl on this board. I think all the anti-Maria sentiment is understandable (if not very transparent), but Svetlana is not arguably over-hyped, does not makes arguably disproportionate endorsement money and the like and she's far from blonde and beautiful. While Dementieva is far, far more attractive, I can't understand the level against her, either. Fine, they've both had shit years and might soon be out of the top 10. I mean, Carthage has been leveld, why do you have to spread salt on the soil as well?

Good for her, I wish her well. When she's on it's great to watch her.

I was very disappointed in the US Open's treatment of her. At the start of the broadcast they showed several past champions, and like most slams that montage is supposed to end with the current mens and womens champion. They did not show her once! Shameful.

Agreed that the negativity aimed at Svetlana is unwarranted. However, there will always be people to readily criticises others, just have to realise what bs they are talking.

Hope she can get tickets to the Sharapova match tonight because that's the only way she'll see Ashe stadium where singles is concerned.

There's still doubles. Maybe she'll do better there.

I'm not at all surprised by the result because Sveta has not played all that well this year and she's suffering from a back injury. This girl has to be really on to play well. She's a UE disaster when she's off, but when she's on she hits some beautiful shots.

I heard a comment about her saying there was too much pressure on her becasue every time she played a match she was being announced as the USO Champ. Duh, Sveta! You were the defending champ, in fact you still are. Just not defending anymore. But what did she expect that she could crawl back into her shell and continue to produce terrible results and no-one would notice?

This is what being a Slam champ is about and being a top 10 player. The one thing is that no-one can take that victory away from her, so she can console herself with that but to expect anything less than utter pressure being reigning champ in an event of this magnitude is pure naivete.

Maybe she can present the trophy to the winner and thereby live up to her promise to make it to center court.

hey,can we please stop these unneeded and deeply hurting episodes of "how can she get to the center-court?? :o :o dont you think, its hard enough for the girl right now??really,i ask myself more and more, how many percent are REAL tennis fans here, and not only "dumb bashers"!! :o

it makes me even more angry, because sveta is one who is never arrogant or disrespecting to other players, she keeps a lot to herself!and if someone like her is treated this way,i cant let that stand unanswered!

so finally, some of you should really remember if its right, what they do!! :o :o
