Venus, Serena and Richard Williams Named In Lawsuit For Breach Of Contract; Palm Beach Company Fights To Save Battle of The Sexes II

PALM BEACH, Fla. -April 19, 2002--Tennis champions Venus and Serena Williams are used to battling it out on the tennis courts, but now the sisters face a new battle in a Palm Beach County court room.

The Williams sisters, along with their father Richard Williams and his company Richard Williams Tennis & Associates, Inc. (RWTA), are being sued for breach of contract and other claims by CCKR, LLC, acting on behalf of Womens Sport Zone Inc., (WSPZ), an online venture dedicated to promoting women's sports. The suit claims that Venus and Serena Williams backed out of an agreement to play in a tennis match where they would have potentially faced John
and Patrick McEnroe.

According to the lawsuit filed by attorneys Abbey L. Kaplan and Todd A. Levine with Kluger, Peretz, Kaplan & Berlin, PA, potential profits from the match, dubbed "Battle of the Sexes II" after the infamous 1973 match that pitted Billie Jean King against Bobby Riggs, have been estimated to exceed $45 million.

Six counts were included in the complaint filed today in the Circuit Court of the 15th Judicial Circuit in Palm Beach County. They are: (1) Breach of Contract (2) Specific Performance (3) Fraud in the Inducement (4) Negligent Misrepresentation (5) Breach of Fiduciary Duty and (6) Breach of Warranty of Implied Authority.

"Either the Williams family has failed to meet their contractual obligations to participate in the Battle of the Sexes event or Richard Williams has fraudulently misrepresented himself as an agent of the sisters with the power to initiate binding contracts," said Kaplan, a founding partner and head of the Litigation Department at Kluger, Peretz, Kaplan, & Berlin. "Although my client has suffered substantial damages as a result of the Williamses'
breach of contract, we would still prefer to settle matters on the tennis court rather than in a court room."

This sounds made up to me. Where did it come from? Although, I will admit Richard may have done something like this, I have always thought the girls are too sensible to get involved in something like this.
