NEW YORK (AP) - Ashley Harkleroad, who has won two titles on the Challenger tour this year, beat Yulia Beygelzimer 6-2, 7-6 (3) on Thursday to advance to the quarterfinals of the GHI Bronx Tennis Classic.

"My game has improved steadily this year,'' said the 20-year-old Harkleroad, who married ATP Tour player Alex Bogomolov last December. "I won three matches to qualify for Wimbledon but lost to Jill Craybas in the opening round. After a three-month layoff I returned and won in Louisville and Washington, D.C. and was the runner-up in College Park. My ranking went from 215 to 140 and I have already received a wild card for the U.S. Open''.

If it was a beauty contest Ashley wouldn't bother turning up until the semi-finals. It ain't though but I hope her good form continues all the same. She's got at least another decade of tennis to play (if she's smart). Živeli.

Saw her play today at the Bronx Classics. She let the 1st set slip away and got bagelled in the 2nd by Camille Pin. Then after letting out some expletives at 4/0 in 2nd set, she recieved a code violation. Her game has improved, though. Camille was just on fire. She plays Bammer in finals tomorrow.

Pin's the type of player that will bother Ashley because she doesn't give her any pace to work with.

Good luck at the U.S. Open, and do the best with your WC, she'll be in the top 100 very soon, because she has no points to defend until April of next year

Yeah I was wondering the same thing

I wonder what her serve looks like when it's "on fire" :p

Thanks for the report. Could you elaborate what kind of "expletives" AH was uttering? Was she cursing her opponent, umpire or herself? Wonder if she has lately become more temperamental.

Wonder if she has lately become more temperamental. You're welcome. The expletives were at the lines person and the chair ump. Use your imagination. She held nothing back. She was pissed after losing 1st set and being 4/0 down in 2nd. Camille was blasting winners all over the court and every time Ashley had adv to win a game, Camille took it back to deuce. There were about 8 deuces in one game and about 6 in another. btw Pin played some uncharacteristically great tennis, which seemed to frustrate Ashley. Can't wait to see Bammer, who's playing really well, vs Pin tomorrow. Anne Kremer had a serious attitude when she lost . .kicking her chair and screaming at herself.:eek:I guess they all take these challengers more seriously than we think. Tian Tian sun and Ting Li were just too cute signing autographs after their doubles match.

Yeah, the players definitely take these challengers seriously, all the players at this level seem to flip out at some point during the match either at themselves or someone else. Poutchek was the biggest character I've seen this summer.

Thanks. It's not a good sign that Ashley was unable to hold off Camille Pin's attack, because (as far as I have seen) Camille has no weapon whatsoever. Hope Ashley won't get a tough draw or it could be 1st round exit at USO :(
